PRACTICAL 3 : CRITICAL THINKING
What is a carbon footprint?
A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases, primarily carbon dioxide, emitted into
the atmosphere as a result of human activities, so just transportation energy use and food
production. It is usually measured in terms of tons of Co2 emitted per year.
Impact of of carbon footprint:
1. Climate change: Carbon emissions contribute to global warming, altering weather
patterns.
2. Environmental degradation: Increased emissions lead to pollution and loss of
biodiversity.
3. Human health: Rising pollution level can causes respiratory and cardiovascular
issues.
4. Economic costs: Climate related disasters and health problems increase financial
burdens.
Solution for reduction:
1. Energy efficiency: Use energy efficient appliances, buildings and renewable energy
resources.
2. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Minimise waste and promote recycling to lower emissions from
landfills.
3. Sustainable transportation: Shift to public transport or electric vehicles to reduce emissions.
4. Afforestation: Plant trees and support reforestation efforts to absorb Co2 from the
atmosphere.
Carbon footprint of a housewife
Carbon footprint of a corporate worker
Carbon footprint of a college student
Carbon footprint analysis:
The given data provides a snapshot in the carbon footprint of the three individuals:
College student: 6.6
Corporate worker: 18.1
Housewife: 5.5
Analysis:
1. The college student’s carbon footprint is relatively moderate likely due to shared
accommodation, limited travel and a simple lifestyle.
2. The carbon footprint of corporate employee is significantly higher, likely due to
frequent business trips, a larger living space and a more energy-intensive lifestyle.
3. The house housewife’s carbon footprint is the lowest, likely due to more frugal
lifestyle, reduce travel and a focus on domestic activities.
