Glossary Of Terms Used In Solo App

“Changes” (There are multiple uses of this term)

1. A sequence of chord changes that will often include notes other than those belonging to the diatonic key. (This is more
of a jazz musician’s definition)

2. Any sequence of chords one after the other. (This is a broader definition)

“Chord scale”

Any chord plus all of its extensions, presented in a linear, single note manner where all of the notes are rearranged from the root
note, ascending or descending in alphabetical order.

“Coltrane Patterns”

The intervallic formula often used by John Coltrane on tunes like Giant Steps. The pattern on major and dominant chords being
1, 2, 3, 5 and the pattern on minor chords, 1, b3, 4, 5.

“Harmonic Device”

Any chord, scale or arpeggio.

“Holdsworthy Hands”

The stretch of the G.O.A.T

“Melodic Structures”

A short series of repeated intervals creating a melody that is mapped over each chord in a chord sequence. Melodic structures
usually combine both chord tones and extensions. (For example, the melodic structure 5, 6, 7, 2 would map onto a Major 7
chord as 5, 6, 7, 2 and a Dominant 7th chord as 5, 6, b7, 2.)

“Playing over/through chord changes”

Making the sound of each chord in a progression clear in your single note/lead playing. ‘You could really hear the changes in his
solo!’

“Voice leading”

Connecting a melody, or phrase as smoothly as possible from one chord to the next. This normally means moving the least
intervallic distance from the last note played over the current chord to the first note played over the new chord.
