1. Introduction
Stress is a natural response to challenges.
While a certain level of stress can motivate
one to thrive, it can hinder
one’s performance too.

Effectively managing one’s
emotions, thoughts and
behaviour is known as self-
management or self-control.
Self-management helps us to perform better
at the prioritized tasks and bring utmost
output.
2. What is stress?
Stress is body’s reaction to any change that
requires an adjustment or response. It can
manifest physically, emotionally, or mentally

Academic pressure
Peer pressure and confidence
Failed time management
High expectations
Overuse of social media
4. Effects of stress
Physical effects:
headaches, fatigue, sleep
disturbance, etc.
Emotional effects: anxiety, irritability,
depression, etc.
Behavioural Effects: withdrawal from
activities, change in appetite, etc
Cognitive effects: memory problems,
indecisiveness, worrying, negative
thinking, etc
Hormonal effects: imbalance in cortisol
levels, disruption of various hormones,
etc
Social effects: strained relationships,
increased conflicts, isolation, etc
5. Ways to manage stress
Physical strategies- regular exercises,
7-8 hours of undisturbed sleep, having
a balanced diet, reducing consumption
of caffeine/sugar/alcohol/drugs, etc
Relaxation techniques- practice:
meditation. Deep breathings, muscle
relaxations, warm baths, etc
Task management- set realistic goals,
follow a to-do list, avoid
procrastination, etc
Cognitive and emotion coping-
challenge negative thoughts, start
journaling, seek laughter and humour,
etc
Social support- talk to a trusted
family/friend, engage in group
activities, see a therapist, attend
stress management workshops, etc.

labelling emotions accurately
Harnessing emotions: using awareness
for high productivity
Understanding, managing, and
harnessing emotions.

Understanding stress and implementing
effective management techniques are crucial
in maintaining mental and physical health,
leading to improved overall performance and
well-being. Being aware that you’re stressed,
identifying the cause of it and taking proper
measures to overcome it are the 3 basic
steps of stress-
management.
