Sexual Reproduction in Animals
In sexual reproduction, two parent organisms are involved: the male
and the female. When the egg cell unites with the sperm cell, the
process is called fertilization. The new cell that is formed is called a
zygote.
In some animals, both testes and ovaries are present. Such organisms
are called hermaphrodites.
Fertilization and Zygote Development
For fertilization to occur, a fluid medium must be present so that
the sperm can swim to the egg. The male and female gametes must
be released together because sperm and eggs live only for a short
period of time.

There are two basic ways in which the gametes are brought together:
external fertilization and internal fertilization.
1. External fertilization
In external fertilization, the eggs are fertilized
in the environment outside the body of the
female. External fertilization occurs in most
aquatic invertebrates:
In some fishes, the female deposits thousands of
eggs, and the male swims over them to release
sperm. This process is called spawning.
In frogs when a female is full of eggs and ready
to mate, she approaches a male. The male
embraces the female with his front legs in a
process called amplexus.

1. Internal fertilization
In internal fertilization, fertilization occurs within the body of the
female. It is one characteristics of animals that live on land. It can also
occur in some aquatic animals.
In fertilization is internal in higher forms of animals that live on land
like the horse, cat, lion, and dog. The embryo develops inside the
mother’s body.
In other animals like hens, the embryo is formed inside a protective
eggshell that is laid by the mother, and when it is fully developed. It is
hatched from the eggshell, looking like its parents.
