Using BIM Software Guidelines

The document provides guidelines for using BIM software, specifically Revit, emphasizing efficient file management, regular synchronization, and proper handling of CAD files. It outlines best practices for model organization, including naming conventions, worksets, and minimizing unnecessary elements to enhance performance. Additionally, it advises against certain actions like editing key model components and using model-in-place families to maintain model integrity and efficiency.

Using BIM software guidelines

1. Open the Revit file with only the specific worksets you need; do not open all worksets, as this will take a
lot of time to load.

2. Regularly append a new local file from the central model while updates occur on the central model.
3. Ensure to sync the local file frequently (Max. 2 hrs); do not leave it open overnight.
Optional: For more security, save first, Reload the latest then Sync.
4. Avoid trying to cancel during the synchronization process.

5. Always synchronize on the starting view while all windows are closed.

6. Coordination Review Warnings

Make sure to check the coordination review warnings prior to working on the model. An action must be taken
(Approve, Reject, accept difference, Delete, ….)

7. Warnings

Review and solve warnings regularly.

8. Project Base Point & Survey Point

Do not make any edit\modification for the above-mentioned coordinate points. For any modification
required please refer to BIM team

9. Do not work on the Navisworks view (inside the Revit Project Browser) or make changes to the
Navisworks view template or delete it.

10. Import CAD files

Make sure to avoid importing CAD files; instead, use linked CAD files.

11. Preparing imported CAD (if necessary):

A. Before importing the CAD file, please make sure to do the following:
-Purge all unused items such as (blocks, layers, line styles, …..)
-Overkill overlays objects
-Remove unnecessary layers and xrefs
-No floating objects along the Z-axis
-No far lines or blocks
-optional: copy the drawing into a new CAD file(using: acadiso.dwt) or use “Wblock”

12. Prohibit exploding CAD files/Details inside the Revit model

Do not explode any CAD files/details inside the Revit file to avoid importing thousands of additional
unnecessary elements such as lines, and hatches.

13. purge unused model objects

Regularly purge unused views, families, empty sheets, images & groups.

14. Ensure that model elements are correctly associated with their correct levels.
15. Naming convention
Ensure that the naming conventions for families, views, worksets, and levels strictly adhere to the BEP.

Note: Views and worksets should not be named using personal names, even if they are still in progress.

16. Worksets
The modeled elements are located on their proper Worksets.
For unrequired elements or for trial components, please add them to a workset named “Dummy” to be
neglected from Check, Clash Report & Submission.

17. Groups
Minimize the use of groups as they impact the model size & performance. Make sure to “Ungroup” the
groups before submission.

For a small number of elements (ex: Table & Chairs) create as one family instead where possible.

18. Model-In-place families

Do not use Model-in-Place families as they are not recommended because they impact the model size &
performance.

19. Avoid creating unnecessary reference plans\levels and associating elements or views to them.

20. Minimize using 2D elements such as lines & regions as applicable.

21. Minimize the use of Reference plans or reference lines.

22. Check/Review all unplaced and unenclosed rooms/spaces.

23. Do not create instances (do not copy a link) of linked Revit models.

24. Do not move datum objects such as linked files, grids, levels, and matchlines.

25. Check & delete duplicated model elements.

26. Avoid using “Text” instead of tags and dimensions.

27. Do not make edits for the Titleblock family loaded inside your model. For any modifications required
please refer to BIM team to distribute to all departments.

28. Ensure that main Scope boxes are not duplicated, deleted or re-named. For any temporary scope boxes
or specific boxes for some areas please add it to the “Dummy” workset.

29. Do not hide elements in views (Keyboard Shortcut: EH); instead, please use hide elements with
visibility graphics or apply filters.

30. Minimize the use of parts and assemblies.

31. For any requirements to get elements from the old backup version, please refer to BIM team.
