BOOP: A MULTIFUNCTIONAL MOBILE APPLICATION

PROVIDING PET-CARE SERVICES AND ADOPTION
PLATFORM TO STRAY ANIMALS

Vncent Landicho, Arvien Mandalupe Hannah Monleon & Joel Banzil

Due to errands and other reasons owners frequently ignore their

pets whFch may eventually result in abandonment. According to PAWS
(2019) 12 million stray animals live in the Philippines. If no one cares for
people's pets or doesn't trust others this can lead to pet neglect and
poor animal welfare. It can be challenging to provide pet care if there is
no easy access to pet care services. For instance tnding a pet sitter
and prospective adopters could be difficult. To solve this problem this
study aims to develop a multrfunctional mobile application that provides
pet care services to pet owners and potential pet adopters to lessen the
risk of pet abandonment or neglect. Through surveys done by the
researchers, they found what pet care services are most desired by
pet owners. Services such as pet boarding pet sitting pet grooming
and adoption are preferred and will be provided in the application. The
target audiences will be offered access to pet care services through
this. They can reduce pet care neglect and provide a platform of
adoptable stray animals further to decrease the number of stray
animals in the Philippines.

INTRODUCTION

Pets have been integral to human lives for centuries, offerin g

non-p et owners. according to Robinson et al. (nd). PIaying with a dog, cat

For most p eople interactin g wilti either dogs or cats is
beneficial emotionally and mentally.
Even though owning a pet has many a dvanta ges for humans, takin g
care of a pet is a complex challenge that comes with p et owners hip. Pet care
can be particularly challenging especially in the Philippines, for a number of
reasons, such as limited access to pet care services limited plaltorrns for
stray animals to be adopted, and a lack of lacililies that accept pets. Access
to pet care services is one of the biggest challenges to caring for pets in
the Philippines especially in rural areas. Based on a Royal Canine (2019)
survey on proper pet ownership in the Philippines, Only 2096 of local pet o\
vners take their animals to the vet at least once a year. so pet
medicalizalion is still comparatively low. The other 80% of pet owners
would only bring their animals in when they were ill or needed care.
The limited platforms for stray animals present anoltier difficulty. The
Philippines currenlly has 12 million sbay animals, according to PAWS
The cuLural perspective on stray animals is also a factor that adds up to
stray animals. In the Philippines, stray animals are considered unclean,
dangerous. and unwanted. The cycle of animal abuse and neglect is
sustained by this mentality. making it challenging for stray animals to find
homes.
some individuals believe that an animal can simply be abandoned when it is
no longer wanted, discouraging individuals from setting up a plaltorrn for sbay
animals. These make 4 more difficult for stray animals to find homes
because they prevent people from adopting them and from providing a
plaltorrn for them. The researchers collected information from pet owners,
pet silters, and pet adopters to team more about the availability of pet care
services, the challenges associated with providing for pets' basic
requirements and the problem of stray animals. The researchers' dala
showed that many people had trouble providing for their pets' heaths.
feeding them properly, and maintaining their cleanliness. The researchers
created a smartphone application that may offer pet care services, including
pet boarding, pet sitting, and in-home pet grooming so that pet lovers can
have more freedom with their pets. It is easily accessible to the general
public. Pet owners won't struggle to find somebody to provide services for
their animals because of these services. This research aims to solve the
problem of pet owners. pet sitters and stray animals by studying and
implementing pet care services that the pet industry lacks.

Conceptual Framework
The researchers created a frame\vork that will portray Itie study's
conceptu alization, focusin g on pet care and Itie connection of elements Itiat
influence the factors of neglected pet care and abandonment. The main
factors the main issue are difficulties in pet care and health in
general people finding it difficult to to ok after their pet's cleanliness, being
anxious about leaving their p ets alone at home. and the numb er of stray
anim als in the Philippines. It conne cts to Itie researcher's study of the ne eds
and struggles of most pet o\vners in pet services, Itie factors of having a pet
in their lives, the aspe cts and motivation of p et o\vners before a dopting or
gelding a new pet, and what the best pet care services that can be offered
for the pet owners. II concludes by providin g a platform for easy and
accessible
pet care services and a platform that focuses on the adoplion of stray
animals.
The research will address this problem by creating a
muLifunctional mobile application for pet care and adoption. This output
aims to provide easy access to pet care services and adoption.

Statement of Purpose

The objectives of this research are to accomplish and obtain the

following goals:
1. boost the awareness of the rising amount of stray animak scattered
around the city;
2. assist pet owners in meeting their needs when they are unable to care
for their animals for a while;
3. provide care and services to stray animals pets, and pet owners: and
4. determine the factors that influence having a pet in a person s life.

DESIGN AND METHODS

The researchers utilized the descriptive developmental method.

The descriptive developmental method looks for actual information
regarding current circumstances (Gillaco, 2014) and primarily describes
analyzes, and interprets existing data. (Beb n.d.) defined developmental
method as a body of research literature that connects directly to
instructional development; in other words. an output will be made after
conducting the research. Through this method, the study will go through a
systematic process and analyze all the data to apply all necessary
features planned by the researchers. This approach helps the
researchers explore the insights of the target population and identify what
features must be included in the planned oulgut.
The researchers will conduct an online survey using Google Forms
to collect dala on Filipino pet owners' insights regarding pet care services
and adoption. The data gathered will be analyzed to understand better
people's motivations regarding pet care services and adoption.
For the researchers to understand the data gathered, the thematic
analysis method will be used to identify the correlation between the target
audience's data. According to (Castleberry and Nolen 2018), 4 slates
that thematic analysis is a method of "identifying, analyzing and reporting
patterns (themes) within data. In this strategy. most data collection
processes rely on open-ended survey responses. Qualitative analysis
often employs it since it can generally ans\ver research questions and
subjects. According to this analytic technique. the researchers may
readily uncover trends among persons interested in using pet care
services and adopting pets on a mobile application. This data analysis
approach is significant for the researchers' gual4ative study since it may
aid them in studying and discovering the link between the motivations of
pet owners in using a pet service application and the factors of a pet in
people's daily lives.

RESULTS & DISCUSSION

The results of this study provide a detailed understanding of the

insights and faced by pet o\vners, pet sitters. and adopters
concerning pet care and adoption services. The researchers gathered data
from 100 respondents using an online survey to explore factors such as
struggles with pet care. motivations for adopting pets, and the accessibility of
pet services.
The findings reveal that cleaning is the most challenging aspect of pet
care. with 7896 of respondents highlighting it as a primary struggle, followed
by health (6796) and feeding (469a). Additionally when running errands most
pet owners (5496) prefer leaving Itieir pets at home with food and water,
while 3296 rely on others to care for them.
Regarding pet adoption, 479a of respondents reported having adopted
their pets and a significant majority /596) expressed interest in adopting pets
if given the chance, citing reasons such as stress relief. companionship. and
household joy. However, 7296 of respondents were unaware of any local pet
adoption platforms, indicating a gap in the accessibility and awareness of
adoption services.
Regarding desired pet care services. the survey highlighted in-house
pet grooming /496) as Itie most preferred service foIIo\ve d by pet daycare
(6596) and pet boarding (609+). Notably, 56% of respondents indicated that
pet care services were accessible in their area but 4496 reported limited
Furthermore, 95% of participants expressed strong interest in a
mobile application that could provide these services
These insults underscore Itie need for an integrated platform like the
proposed "Boop" application, which could streamline access to pet care
services and promote pet adoption, addressing the challenges identified in
the study. This data will serve as the foundation for designing and
implementing a user-friendly solution tailore d to meet the needs of pet
owners and advocates.

The application should also expand its services to indude veterinary
consultations, behavioral training. and pet walking, addressing a broader
range of pet care needs. Partnerships with local businesses, pet shelters, and
veterinary clinics will ensure the availability of these services, even in remde
areas. For long-term success. the app should incorporate features such as
user reviews and feedback to continuously improve its offerings. Scalability
should also be planned by designing the application to accommodate future
growth, such as expanding to other regions or introducing advanced features
like Al-based pet health monitoring.
Finally, community engagement will play a significant role in the
success of "Boop." Programs can be established to encourage pet advocates
and volunteers to participate as service providers, such as pet sitters and
groomers. Incentives like discounts or loyalty rewards can be created to
promote regular use of the platform. By implementing Itiese strategies. the
"Boop" application can effectively address the challenges identified in Itie
improving pet care accessibility and encouraging adoption to create a
meaningful impact on pet welfare in the Philippines.
