Tutorial 6-1-1

The document contains a tutorial sheet for the Analog & Digital Communication course at Jaypee Institute of Information Technology, focusing on various problems related to delta modulation, sampling frequency, and signaling formats. It includes calculations for minimum sampling frequency, maximum amplitude to avoid slope overload, and waveform generation for binary sequences in different signaling formats. Additionally, it addresses bandwidth calculations for PCM signals and data rates for telephone lines using raised cosine pulses.

Analog & Digital Communication (18B11EC212)
Tutorial Sheet: 6

1. [CO3] Find the minimum sampling frequency (fs) min, to avoid slope overload when x
(t) = cos (2π800t) and step size 0.1.
2. [ CO3] A Delta Modulator system operates at 3 times Nyquist rate for signal with 3.3
kHz bandwidth. The quantization step is 250 mV. Determine the maximum amplitude of
a 1 kHz input sinusoid for which the DM does not show slope overload.
3. [CO3] The a message signal m(t) be the input to a delta modulator where m(t)= 6
sin(2π×103)t + 4 sin(4π ×103)t V, with t in seconds. Determine the minimum pulse rate that
will prevent slope overload, if the step size is 0.314 V.
4. [CO3] The input to a linear delta modulator is a sinusoidal signal whose frequency vary from
200 Hz to 4000 Hz. The input is sampled at eight times the Nyquist rate. The peak amplitude of
the sinusoidal signal is 1 Volt.
a. Determine the value of the step size in order to avoid slope overload when the input
signal frequency is 800 Hz.
b. What is the peak amplitude of the input signal to just overload the modulator, when the
input signal frequency is 200 Hz.
c. Is the modulator overloaded when the input signal frequency is 4 kHz.
5. [CO3] Consider the binary sequence 0100101. Draw the waveform for the following signaling
formats. (i) Unipolar NRZ (ii) Polar RZ (iii) AMI RZ
6. [CO3] Consider the binary sequence with a long sequence of 1s followed by a single 0 and then
a long sequence of 1s. Draw the waveforms for this sequence using the following signaling
formats
(i) Unipolar NRZ
(ii) Polar RZ
(iii) AMI RZ
(iv) Split-phase (Manshester)
7. [CO3] A 664 Kbps binary PCM polar NRZ signal is passed through a communication system
with a raised cosine filter with roll-off factor 0.25. Determine the bandwidth of the filtered PCM
signal.
8. [CO3] A certain telephone line bandwidth is 3.5 KHz. Calculate the data rate that can be
transmitted if we use binary signaling with the raised cosine pulses and the roll off factor α=0.25..
