Assignment #01

Question No: 1
Answer:
1.The usage of a hub is probably the cause of the high collision rate. Hubs broadcast information to
every device, which can lead to collisions when several devices send data simultaneously. This is
typical in hub-based Ethernet networks, particularly when big files are being transferred.
2.Frame drops might be due to:
Corrupted or malformed frames.
Protocol mismatch
Network misconfiguration.
3. A network analyzer can :
Detect collisions and show if the hub is causing congestion.
Identify unknown frame types.
Monitor errors( like malformed frames)
Question No: 2
Answer:
1. I recommend 10Base-T Ethernet with hubs.
Reasons:
Cost-effective: Hubs are relatively inexpensive.
Ease of installation and maintenance: Uses standard twisted-pair cabling, which is
flexible and easy to install.
Minimal downtime for cable issues: In a star topology, if one cable fails, only that
one computer is affected — not the whole network.
Scalability: Easy to add or remove computers without disturbing the network.
Higher reliability: Star topology is more robust compared to bus topologies.
2. You should use 10Base-T compatible NICs with RJ-45 connectors.
Reasons:
RJ-45 ports are standard for 10Base-T cabling.
10Base-T NICs are inexpensive and readily available.
They are designed for twisted-pair cables which aligns with the chosen network
setup.
3. Thick Ethernet:
High cost: Thick coaxial cable is expensive.
Difficult installation: Thick, stiff cables are hard to run and install, especially in an
office environment.
Troubleshooting problems: Finding faults in the cable is time-consuming.
Limited flexibility: Not easy to add/remove devices without disrupting the network.
Thin Ethernet:
Still uses bus topology: A single cable fault can take down the entire network.
Lower reliability: Connectors and cables are prone to physical damage and signal
degradation.
Outdated technology: Harder to find replacement parts and technicians familiar
with it today.
Limited scalability: Adding more devices complicates cable management and
reduces overall reliability.
