DESCRIPTION
The Isuzu 87-99 Systems Application is used with the TECH 1, TECH 1 Series A (TECH 1A), or Mastertech
to diagnose and troubleshoot problems in the following systems:
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Transmission Control Module (TCM)
Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
Supplemental Inflatable Restraint System (SRS)/(SIR)
Antilock Brake System (ABS)
Specific vehicles and models that can be tested for each system are listed in the tables in Chapter 3.
NOTE The 1993 4L80E transmission functions are found under the 1993 ECM/
SRS system selection. This is because the vehicle uses a combined Engine
and Transmission control module called a PCM. All other 90-95
transmission functions are found under the TRANS/ABS system selection.
MANUAL ORGANIZATION
This manual is divided into three main sections:
Chapter 2 through Identifying the vehicle being tested and selecting a system to test.
Chapter 4
Chapter 5 Operating instructions for testing the ECM/PCM, SIR/SRS, and Oasis systems.
Chapter 6 Operating instructions for testing the Transmission and ABS systems.
The headings in Chapter 5 and Chapter 6 identify the system(s) for which the test mode applies. Some test
modes for the various systems have the same name but the operating procedure for the test modes is
different (e.g., Snapshot for ECMs is different than Snapshot for Transmissions). Therefore, you should
verify that you are referring to the correct section of the manual before performing the test procedure.
NOTE
In this manual the TECH 1 and TECH 1A are both referred to as the TECH
1, or tester, except when the instructions are specific to one of the testers.
CAUTION!
Continuous activation of the AIR management system can cause
CAUTION overheating and damage to the catalytic converter.
To prevent this damage, the tester will automatically deactivate the AIR management system twenty seconds
after it has been activated by the operator in Test Mode F4. You must be careful not to continuously
reactivate the AIR solenoid after tester has automatically deactivated it; otherwise, damage to the catalytic
converter may occur.
ACTUATOR TEST
WARNING!
Always put the parking brake on and block the wheels when using this test
mode.
Care must be used when performing this test. If used incorrectly, this test can result in personal injury or
damage to the ECM, TCM, ABS, or vehicle.
Use this section to assist you in operating your Vetronix tester and application software. It covers everything
needed to get your tester connected to the vehicle and begin performing the diagnostic functions. It is
suggested that you read this manual completely before operating the tester and the application software.

3. When a system has been selected, the next step is to identify the vehicle being tested.
When a 1987-95 ECM/SRS is selected, you may identify the vehicle by using the VIN code or the fuel
delivery type selection method. How to do this is explained on the following pages.
When a 1987-95 Transmission/ABS, or any 1996-97 system is selected, the tester displays a vehicle
model. If the displayed vehicle type matches the vehicle being tested press y. If the display does not
match the vehicle being tested, press n until the display matches the vehicle being tested. Examples
of selecting the vehicle for the various systems are provided on the following pages.
In some cases a given VIN code applies to more than one engine or vehicle type. In this case, if the select
message does not correspond to the vehicle being tested, press n until the appropriate message is
displayed, then press y (see example, below). If none of the select messages correspond to the vehicle,
go back and recheck the VIN code (8th digit).

ACTIVE KEYS
The first three test modes are shown as soon as the system is selected. The other test modes automatically
scroll onto the display three at a time every three seconds. After all menu options have been displayed, the
scrolling process repeats.
To stop the automatic scrolling, press either the u or d key (d key only for Oasis vehicles). The menu
may then be manually changed by pressing either the u key to advance to the next display, or the d key to
return to the previous screen. All multiple menus of more than three items scroll in this way. REGARDLESS
OF WHICH TEST MODES ARE DISPLAYED, ANY TEST MODE CAN BE SELECTED AT ANY TIME
FROM THE MENU.
To select a test mode, simply press the tester key listed to the left of the test mode on the menu. Sample
menus are shown below. The menu items vary according to the vehicle and system selected.

POSSIBLE WRONG
WAITING FOR DATA SELECTION.
EXIT & RESELECT.
A B
Display A means that the tester cannot yet display data as it has not yet received a complete data message
from the ECM. This display is sometimes seen right after selecting a test mode. This is because the ECM to
tester communications begin right after the engine type is selected. If the TECH 1/1A or Mastertech has not
received a complete data message from the ECM by the time you've selected the test mode, it will tell you
that it is waiting for data until a complete message is received from the ECM.
Display B occurs when the tester determines that the data stream it receives from the ECM does not match
the engine type that you have selected. Most ECMs send out a different number of data words, and some
ECMs transmit as a different rate. After you select the engine type, the tester expects to see a certain number
of words transmitted at a certain rate. If the data word count or rate is different than expected, the tester will
display this message. If this happens, return to the engine type selection step by pressing x twice.
Refer to the VIN tables of section 4.0 to double-check your selection.
NOTE The Tech 1/1A or Mastertech cannot always tell if the wrong engine type
has been selected. A wrong engine type selection does not always result in
wrong ECM selected message.
Display C occurs when the tester has not received any data from the ECM. In this case, you should verify
that the ignition is ON and check the ALDL/DLC connections. An incorrect engine type selection may also
cause this condition.
NOTE Once the tester has received valid data and begins data display, message C
will not occur even if the tester is no longer receiving data. This allows you
to turn off the ignition and still retain the data display.
NOTE For carbureted vehicles, the circuitry of the vehicle “check engine” light is
used to electrically transmit the ECM information. The “check engine”
light will flicker rapidly on those vehicles when the ECM is
communicating with the tester.
ACTIVE KEYS
u&d Stop automatic menu scrolling, then used to manually control the menu display.
ECM/PCM/SRS/SIR SYSTEMS
The purpose of the DATA LIST mode is to continuously monitor engine data parameters. ECM operation
can be commanded in either the “diagnostics” mode (also called the 10K mode) or the “road test” mode
(also called the open mode) for certain vehicles.
In order to maximize the information that can be seen at one time the tester displays data parameters in pairs.
There are up to two dozen preprogrammed pairs for each engine type. A typical pair of data parameters is
shown in figure A in the following diagram.
To see the other preprogrammed data pairs available for the engine type you've selected, press either the
y or n key. The y key will cause the tester to scroll forward through the list of preprogrammed
pairs. The n key will cause backward scrolling. Holding either key will cause continuous scrolling.
If monitoring data parameters in Road Test mode is selected, the letters “RT” are displayed on line 2 of the
display as shown in figure B in the following diagram. The letters indicate “Road Test” mode operation. If
the tester automatically selects the Road Test mode (see Step 2a, 1987-97 ECM/SRS/SIR SYSTEMS: on
page 35), the letters “RT” will NOT appear on line two (figure A).
Selecting Road Test mode operation for engine types which do not transmit data in this mode causes a tester
display as in figure C.

Some parameters are displayed as preprogrammed pairs, as shown in example A in the preceding diagram.
You can create data parameter pairs different from the preprogrammed pairs, as explained below.
NOTE Some parameters for Class 2 vehicles are displayed in a single parameter
format with a full screen parameter description and cannot be made into
pairs.
New data pairs are created simply by scrolling either the bottom or top parameter, while the other parameter
is fixed. Pressing ) causes the top display parameter to be “fixed”, which is indicated with an asterisk (*)
in the left column of the second line of the display, as shown in figure A in the preceding diagram. Pressing
! causes the bottom display parameter to be fixed, as shown in figure B below. To “unfix” the top
parameter, press !. Press ) to “unfix” the lower parameter. The top and bottom parameters cannot be
both fixed at the same time.
As an example, let's say you wish to create a pair with ENGINE SPEED and OXYGEN SENSOR. To do so,
scroll through the preprogrammed pairs with the y or n key until you find a pair with ENGINE
SPEED. Fix ENGINE SPEED by pressing ) if ENGINE SPEED is the top parameter, ! if it is the
bottom. Then scroll the other half of the display with either the y or n key until OXYGEN
SENSOR is displayed.

NOTE For 1996-97 Class 2 vehicles, scrolling through the data parameters after
one parameter has been fixed will cause the tester to skip parameters that
are displayed in the full screen format.
1993 5.7L TBI Truck: You may select Engine, Transmission or Both data. When “Both” is selected,
some values may vary slightly between the engine and transmission due to the data being read from two
separate messages in the data stream.
When you have selected F0: ENGINE or F1: TRANSMISSION, the & key may be pressed to toggle
display of engine or transmission parameters. There will be a slight delay and a blank screen as the tester
initiates communication with the other control module.
2b. 1996-97 PCM SYSTEMS
For 1996-97 PCMs, a menu is displayed which allows you to display general engine data parameters or
display only the data parameters for specific engine systems. If F4: Specific Eng. is selected, a menu of
specific engine systems is displayed.
Once in the Data List mode, the following options are available: Press @ to go to the Select Status
menu, press # to display the name of the current data list, press & to go to the next Data List in the
selected menu.
For 1996-97 Class 2 vehicles, some parameters are displayed with an enhanced full screen description.

80 to over 250 data samples. When the memory is full, the oldest (earliest) data collected is erased to make
room for new information.
A “TRIGGER” tells the tester when to stop collecting data. You can specify a “TRIGGER CONDITION” so
the tester collects data that will be most useful in diagnosing the current problem. You can also select a
“TRIGGER POINT.”
Trigger Point
If F9:TRIG. POINT is selected from the SNAPSHOT MODE menu, a trigger point selection menu is
displayed. Trigger Point allows you to specify which data to capture—data that occurs before, after, or both
before and after the point at which the trigger occurs. If no trigger point is selected, the center trigger point
will be used and a similar number of data samples before and after the trigger will be saved. Trigger point is
fully explained in Step 5.
Trigger Condition
The trigger condition defines the specific circumstances under which you want the trigger to occur. The
possible trigger conditions are:
• ANY CODE: If any new trouble code is detected by the ECM, it will cause the trigger to occur.
• SINGLE CODE: You can select a specific trouble code that will cause the trigger to occur. Step 4 in the
Operating Procedure tells you how to enter the code.
• MANUAL TRIGGER: While operating the SNAPSHOT mode, you can always cause the trigger to
occur by pressing the (, e or x keys.
Once the trigger occurs, the tester will retain data according to which trigger point you have selected.
If F4: FAST DATA is selected from the Snapshot Mode menu, the tester will request data at a faster rate
(approximately every 125 ms, or 8 times a second) than the normal request rate. This will cause the Snapshot
buffer to fill with data sooner, but will give improved resolution to catch quick events. This feature is not
available for low-speed ECMs.
The operation of SNAPSHOT mode is divided into three phases: Set-Up (Steps 1-5), Data Capture (Steps 6-
9), and Data Display (Steps 10-14).
Setup Phase
1. Select the SNAPSHOT mode from the test mode menu by pressing #.
2. Note: Step 2 is only present for certain vehicles.
Some vehicles will require that you select ECM operation in either diagnostics (10K) or road test (open)
mode during SNAPSHOT test, by pressing ) or ! respectively.
For the 1987-88 1.5L Turbo you must select either fast data or slow data at this point. (See F0:Data List
description.)
If the 1993 5.7L TBI Truck is selected, you will be asked to select Engine, Transmission, or Both data to
perform a snapshot on.
3. The trigger conditions and Replay Data options are displayed in a self-scrolling SNAPSHOT MODE
menu. To select a trigger option, just press the Function Key displayed to the left of the desired trigger
condition. To replay previously captured data, press #.
4. You can choose a specific trouble code/DTC for the trigger condition as explained below.
When the tester screen displays “SNAPSHOT MODE, ENTER ECM CODE:, xx” or “ENTER DTC:
Pxxxx”, use numeric keys 0 - 9 to enter the trouble code/DTC number that you have selected, then
press the e key. The tester will continue to store data until the specified trouble code is detected,
or until you press the x key. If the code/DTC you enter does not exist for the engine type being
tested, an “INVALID CODE” message will be displayed and the code will have to be reentered.
5. In addition to offering a trigger condition selection, you have the option of selecting a trigger point. If
you select F9:TRIG. POINT from the SNAPSHOT MODE menu, the following options will be
displayed: F0: BEGINNING, F1: CENTER, and F2: END.
F0: Beginning The trigger will be at the beginning of the captured data. After the trigger occurs, the
tester will continue to capture data until the memory is full, then the data will be
displayed. If not enough data samples have been collected to fill the tester memory
(because the x key was pressed before the tester memory was full), some data
samples that were captured before the trigger point will also be available for display.
F1: Center If enough time has elapsed before and after the trigger point, a similar number of data
samples that occurred before and after the trigger point will be available for display.
However, if the trigger occurs at or near the start of the Data Capture phase, there will
be fewer samples before the trigger point available for display. Also, if the x key
is pressed after the trigger occurs, but before the tester memory is full, fewer data
samples captured after the trigger point will be available for display.
F2: End Data that occurred before the trigger will be displayed. If the tester memory was not
full when the trigger occurred, some data samples captured after the trigger point will
also be available for display.
After the Data Capture phase, you can scroll through all of the stored data for display. In the Data Display
phase (Steps 10-14), data parameters are displayed in a manner identical to that of the Data List mode. You
can also specify the data sample you wish to display (Steps 10 and 11).

6. Once the trigger condition is specified, the tester begins storing engine data parameters and trouble
codes while displaying the Data List parameters.
7. The data is organized as a number of data “samples.” The value or state of each parameter as well as all
trouble codes are saved for each sample. The data display will indicate the “waiting for trigger”
condition with a flashing “W” in the lower right-hand corner of the display. While waiting for the
selected trigger, the (, x, or e key can always be used to force a trigger.
8. Once the trigger occurs, the tester will continue to save data samples until its memory is full. The data
display indicates that the trigger has occurred by replacing the flashing “W” with a fixed “T.” As soon as
the memory is full, the data capture terminates automatically and the tester goes to the Data Display

The Output Tests submode allows you to control a number of individual ECM/PCM outputs. With this mode
you can exercise many of the ECM systems. The specific outputs that you can control depend on the vehicle
selected.
The outputs that are available to control appear in an Output Tests menu unique to the vehicle selected.
Some of the output control options are further broken down into submenus allowing you to control one
output from a group of similar outputs.
With the tester, you can turn an output ON or OFF. For most of the outputs, the tester will automatically
return the output to ECM/PCM control after five seconds to avoid damage to an actuator or the engine.
There are certain constraints to controlling some of the outputs. Some are determined by the ECM/PCM, and
some are determined by the tester. These constraints are described in the following pages.
While controlling the parameters, the Data List parameters are available for most vehicles.
For most vehicles, the engine must be running before the ECM/PCM will allow an output to be controlled by
the tester. See the following pages for exceptions to this rule.
3. After a three second prompt message, a menu of the available outputs will appear. This menu will
automatically scroll every three seconds. To turn off the automatic scrolling and manually control the
menu display, use the u and d keys.
4. To select an output to control, press the function key displayed to the left of the desired output. It is not
necessary that the menu item be currently displayed for you to select it; any menu item can be selected
while the menu is scrolling. Once an output is selected, you can then begin controlling the state of that
output.
For the 1993 1.6L MFI SOHC JS Stylus, the Shift Light cannot be controlled until the ECM has first
commanded it on.
5. 5. A controlled output can be in one of three states:
• When the output is first selected, it is under NORMAL ECM/PCM control; the output will be
determined by the ECM/PCM only.
• To override control of the ECM/PCM and force the output ON, press the u key.
• To override control of the ECM/PCM and force the output OFF, press the d key.
Note that the state of the output (ON or OFF) will not change as the override is commanded if the
override state is the same as the ECM/PCM controlled state. For example, if the Check Engine Light is
ON, and it is then commanded ON with the u key, its state will not change; it will stay ON.
6. The tester will allow output override control (ON or OFF) for only five seconds (for most outputs)
before it returns control of the output to the ECM/PCM. This safety feature is to prevent damage to the
controlled output.
7. For some selected vehicles, the Data List parameters are not displayed while the outputs are being
controlled. For vehicles that do display parameters in this mode, a three character window is displayed at
the end of line 2. These three characters serve as a reminder of which output is being controlled.
NOTE
The three character window at the end of line 2 is not displayed for Class 2
vehicles.
The last three characters of line 4 of the display will read “ON” or “OFF” if the state is being overridden
by the tester. It will be blank when the output is under normal ECM/PCM control.
For vehicles that do not display Data List parameters while in the Output Tests mode, the controlled
output is displayed along with a one line output state descriptor.

The purpose of the AIR SOLENOID submode is to control the state of the Air Switch solenoid while
continuously monitoring engine data parameters. The solenoid causes air to be directed to the vehicle
exhaust ports and can be used to test the effect on engine data parameters like oxygen sensor voltage.
Submode F0: AIR SOLENOID Control is not available for High Speed ECMs.
The tester AIR SOLENOID submode allows monitoring of engine data parameters in a manner identical to
that of the DATA LIST mode. See the VIEWING ECM DATA PARAMETERS portion of the DATA LIST

The purpose of the BACKUP FUEL submode is to command the ECM BACKUP FUEL and SPARK mode
of operation (also called the “3.9K mode” or Throttle Body Backup).
The ECM enters the BACKUP FUEL and SPARK mode of operation under two conditions: when the tester
commands the mode or when the ECM fails. The BACKUP FUEL and SPARK mode sets base timing and
supplies fuel injector pulses so the vehicle may be driven in for service if the ECM is dead or system voltage
is very high or very low.
For 1990-93 1.6L PFI vehicles, only BACKUP SPARK may be commanded. For this vehicle the menu item
will read F1: BACKUP SPARK.
The tester will automatically turn off the BACKUP FUEL mode after 20 seconds.

• MANUAL TRIGGER: While operating the SNAPSHOT mode, you can always cause the trigger to
occur by pressing the (, E, or x keys.
Once the trigger occurs, the tester will retain data according to which trigger point you have selected.
Trigger Point
If F9:TRIG. POINT is selected from the Snapshot Mode menu, a trigger point selection menu is displayed.
Trigger Point allows you to specify which data to capture data that occurs before, after, or both before and
after the point at which the trigger occurs. If no trigger point is selected, the center trigger point will be used
and a similar number of data samples before and after the trigger will be saved. Trigger point is fully
explained in Step 3.
Replay Data
You have the option of bypassing the Data Capture phase and displaying previously captured data. To do
this, select F3:REPLAY DATA from the Snapshot Options menu. All data captured during Snapshot is
retained in the tester memory for at least 24 hours, or until it is overwritten by a new Snapshot.
If no data has been captured, or if data stored in the tester memory is not data from the vehicle currently
being tested (i.e. it's from a previously tested vehicle), the tester displays the following message for four
seconds (or until the U or X key is pressed):
CAPTURED DATA

NOTE
During Snapshot replay, the trouble codes present for each sample can be
displayed by pressing @. Pressing # displays the cause of the trigger.
You can print the captured data, providing a hard copy of any selected data sample. Refer to the RS232C I/
F, TECH 1, TECH 1 Series A, or Mastertech Operator's Manual for printing instructions.
The operation of Snapshot mode is divided into three phases: Set-Up (Steps 1-3), Data Capture (Steps 4-7),
and Data Display (Steps 8-12).
SET-UP PHASE
1. Press # to select the Snapshot mode from the test mode menu.
2. The trigger conditions and Replay Data options are displayed in a self-scrolling Snapshot Options menu.

F0: BEGINNING The trigger will be at the beginning of the captured data. After the trigger occurs,
the tester will continue to capture data until the memory is full, then the data will be
displayed. If not enough data samples have been collected to fill the tester memory
(because the x key was pressed before the tester memory was full), some
data samples that were captured before the trigger point will also be available for
display.
F1: CENTER If enough time has elapsed before and after the trigger point, a similar number of
data samples that occurred before and after the trigger point will be available for
display. However, if the trigger occurs at or near the start of the Data Capture
phase, there will be fewer samples before the trigger point available for display.
Also, if the x key is pressed after the trigger occurs, but before the tester
memory is full, fewer data samples captured after the trigger point will be available
for display.
F2: END Data that occurred before the trigger will be displayed. If the tester memory was
not full when the trigger occurred, some data samples captured after the trigger
point will also be available for display.
After the Data Capture phase, you can scroll through all of the stored data for display. In the Data Display
phase (Steps 8-12), data parameters are displayed in a manner identical to that of the Data List mode. You
can also specify the data sample you wish to display (Steps 8 and 9).

DESCRIPTION
DTC History provides you with additional fault information for the purpose of increasing serviceability.
This information, when used in conjunction with standard diagnosis procedures, can reduce the time you
spend trying to locate the cause of intermittent faults by identifying the degree of intermittence. Highly
intermittent (rarely occurring) faults are difficult to recreate and therefore are usually diagnosed differently
than frequent or permanent faults.
DTC History identifies the following information. Two “pages” of information are displayed for each of the
first five failures and three pages of information are displayed for the last failure.
The first five faults are displayed in the order in which they occurred. This information can be used to
identify situations where an initial fault that was detected no longer remains, but the fault conditions explain
the occurrence of a later fault.
The first page of information displays how often each of the first five faults have occurred. The second page
informs you how many drive cycles have occurred since the code was last set.
This information identifies intermittent fault conditions and the degree of intermittence. If a fault occurred 1
out of 35 drive cycles, an unusual condition may have occurred, such as a severe pothole, that caused the
fault. In any case, a fault this intermittent is going to be difficult to locate. Up front, you know special
diagnosis techniques are needed to identify the cause. If the fault occurred 10 out of 15 drive cycles, your
chances of identifying the fault are much greater and recreation is probably much easier. Again, you know
this before an attempt is made to identify the cause. If the fault occurs every drive cycle, the fault is
“HARD” or easy to duplicate. Diagnosis should be easier.
Last Failure
The last failure that occurred is identified specifically. This fault is what brought the customer in for repair.
Additionally, the following information identifies what was happening when the last fault occurred:
1. The first page of information about the last failure indicates the speed the EBCM believes the vehicle
was going at the time the fault occurred. An unreasonable number here may lead you to suspect wheel
speed sensor problems.
The status of the brake switch at the time of the fault (Off or On). This will tell you if there was any
brake application when the fault occurred. Only the state of the brake switch is known, the brake pedal
may have simply been depressed or shorted without any vehicle deceleration.
2. The second page of information about the last failure displays the status of the brake warning lamp at the
time of the fault (ON or OFF), and whether or not the brake had been depressed this ignition cycle. If the
brake switch circuit was OPEN, no brake input will be seen. Also, many drivers do not depress the brake
when starting the car but do prior to putting the car in gear. If no brake input was seen prior to the fault
and the brake switch circuit is OK, this information tells you the fault was probably detected shortly after
the ignition switch was turned on.
Also on the second page is whether or not the vehicle has been driven at a speed greater than 25 MPH
during this ignition cycle.
3. The third page displays whether or not an ABS stop was in progress when the fault occurred. This may
point to a fault caused by additional stresses or vibration the vehicle encountered when in an ABS stop.
Drive cycles since the last failure occurred are displayed. If zero drive cycles have occurred, the
customer drove in with the fault detected (ABS Warning Light probably flashing or on continuously). If
five drive cycles have occurred, no fault was present when the vehicle arrived for service. If no fault has
occurred for 40 drive cycles and only occurred once based on the intermittent information, the fault may
have occurred under unusual circumstances and a true “fault” may not exist.
NOTE
If no ABS faults have occurred for 100 drive cycles, the EBCM will clear
itself of all fault information.

ANY CODE/DTC A trigger occurs when any trouble code is set, unless status is INTERMITTENT.
An ( or x key press also causes a trigger.
SINGLE CODE/DTC You can select a specific trouble code that must be detected before the trigger will
be set. When F1:SINGLE CODE is selected, the TECH 1 screen displays
“SNAPSHOT MODE, ENTER TROUBLE CODE XX, (CODE + ENTER).” Use
numeric keys 0 - 9 to enter the trouble code number that you wish to cause the
trigger, then press the e key. The tester will continue to store data until the
specified trouble code is detected, unless the trouble code status is
INTERMITTENT. If the code you enter does not exist for the engine type being
tested, an “INVALID CODE” message will be displayed and the code will have to
be reentered. An ( or x key press will also cause a trigger.
MANUAL TRIGGER While operating the SNAPSHOT mode, you can always cause the trigger to be set
by pressing ( or x.
INTERMITTENT A trigger will occur when any INTERMITTENT or PRESENT code sets. This
mode aids you in diagnosing intermittent faults. An ( or x key press also
causes a trigger.
SOFT FAULT A trigger will occur when the ECU recognizes an intermittent fault, such as a loose
(4WAL only) wire which will break and make contact when driving over a rough road.
REPLAY DATA To replay previously captured data, press $ (press % for 4WAL). All data
captured during Snapshot will be retained in the tester memory for at least 24
hours, even if the tester is disconnected from the vehicle, or until it is overwritten
by a new Snapshot.
ABS STOP A trigger will occur when the brake, while driving, is applied hard enough to cause
(4WAL only) the 4WAL system to activate.
UPDATE RATE You have the option of selecting a Slow Data Rate or a Fast Data Rate. After the
Data Rate is selected, you are returned to the Snapshot Options menu.
F0: Fast Data Rate: All data samples sent by the ECU are collected and
stored for replay.
F1: Slow Data Rate : Data samples will be collected on a timed basis
rather than capturing and storing each sample sent by the ECU.
AUTOMATIC The tester examines the ABS data and triggers the SNAPSHOT if an abnormal
TRIGGER (ABS VI) condition occurs. The ABS automatic trigger feature is intended to identify
deviations in data or input signals that may not set an ABS code. If an automatic
trigger condition is encountered, it may provide information to support customer
complaints of irregular ABS performance or intermittent ABS warning lights. The
automatic trigger will occur if one of the following conditions exists:
• A sudden change in wheel speed. Be sure you are driving at a constant
speed on a clean, dry smooth surface when a trigger occurs. Spinning
the tires, locking the wheels while braking, driving through potholes, or
performing ABS stops will cause a trigger that is NOT identifying a
system problem.
• A very short loss of brake switch circuit input that may not set a code,
but will cause a momentary loss of ABS.
• If the red brake warning lamp turns on.
• If the battery voltage goes above 16 volts.
• If the battery voltage falls below 9.3 volts in an ABS stop.
• If the battery voltage falls below 11 volts when not in an ABS stop.
The intent of the ABS automatic trigger feature is to identify short-
duration intermittent problems. For this reason, the data is taken at a high
rate of speed: approximately every 0.1 second.
CAUSE OF When & is selected, the cause of the trigger is played. Possible causes for a
TRIGGER trigger are listed below.
*F9* KEY PRESS : Indicates which key press caused the trigger: ( or
x.
TRIGGER POINT In addition to a trigger condition selection, if you select ^, you have the option
of selecting a trigger point.
F1:CENTER : If enough time has elapsed before and after the trigger point, a
similar number of data samples that occurred before and after the trigger point will
be available for display. However, if the trigger occurs at or near the start of the
Data Capture phase, there will be fewer samples before the trigger point available
for display. Also, if the x key is pressed after the trigger occurs, but before
the tester's memory is full, fewer data samples captured after the trigger point will
be available for display.
F2:END OF DATA : Data that occurred before the trigger will be displayed. If
the tester's memory was not full when the trigger occurred, some data samples
captured after the trigger point will also be available for display.

turn the ABS motors on and off, and control their direction (apply or release). Motor movement can be
confirmed by comparing what is commanded by the tester and what the EBCM sees as a response (motor
feedback). When the motor is moving, the feedback current will be less than the command current. When
the piston is at the top or bottom of the bore or stuck, the feedback current will equal the command current.
The solenoids will automatically be turned off if left on for more than 30 seconds and must cool before
being turned back on. The motors will automatically be turned off after 5 seconds. An “INHIBITED”
message will be displayed on line 1 if additional cooling time is required.

Note that the top row of function keys () - @) control tests for the Left Front functions. The next
row of function keys ($ - ^ ) control the same functions for the Right Front wheel. Rear wheel
components are controlled by function keys on the bottom row (* and (). Also, the selection is
arranged so the first key in a row controls motor apply, the second key controls motor release, and the
third key controls solenoids.
Once you have selected a function to test, use the u key to turn function ON and the d key to turn
function OFF. Pressing the e key toggles the enable relay ON and OFF.
During a motor apply or a motor release, the command and feedback currents for that motor are
sampled. Those samples can be replayed immediately after the motor is turned off.
To select a different function to test, you can either press x to return to the function selection menu
to choose a different test, or just press the function key for the test you want to perform.
6. Press x to return to the Manual Control Test menu. Press x again to display the Select Test

7. Have an assistant try to spin the wheel selected. It should not spin. This is to verify base brake apply.
8. Press the u key to start the test. The tester will display “RELEASE” on the screen and your assistant
should be able to spin the wheel selected. This verifies ABS brake pressure release. The tester will then
display “HOLD” on the screen and a countdown timer. During this portion of the test, the brake pressure
previously released is being held and your assistant should be able to spin the selected wheel. This
verifies that the ABS unit can “HOLD” the released pressure and checks for internal leaks. The tester
then commands the ABS modulator to “APPLY” (APPLY is displayed on the screen). Your assistant
should not be able to spin the wheel selected at this point. This test verifies that the ABS modulator can
reapply brake pressure to the selected channel. Refer to the vehicle's Service Manual for component
servicing if a problem is found during this test.
9. At the conclusion of the test, the tester instructs you to take your foot off the brake pedal. When the
pedal is released, the tester returns to the beginning of the Hydraulic test. Run the test on another wheel,

For some actuator tests, the tester can automatically determine the correct function of the actuators.
CAUTION! These tests should only be run with the parking brake on and the wheels
adequately secured. Any other mode of operation is not recommended and
CAUTION is unsafe. ALWAYS PUT THE PARKING BRAKE ON AND BLOCK
THE WHEELS WHEN USING THIS TEST MODE.
There are three types of actuator tests: Basic Output, Automatic, and User Output Control. The chart below
briefly explains how each test works and which actuators can be checked with each test. A detailed example
of operating each test type is given on the following pages.
TEST-TYPE OPERATION
BASIC OUTPUT The tester controls the actuator. Your answers (YES/NO) to
questions asked by the tester determine if the test passed or
failed.
USER OUTPUT CONTROL You control the actuator and answer questions (YES/NO) to
determine if the test passed or failed.
When F5:ACTUATOR TEST is selected, the tester displays a menu containing all possible tests for the
system under test. There may be more selections above and below the visible selections. Pressing u or d
will cause the cursor “*” to move up or down. Press u or d until the cursor is positioned next to the
actuator test you wish to select, then press y.

After using the ISUZU Systems Cartridge, a few simple steps will ensure that you get the most life out of
your diagnostic tool.
First, before powering down, clear any trouble codes that may have been set during the course of
troubleshooting the vehicle electronics.
Next, remove power to the tester by unplugging the cigarette lighter adapter and then disconnect the ALDL/
DLC cable from the ALDL/DLC. You may want to inspect the cable, connector, and cigarette lighter for any
damage or corrosion.
NOTE If you have been using an ALDL/DLC Adapter during testing, be sure to
remove the adapter from the ALDL/DLC and store it in your tester storage
case.
Finally, unplug the cartridge and store it and the cable in its traveling case.
If the tester should become dirty, you may clean it with mild detergent or hand soap. Avoid using harsh
solvents such as petroleum-based cleaning agents, Benzene, Trichloroethylene, etc. Although the TECH 1,
TECH 1A, and Mastertech are water resistant, they are not waterproof, so be sure to thoroughly dry off the
tester prior to storage.
Although the TECH 1, TECH 1A, or Mastertech was designed to give you years of trouble- free service,
occasional problems may occur that require special attention. Some of these problems may be corrected with
a few simple steps. Examples of most of the displays which you might see under abnormal conditions are
shown. In addition, the most likely cause for the condition is given, as well as other possible causes and
recommendations on how to isolate or eliminate the problem. If the problem appears to be in the tester,
perform the Self-test as described in the Operator's Manual.
