THE SAUNS are back in Varanasi

Read the following story carefully and answer the questions given at the end of it.

Introduction- Dolphins are so close to you. Yeah, these beautiful creatures have
decided to make Varanasi their home, once again. They are right in your city, (in
the vicinity of Dakhwa village) and they are waiting for you to come and know them.
So, use these summer holidays to visit DOLPHINS of Kashi.
Barely 45 minutes away from Varanasi, is a patch of the Ganga that is dolphin
heaven. A dolphin paradise, in the middle of chaos with more than 50 dolphins.
Dolphin is also known as "Ganga puputaka" in Sanskrit. In our Indian culture,
dolphin has a sacred place and is associated with the deity Ganga, who is depicted
with her divine vehicle, the Makara – an animal with the head of a crocodile and
tail of a dolphin in Brahmavaivarta purana.

Main body of story:

1) The Ganges River Dolphins or Gangetic Dolphin, known as Sauns in Uttar

Pradesh and Bihar, is the national aquatic animal of India. However, many
Indians are unaware of this fact.
2) The elusive freshwater cetacean is an umbrella species of the Ganga and
Brahmaputra River system and has a significant ecological importance as its
presence indicates the good health of an area.
3) Dolphins are highly relevant for maintaining biodiversity of aquatic eco-
system. Biodiversity refers to the variety of life forms, including plants,
animals, and microorganisms, and their interactions within ecosystems.
4) An umbrella species is a species that's chosen for conservation because
protecting it also protects other species in its ecosystem. This is known as
the "umbrella effect".
5) The species is listed under the ‘Endangered’ category of the International
Union for the Conservation of Nature as it is losing its habitat due to
anthropogenic (man-made activities) activities.
6) These animals were once found in large groups called ‘pod’ but nowadays,
the groups have reduced in size.
7) The Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district,
the only sanctuary for our national aquatic animal, is facing a decline in its
dolphin population. On the other hand, there are some deep pools in the
Ganga River system outside of Vikramshila, where the dolphins are
prospering.
8) I came across one such deep water pool recently. It is situated in the Ganga
near Dhakwa village (near Varanasi-Ghazipur border) of Varanasi district,
Uttar Pradesh. The village is a 45-minute ride away from Sarnath.
9) Dakhwa is the village nearest to the confluence of the Ganga and Gomti
rivers. “It’s the confluence point where water is the purest. And it is the
main reason why Gangetic dolphins that are considered to be the river
pollution indicators, are in abundance here.”
10) Most of the men in the village are fishers and if you visit the area, you
will see quite a few small boats lying there. The place is calm and the waters
are considerably clean, with minimal water and noise pollution. The place
has an old Shiva temple where people gather during festivals.
11) Nishad, one of the residents of this village is working hard to protect
this majestic animal with the help of villagers. Most of the residents of this
village catch and sale fish for their livelihood.
12) He says, “I told the fishermen two things—first, to stop using the
gillnets that are the most lethal for dolphins and second, to stop polluting
the river as dolphins are the true indicators of the river (purity) and are very
sensitive towards pollution,” he adds.
13) Gillnets, which have layers of fine nylon mesh, are the first choice for
many small-scale fishers. The dolphins need to rise up to the water surface
to breathe. The calves need to come up every 10 seconds to one minute
while adult dolphins surface every three minutes to breathe. If trapped in
fishing nets placed under water, the dolphins cannot emerge from the water
to breathe, leading to their painful death, he explains.
14) He also made the villagers aware of pollution. “I told them not to use
polythene, stop putting puja samagri (material) into the Ganga. I also told
them not to pollute the river water by washing clothes with detergent and
other chemicals.”

Conclusion: Suman Devi, village head of Dhakwa, says, “Fishermen have

stopped using gill nets and desisted from polluting the river. If a dolphin gets
stuck in their net, they make sure that they release it back into the river. It’s for
this reason that the dolphins are back in Dhakwa.” I wish we are able to find
more such places and try and conserve the dolphins before they vanish from
our river systems!
