timeline. (slide 3) Islam started in 610 CE, Christianity has events before.

2. What continent did Islam start on? What continents will it spread to in the Middle
Ages? (slide 4) It started in Saudi Arabia, and moved to Asia, Africa, and Spain
(Europe).

3. How is Islam similar to other religions we have learned about like Christianity and
Judaism? (slide 5) They believe in one god (monotheistic), and have a holy book.

4. Pick one of the 5 pillars of faith to write about. Why do you think that pillar is
important to Muslims (people who practice Islam)? (slide 6) Charity because its good
to help the poor that are less fortunate

5. Watch the video about the Kaaba, which pillar do you think it relates to in Islam and
why? (slide 7) The video is related to pilgrimage to Mecca.

6. As Islam spread, what spread with it? Why might this have been helpful to people
living in Islamic areas? (slide 8) The language Arabic also spread with it. This was
helpful to people living in Islamic areas because it increased trade across islamic
territories.

7. Is all Islam the same? What are the two branches? (slide 10) There are two
branches- Sunni and Shi’a Muslim

8. Which group that we had previously studied helped influence Muslim architecture and
buildings? (slide 11) The Roman influenced buildings with domes and columns

9. In Europe there was a decline in learning in technology, what about in Muslim


controlled areas? What are some advancements of Muslim scholars? (slide 12 and 13)
Made advancements in algebra, medicine, arabic numerals.

Islam similar to civilizations we have studied to this point? (You can compare them to
the Romans, Byzantines, Greeks, Persians, Mesopotamians, etc.) The Romans and
Byzantines also only believed in one god.

11. What are some differences you see between Islam and other civilizations we studied
to this point? What makes it a unique religion and civilization? They have 5 pillars of
faith, they have a different prophet, Ramadan and fasting
