Fischer Random Starting Position:

Two pots for drawing of position:

- Pot one contains letters B C D E F G – a letter is picked from this pot, and the
King will be placed on the first rank of the corresponding letter
- Pot two contains a letter corresponding to each power piece: Q R R B B N N
o If the king is drawn letter B or G, a rook is placed immediately on the
single square adjacent to it.
o Pieces will otherwise be drawn from the pot and placed on the
board, in the remaining available order, a-to-h files.
o We must keep the two following restrictions:
 the king must be placed originally between the two rooks,
though necessarily adjacent to them.
 Bishops must start on opposite colours

Found this alternative online:

o Decide which tile the light square bishop will go to using only the four
pips on the six sided die because there are only four light squares
available on the first rank, if the die rolls 5 or 6, try again.
o Do the same for the dark square bishop.
o Now we have six vacant squares left. In any order, roll the die and
place the queen and the knight pair using from all six pips to five pips
and then four pips.
o Now we have the last three vacant squares left. And there’s no need
to roll the die for the king and the rook pair, just place them in the
order of “Rook king rook” because the king has to be in between the
rooks.
Fischer Random Tournament Rules & Guidelines:

1 – Players find the pairings, sit at the assigned board and colour.

2 – Assignment of the position. Pawns will be set up per standard chess, on the
2nd and 7th ranks. Power pieces will be adjacent to the board. A drawing of lots
prior to each round will take place, in front of the players who will be sitting at
their board, to announce that round’s position. It will be called out and placed on
a demo board for display. All players should fill in the 1st and 8th ranks of their
board accordingly.

3 – Once the set up is completed, players will be allowed 60 seconds to look at the
fresh position in front of them. At this stage, communication, consultation, note-
taking or electronic devices are not permitted. White’s clock will start after this 60
second grace period.

Castling:
- Neither King or Rook can have moved prior for this to be possible.
- The King must not be in check nor pass through check on any of the
squared between it and it’s landing square.
- The position after castling, will result in:
o King-side or h-side: King on the g1 / g8 square; Rook on the f1 / f8
square
o Queen-side or a-side: King on c1 / c8 square; Rook on d1 / d8 square

All other rules of conventional chess apply
