Badminton: History
✓ Origin:
o Badminton was played in royal courts of England till 1873.
o It was inspired by an Indian game called ‘Poona’.
✓ Rules Publication:
o Rules were first published by Colonel Selby in 1867.
✓ English Badminton Federation:
o Founded in 1893.
o Conducted the first All England Championship in 1899, one of the most
prestigious international tournaments.
✓ Major Tournaments:
o Thomas Cup (for men) started in 1948.
o Uber Cup (for women) started in 1956.
✓ Badminton World Federation (BWF):
o Formed in 1934.
✓ Asian Games:
o Badminton was included in 1962 Asian Games at Jakarta.
✓ World Championship:
o Started in 1977, held every 2 years.
✓ Olympic Games:
o Became part of Olympic Games in 1992 at Barcelona.
✓ Badminton in Asia:
o Very popular in South-East Asia, especially in Thailand and Malaysia.
✓ Badminton Association of India (BAI):
o Regulates team selection, training, and coaching in India.

• Singles Court: 13.40 m × 5.18 m (44 ft × 17 ft) (including lines)

• Height of Poles: 1.55 m (5 ft 1 in) (measured over sideline for doubles)

Badminton: Latest Rules & Regulations
A. General Rules
✓ Badminton is played by hitting the shuttlecock over the net using a racket.
✓ It is played in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles formats.
✓ Two ways to win a rally:
o Shuttle lands in opponent’s side.
o Opponent commits a fault.
✓ A fault occurs if:
o Shuttle goes out of bounds.
o It touches the court on own side or net.
o It doesn’t cross the net.
o It touches a player or their clothes.
o There’s any rules infringement.
B. Scoring System
✓ A game is played to 21 points using continuous scoring.
✓ Match is best of three games.
✓ At 20-20 (deuce), a player/team must win by 2 points.
✓ Continuous point scoring is followed:
o If the server loses the rally, they lose both service and point.
✓ Starting Score: Begins with “Love All”.
✓ Service sides:
o Even score: serve from right side.
o Odd score: serve from left side.
✓ Change of sides:
o After each game.
o At the 11th point in the final game.
C. Singles Game Rules
➢ One player per half court.
➢ Player covers only own half-court area.
➢ Even points: Serve from right side to opponent’s right side (e.g., 0, 2, 4…).
➢ Odd points: Serve from left side to opponent’s left side.
➢ Serve is diagonal and must land in opponent’s proper service box.
➢ Long and high serve is common in singles.
➢ Continuous service is given as long as the player is gaining points.
D. Doubles Game Rules
❖ Two players per team.
❖ Game starts with serve from right side.
❖ The shuttle must be lifted only to same side player in opponent’s court.
❖ If server wins the rally, same player continues service and rotates position with
partner.
❖ Only one player serves per team at a time.
❖ Side rotation occurs only after winning the rally and gaining points.
❖ Serving Pattern: Performed as long as the team gains points.
❖ Strategy:
1. Short and low serve preferred.
2. Front-back positioning for attack.
3. Side-by-side for defense.
Officials’ Duties (As per New Rules):
1. Referee
o Head of all matches and tournaments.
o Makes sure rules are followed.
o Handles player complaints and protests.
o Can overrule umpire’s decision in special cases.
2. Umpire
o Main official during a match.
o Sits on a high chair at the net post.
o Keeps the score, announces faults, and gives warnings.
o Decides lets, faults, and manages the flow of the game.
o Has authority over all on-court matters.
3. Service Judge
o Watches the server carefully.
o Checks for foot faults and service faults (e.g., shuttle hit above waist or
wrong racket angle).
o Uses hand signals to indicate faults.
4. Line Judges
o Sit at the sides and corners of the court.
o Watch whether the shuttle lands inside or outside the boundary lines.
o Raise arm to signal when unsure; can be overruled by umpire.
5. Technical Officials (New Inclusion)
o Ensure correct use of technology like Hawk-eye or Instant Review System.
o Support fair decision-making using slow motion.
6. Scorer (If Appointed)
o Assists umpire in keeping the official score.
o Fills in score sheets and match records.
Fundamental Skills of Badminton:
1. Grip
• Forehand Grip – Like holding a handshake; used for powerful shots on racket side.
• Backhand Grip – Thumb pressing on the flat side; used for non-racket side strokes.
2. Footwork
• Helps reach the shuttle quickly.
• Must be fast, balanced, and in rhythm.
• Important for defense and attack.
3. Service (Serve)
• High Serve – Sent deep into the back court; used in singles.
• Low Serve – Just over the net; common in doubles.
• Flick Serve – Looks like low serve but goes to the back; surprise move.
Note: Must serve below waist height, diagonally across court.
4. Strokes
• Overhead Forehand/Backhand Stroke – Powerful hits from above the head.
• Underarm Stroke – Played when shuttle is low.
