Optics - Conceptual Questions
1. What happens to the thickness of the eye lens when we look at a nearby object?
-> Lens becomes thicker to increase curvature and reduce focal length (due to accommodation).
2. Why can't a person with hypermetropia see nearby objects clearly?
-> Their eye lens can't become thick enough -> focal length is too long -> image forms behind the
retina.
3. What type of lens is used to correct myopia (nearsightedness)?
-> Concave lens -> diverges light to bring the image back onto the retina.
4. Why do we squint our eyes to see distant objects more clearly?
-> Squinting reduces the aperture of the eye -> increases depth of focus and reduces spherical
aberration.
5. What happens when an object is placed at the focus of a convex lens?
-> The image is formed at infinity (real, inverted, highly enlarged).
6. When is the magnification of a concave mirror positive and greater than 1?
-> When the object is placed between the focus and pole -> image is virtual, upright, and magnified.
7. What kind of image is formed on the retina of a human eye?
-> Real, inverted, and diminished
8. Why do our eyes take time to adjust when we enter a dark room from bright light?
-> Pupils take time to dilate and allow more light in (dark adaptation).
9. A person sees nearby objects clearly but not distant ones. What is the defect?
-> Myopia
10. Why is the image blurry if the eye lens cannot change its shape properly?
-> The eye cannot adjust its focal length, so the image may not fall on the retina.
11. What happens to the image distance in the eye when object distance increases?
-> It remains the same because image always forms on the retina.
