Some Tricks
List of Linkers or Linking words and their uses-
01. ঘটনার ক্রম বা ধারাবাহিকতা ববাঝাতত বযবহৃত Linking word সমূি:
(i) first, firstly, at first, in the first place, at the
beginning, in the beginning etc.
Example: I will be very busy today. At first, I have to go
(ii) second, secondly, third, thirdly, fourth,
to the bank to draw some money. Then, I will pay the
fourthly, fifth, fifthly etc.
school fees. After that, I need to go to the market to buy
(iii) in between, in the middle of etc.
some apples. Finally, I will meet my friends.
(iv) next, afterwards, after that, then etc.

02. অহতহরক্ত তথ্য প্রদান করতত বযবহৃত Linking word সমূি: and, both .......and, or, either .........or, neither...........nor,
as well as, too, likewise, also, so on, apart from, similarly, again,
(i) And (এবং, ও) Example: it is good for health both physically and
mentally. [Ctg.B’24; JB, CB’19]
(ii) Either ............ or (হয় এটি ____নয় Example: Either you or your brother has done this.
অপরটি, হয় এই জন ____ নয় অপর জন):
(iii) Neither ........ nor (এটিও নয় ___ ওটিও Example: Neither Ruma nor Rina will help you.
নয়; এই জনও নয় ___ ওইজনও নয়):
(iv) Both ........... and (উভয়ই) Example: Both Kamal and Kashem speak English well.
(v) Or (অথবা, ট ংবা, বা) Example: I will take milk or tea. [Din.B’19]
(vi) As well as (এবং সেই োথথ): Example: Rani as well as her sister will visit us.
(vii) Not only.......... but also (স বল এটি নয়........সেটিও):
Example: I am very happy with the new employee. He is
not only sincere but also efficient.

(viii) In addition (অটি ন্তু, এছাড়াও): Example: Abir has a nice watch. In addition, he has a
costly cell phone. [Ctg.B’19, BB’17]
(ix) Besides/Moreover/Furthermore (অটি ন্তু, Example: The man has a big house. Besides / Moreover /
উপরন্তু, তাছাড়া): Furthermore he has a new car.

(x) Apart from (বযতীত, এছাড়া): Example: Apart from many lands, his father has a big business.
(xi) Too (ও): Example: He helps all his brothers. He helps his
neighbours too.
(xii) Similarly (এ ইভাথব): Example: You should respect your parents. Similarly, you
should respect your teachers.

(i) For example/for instance/such as/ Example: Many birds are called birds of prey. For
namely (উদাহরণস্বরূপ) example/for instance/such as/namely, the eagle,
the vulture etc. [DB’20]
(ii) In other words (অন্য থায়) Example: His crazy activities were crossing all limits; in
other words, he was almost mad.

07. পূতবে যা বলা িত়েতে বা করা িত়েতে তার ফলশ্রুহততত যা দাাঁহ়িত়েতে তা প্রকাশ্ করতত বযবহৃত Linking word সমূি:
(i) So/therefore (সুতরাং, অতএব): Example: He has walked five miles. So/therefore he
seems to be tired. [MB’24; CB,Din.B’20; SB’17]
(ii) As a result/as a consequence/ Example: He was absent from the class. As a result/as a
consequently/ eventually (ফলস্বরূপ/ ফথল): consequence/consequently/eventually, he could
not bring the homework. [SB’24; BB’19]
(iii) Thus (এরূথপ): Example: Adeeb is very insincere. He does not study at
all. Thus, he wastes his time.

(iv) Naturally (স্বভাবতই): Example: He always gets up late. Naturally he misses his
first class.
08. বকান কাতের উতেশ্য ও ফলাফল বযক্ত করতত বযবহৃত Linking word সমূি: Linkers গুথলা এথক্ষথে দুথিা clause-স েংযুক্ত থর।
(i) Lest (যটদ/নাহথল): Example: He reads seriously lest he might fail.
(ii) So as to (যাথত, বলথত সেথল): Example: I keep the door open; so as to let fresh air enter
into the room.
(iii) So that/in order that/that (যাথত): Example: The man is working hard so that/in order that/that
he can overcome his problem.
(iv) So........ that (এত সয): Example: The old man is so weak that he cannot walk.
(v) As much as (এত সবটি পটরমাণ সয): Example: He took milk as much as he could.
(vi) As many as (এত সবটি েংখ্য সয): Example: He ate as many mangoes as he could.
09. শ্তে আতরাপ করতত বযবহৃত Linking word সমূি: এথক্ষথে Linking word গুথলা দুটি clause স েংযুক্ত থর।
If (যটদ): Example: If you want, I shall help you. [RB,Ctg.B’20;
BB’17]
Or/otherwise (নথচৎ, নতু বা): Example: Eat or/otherwise go away, do or die.
Unless (যটদ না): Example: You will fail unless you are sincere. [MB’24;
CB’20; SB’17]
Until/till (পযেন্ত, না পযেন্ত): Example: Wait here till/until I come back.
Provided/Provided that/Providing that (যটদ): Example: The plane will take off provided/provided
that/providing that the weather is fine.
In case (যটদ- িতে সবাঝাথত): Example: In case you fail to find my house, call me.
As long as (যতক্ষণ পযেন্ত): Example: Allah will be with us as long as our purpose is honest.
Supposing that (মথন থর): Example: Supposing that you will come. I shall wait for you.
Once (যটদ এ বার): Example: Once you make a promise, you should not break it.
Had (যটদ- িতে সবাঝাথত): Example: Had you wanted, I would have helped you.
Were (যটদ- িতে সবাঝাথত): Example: Were I a king, I would help the poor.
Should (যটদ-িতে সবাঝাথত): Example: Should you not help him, the consequence
would be different.

10. সম়ে ও স্থান হনতদেশ্ করতত বযবহৃত Linking word সমূহ:
At that time (সে েময়): Example: He took admission in 1995. At that time, he was
18 years old.
Where (সযখ্াথন): Example: Dhaka is the city where he was born.
There (সেখ্াথন): Example: I went to Chittagong. There lives his father.
As (যখ্ন....তখ্ন): Example: As he grew older, he became interested in politics.
When ( খ্ন): Example: I don't know when the train will arrive. [JB,
Din.B’24; JB’17]
While (যখ্ন): Example: I was reading while the telephone rang.
Before (আথে): Example: The bell had rung before the teacher entered the
classroom.
After (পথর): Example: The bell rang after the teacher had entered the
classroom.
Since: (যখে বেনক): Example: It is quite a long time since we met.
As soon as (োথথ োথথ, সযইমাে, সেইমাে): Example: As soon as the teacher entered the classroom,
the students stood up.
Sometimes (মাথঝ মাথঝ): Example: Sometimes, my uncle visits our house.
At present/presently (বতেমাথন): Example: At present/presently, he works in a firm.
Now (এখ্ন): Example: I am watching TV now.
Then (তখ্ন): Example: I wake up at 5.30 am. Then I go for morning walk.
Recently (েম্প্রটত): Example: Recently he visited a few European countries.
Once first time (একবার…প্রেমবার): Example: My friends have been to Paris at least once. I am
going there next summer for the first time.
No sooner had .....than (হথত না হথতই): Example: No sooner had the thief seen the police than he
fled away.
Hardly had ........ when (হথত না হথতই): Example: Hardly had he reached the station when the train left.
Scarcely had ........ when (হথত না হথতই): Example: Scarcely had the teacher entered the classroom
when the students stood up.
Afterwards (তৎপরবতেীথত): Example: He fell ill and was admitted to hospital.
Afterwards he died.
11. বকান উপসংিার বা সারসংতেপ প্রকাশ্ করতত বযবহৃত Linking words সমূি: in brief, in short, to sum up, to
summarize, on the whole, above all, in all/in total etc.
In brief (েংথক্ষথপ): Example: He established a school in his village. He also
set up a hospital. In brief he is a kind hearted man.
In short (েংথক্ষথপ): Example: He is studious, sincere and obedient. In short,
he is brilliant.
To sum up/to summarise (েংথক্ষথপ): Example: He went to Europe during the last summer
vacation. He visited London, France, Italy. To
sum up / to summarise, it was a wonderful trip.
On the whole (সমাথির ওপর): Example: Our principal likes all the students. He behaves
well with everybody. On the whole he is a
gentle man.
Above all (েথবোপটর): Example: He is a good teacher and helpful to everybody.
Above all he is a good man.
In all/in total (সমাি): Example: In all/in total there are seven thousand people in
our village.

12. বকাতনা কাতের ধরন বা কােহট কীভাতব করা ি়ে তা হনতদেশ্ করতত বযবহৃত Linking words সমূি:
As if / As though (সযন): Example: He speaks as if/as though he were an intellectual.
How (সয িরথন, সযভাথব): Example: This is the way how he talks.
However (বযভানব): Example: You can take however you like. [SB, RB’20]
As (সযমন): Example: Work as I suggest you. [DB,CB’24;SB’20]
Like (মত): Example: She can sing like her sister does. [RB, BB’24]
Such ...........as/that (এমন......সয): Example: Our country needs such leaders as/that are patriots.
As it were (সযমন): Example: The camel is as it were the ship of the desert.
13. একই সমত়ে সংঘহটত দুহট ঘটনা প্রকাশ্ করার েন্য বযবহৃত Linking word সমূি:
At the same time (এ ই েমথয়): Example: He was eating and talking to his friend at the
same time. [DB’20]
At that time (সে েমথয়): Example: When you rang me, at that time I was reading.
As (যখ্ন): Example: As I was going home, I met a mad man.
Meanwhile (ইথতামথিয): Example: I entered the wedding ceremony. Meanwhile
almost all the guests left the hall.
