SPN 641/FMI 11
This diagnostic is typically Smart Remote Actuator 5 has Restricted Operability.
ACTUATOR CHECK
Check as follows:
1. Connect DDDL/DDRS (latest version).
2. Turn ignition ON (key ON, engine OFF).
3. Verify software level of MCM is 63.0.1 or newer.
4. Is the software level 63.0.1 or newer?
[a] Yes; go to step 5.
[b] No; update software and check to see if fault codes become active after completing update
according to service letter (10 TS-11).
5. Check for multiple codes.
[a] If SPN 168/FMI 1 (low battery voltage) or SPN 2795/FMI 9 (CAN3 communication error)
is present with SPN 641/FMI 11, troubleshoot them first.
[b] If only SPN 641/FMI 11 is present, go to step 6.
6. Using DDDL/DDRS, perform the Turbo Hysteresis test.
[a] If you are unable to perform the Turbo Hysteresis test, go to step 7.
[b] If the Turbo Hysteresis test fails, go to step 7.
[c] If the Turbo Hysteresis test is a pass, repeat the test to see if the results are the same. If the
results are the same, Verify repairs. If the repeat test fails, go to step 7.
7. Disconnect the turbo actuator harness connector and inspect harness connector for signs of
corrosion, spread, loose or damaged pins or signs of wire damage. Repair as necessary.
8. Check the actuator supply voltage.
9. Measure the voltage between pins 1 and 2 of the turbo actuator harness connector.
[a] If the voltage is less than 11 volts, repair the cause of the low voltage. Verify repairs.
[b] If the voltage is greater than 11 volts, go to step 10.
10. Turn the ignition OFF.
11. Measure the resistance between pins 3 and 4 of the turbo actuator harness connector. Is the
resistance between 55-60 Ω?
[a] Yes; 19.
[b] No; go to step 12.
12. Disconnect the MCM 120–pin connector.
13. Inspect the MCM 120-pin connector and 120-pin harness connector for signs of corrosion,
spread, loose or damaged pins or signs of wire damage.
[a] If signs of damage are found, repair as necessary.
[b] If no signs of damage, go to step 14.
14. Measure the resistance between pins 74 and 75 of the MCM 120-pin module connector.
[a] If the resistance is between 55 and 65 Ω, go to step 15.
[b] If the resistance is not between 55 and 65 Ω, replace the MCM.
15. Measure the resistance between pin 3 of the turbo actuator harness connector and pin 74 of the
MCM 120-pin harness connector.
[a] If the resistance is greater than 3 Ω, repair the open circuit between pin 3 of the turbo
actuator harness connector and pin 74 of the MCM 120-pin harness connector. Verify
repairs.
[b] If the resistance is less than 3 Ω, go to step 16.
16. Measure the resistance between pin 4 of the turbo actuator harness connector and pin 75 of the
MCM 120-pin harness connector.
[a] If the resistance is greater than 3 Ω, repair the open circuit between pin 4 of the turbo
actuator harness connector and pin 75 of the MCM 120-pin harness connector. Verify
repairs.
[b] If the resistance is less than 3 Ω, go to step 17.
NOTE:
Failure to follow these instructions will result in inaccurate diagnosis of the actuator or the
turbocharger.
17. Measure the resistance between pins 3 and 4 of the turbo actuator harness connector.
[a] If the resistance is less than 10K ohms, repair the short in the harness between pins 3 and
4 of the turbo actuator harness connector.
[b] If the resistance is greater than 10K ohms, go to step 18.
18. Inspect the harness for signs of chaffing or other damage; focus near mounting points and
bends in the harness, looking for signs of wear.
[a] If damage is found, repair as necessary.
[b] If no damage is found, go to step 19.
19. Reconnect the turbo actuator harness and 120-pin MCM harness connectors.
20. Perform Double Hysteresis test. Refer to section .
VERIFY REPAIRS
Verify repairs as follows:
1. Turn ignition OFF.
2. Reconnect any electrical connections that were disconnected to perform the diagnosis.
3. Clear codes with DDDL 7.0 or latest version.
4. Start and bring engine up to operating temperature; over 60°C (140°F).
5. Verify operation is satisfactory and no warning lamps illuminate. If warning lamps illuminate,
troubleshoot the codes. If assistance is required, call the Detroit ™ Customer Support Center at
855-253-0423.
