DINLIN-DINLIN DCS 222 TUTORIAL QUESTIONS
Q1. What are systems analysis and design?
Answer
System analysis is the process of collecting and interpreting facts, identifying the problems, and
decomposition of a system into its components. It specifies what the system should do
System design: is the process of planning a new business system or replacing an existing one by defining
its components to satisfy the specific requirement
Q2. What is the relationship between systems analysis and design?
Answer
They are closely interconnected. The relationship is that the output of the analysis phase serves as the
input for the design phase.
Q3. What is/are the difference(s) between systems analysis and design?
Answer
S/n Feature System analysis System design
1. Focus Understanding the problem domain Specifying the solution and designing
and gathering requirement the system
2. output Requirements documents System design specifications
3 Techniques Interviews, surveys, observations UML, DFDs, ERDs, Decision trees
4. Level of detail High level understanding Detailed specification
Q4. What is a system?
Answer
System: It is derived from the word “systema”. It means an organized relationship between any set of
components to achieve some common cause or objective.
Q5. What are the three (3) basic constraints of a system?
Answer
1. A system must have some structure and behavior which is designed to achieve a predefined objective
2. Interconnectivity and interdependence must exist among the system components
3. The objectives of the organization have a high priority than the objectives of its subsystems.
Q6. Discuss any four (4) properties of a system.
Answer
1. Organization: organization implies structure and order. it is the arrangement of components
that helps to achieve predetermined objectives
2. Interaction: it is defined by the manner in which the components with each other.
3. Interdependence: Means how the components of a system depend on one another
4. Integration: is concern with how system’s components are connected together.
Q7. Draw a diagram that depicts the elements of a system and how they are related.

Q8. What are the functions of the input/output component of a system?
Answer
The main aim of a system is to produce output which is useful for its user
Inputs are the information that enters into the system for processing
Output is the outcome of processing
Q9. What are the functions of the control component of the system?
Answer
It guides the system
It controls the pattern of activities governing input, processing and output
The behavior of the system is controlled by the operating system and software
Q10. What is the difference between an open and closed system?
Answer
An open system must interact with its environment while a closed system does not interact with its
environment, it is isolated from environmental influences
Q11. What is the difference between a permanent and temporary system?
Answer
The diff is that a permanent system persist for a long time. For example: Business policies. Whereas, a
temporal system is made for specified time and after that, they are demolished
Q12. Draw the triangle that depicts the different categories of information. `
Answer
Q13. What is managerial information? 14.
Answer
Managerial information: A type of instruction required by middle management for short and
intermediate range planning which is in terms of months. Example sales analysis
Q14. List three (3) techniques used in systems analysis.
Answer
1. Interviews : gathering information from stakeholders through face-to-face or online interviews
2. Surveys: collecting data from a large number of respondents using questionnaires.
3. Observation: observing the current system in operation to understand its processes.
4. Document analysis: Examining existing documents, reports and manuals.
Q15. List the phases of system development life circle.
Answer
1. preliminary study 4. System analysis 7. testing
2. feasibility study 5. System design 8. Implementation
3. detailed system study 6. Coding 9. Maintenance
