This course is designed for beginners. In this course, students will learn basic Japanese grammar and words. Students will also
practice listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Students are expected to memorize words and read the grammar notes prior to class. It will take approximately - min. to

This course provides a comprehensive approach to develop four basic language skills listening, speaking, reading,and writing to
enhance students overall Japanese language ability.

This course is designed for those students who need to learn basic grammar and everyday vocabulary in a highly intensive manner.
The course covers lesson contents of Comprehensive Japanese and and the lessons will proceed at double the pace of these
courses. The classes meet five times per week from Tuesday to Saturday. Students will have a minute lesson each day. Either
a vocabulary or a grammar quiz is given on a daily basis. Students are expected to study new vocabulary, and to read the
grammar explanation section in the textbooks for the quizzes and preparatory work for each lesson. At least TWO to THREE
hours of out-of-class study time will be required for preparation for and revision of a daily lesson

. To master two syllabic scripts i.e. hiragana and katakana , grammar and sentence structures, vocabulary at elementary level.
. To be able to communicate using the basic grammar and vocabulary appropriate to a given situation.

Course outline

This class is designed for students with no prior knowledge of Chinese characters and wish to start learning kanji and/or to establish
solid foundation for learning kanji. In this class,students will learn the meaning of kanji components, how to use and write kanji, and
basic kanji words. At the completion of the course, students will be able to write and comprehend basic kanji in context.

This course is designed to engage students in a discussion of the different aspects of culture, to build cultural awareness. They will
compare and contrast several aspects of culture, using personal examples.
Students are expected to explore their own ideas and opinions on some cultural issues and engage in working together in pairs or
small groups to gather precise segment of information. The topics are related to customs, products, and values of Japan and other

Outline of the Course: In this course the students are expected to discuss themselves and their surroundings. And they write to
summarize. Through these activities students will learn the Japanese language.
Under the themes such as myself , myself and others , and myself and the surrounding society , the classroom activities will
take a place. Each theme has small project. This project must be submitted for each class.
The third part of the course will include a mini-trip in Tokyo in small groups to learn about the old and new things of Tokyo.
After the trip the students will do presentations about their trip and create individual report on the experience.
The mini-trip will not take a place within the class time. Students will complete their mini-trip outside of class time in groups
Ueno or Nihombashi are possible destinations for these trips.
Studying Japanese language by yourself is most likely difficult and boring. Let s learn various words and expressions through

This class is aimed for beginning learners of the Japanese language. In this course, we will learn and understand important
points of pronunciation single sound, pausing, rhythm, accent,intonation . Using this knowledge, students in this class will
practice speaking about topics useful to the learner focusing on the accurate application of the rules learned. Timely feedback
will be provided by the teacher and classmates in order to develop understanding and knowledge of pronunciation. In addition,
learners will develop self-monitoring skills by being able to identify pronunciation standards while listening to both their own
pronunciation and that of others, by listening and speaking opportunities in class. A vocabulary rhythm and/or accent quiz is

CJL . During class, we read Japanese graded readers JGR which are designed to help learners improve their reading ability

In basic classes students usually learn vocabulary and grammar first. Later, students read various vocabulary and grammar exercise.
But reading is not only for studying vocabulary and grammar, but also to appreciate reading by itself for pleasure. Reading is for
feeling, thinking and connecting with your life. In order to talk about your impressions and thoughts, we ll read The Little
Prince in this class together. In beginning you can speak in your language, but you should try to speak in Japanese little by little
as much as possible.
I ll distribute the Japanese and English text. Read the text in any language you choose in your home and choose / sentences
that impressed you. In class we ll read those sentences in Japanese.
I ll also distribute a picture book of The Little Prince . Later You ll write your sentences in the picture book. It ll be your own
personal copy of The Little Prince . In the last lesson we ll share with each other our book of The Little Prince .

In this course, you will learn meanings and functions of Japanese particles, such as ga , wa , wo , de , ni , kara and so on,
which may be difficult to use properly not only for beginners but for advanced learners as well. The approach used for explanation
of these particles in this class is based on Cognitive Linguistics. It has been reported by some researches that this approach has
advantage over traditional way of teaching particles, however, the effect of this new approach is still under investigation. Therefore
this class will be a pilot case.

Vocabulary

The class is aimed at letting the students to learn kanji in an independent and active way.
The students will create each one s lifemapping based on that they are asked to actively find kanji vocabulariesthat are used in
each living area such as college, part-time job, dormitory,society, etc.
Those kanji vocabularies should be organized by the place where they are found, the reason why they are chosen, the episode if
any and the students will share them with others in the class. It is aimed atlearning more kanji vocabularies with their classmates
than learning individually.
The students will be grouped to collect kanji vocabularies on the subject that they decide to study in the area of food, clothing,
and shelter . Their cooperation and collaboration are important in this program.
Let s improve your communication capability by having a good command of kanji vocabularies thorough interactions with other
students.

To be able to find kanji necessary for your communication on your initiative.

In this course, we will consider a language by observing and rethinking how language is actually used in the city that have a
diversity of people living including in classes, on campus, etc. . We will focus on places that are a part of our daily lives, such as
the facilities on campus, convenience stores, or cafes. We will then examine how we use language within these places, and explore
our language.

On successful completion of our week course, students will be able to:


cultivate their language through observation and experience of the language used in classrooms, on campus, and in the nearby
city streets.
cultivate an attitude towards the language of the city as a member of Japanese society, instead of simply learning a language.
cultivate an attitude of reflection on what kind of language you want to use and how you will learn it in the future.
