Lumbar extension in standing

Therapist`s aim
To stretch or maintain range of the lower back.
Therapist`s instructions
Position the patient in standing with their feet apart. Instruct the
patient to place their hands on their back and to support their lower
back while extending.

Lumbar extension in prone


Therapist`s aim
To stretch or maintain range of the lower back.
Therapist`s instructions
Position the patient prone with hands placed on the floor beside their
shoulders. Instruct the patient to extend the elbows and lift the upper
trunk as high as possible. Ensure the pelvis and lower limbs remain
on the support surface and that the patient feels a stretch in the lower
back.

Bridge with a ball

To strengthen the hamstrings and gluteal muscles.
Therapist`s instructions
Position the client so they are lying supine on a plinth with their legs
on top of a Swiss ball/physio ball. Instruct the client to push through

has a level pelvis.

To increase strength in the quadriceps.
Therapist`s instructions
Tie a resistance band firmly around the patient’s lower shins. Position
the patient in a chair with their thighs supported and feet on the floor.
Instruct the patient to slide one foot backwards and resting on the
ground. Instruct the patient to tighten the muscles in their thigh, and
straighten the knee.
Precautions
Only straighten knee to edge of discomfort (if any).

Knee extension with Theraband- Variation


Therapist`s aim
To increase strength in the quadriceps.
Therapist`s instructions
Tie resistance band around lower shins and the aligned leg of a chair.
Position the patient in a chair with their thighs supported and feet on
the floor. Instruct the patient to tighten the muscles in their thigh, and
straighten the knee.
Precautions
Only straighten knee to edge of discomfort (if any).

Position the patient on a step. Instruct the patient to keep one leg on
the step and have one leg off the side of the step. Instruct the patient
to bend the knee on the step and slowly lower the other leg to the
floor. Ensure that the knee remains in line with the centre of the step
and that the pelvis remains level.

the shoulders remain over the hips and the weight-bearing knee
flexes in line with the foot pointing forward.

degrees. Adjust the theraband around the knee so that the pull of the
theraband provides resistance to knee extension. Instruct the patient

Instruct the client to shift their weight to one leg, bend their knee

Monitor loaded leg knee position so the knee is not rolling in and
maintain level hip position.
