Foundation Engineering Problem Set 4

The document outlines a problem set for a foundation engineering course, focusing on the analysis of concrete piles in various soil conditions. It includes calculations for allowable loads on piles, maximum load on a pile group, and ultimate bearing capacities, requiring the application of specific methods such as the λ method and Meyerhof’s method. The problems involve parameters like pile dimensions, soil properties, safety factors, and conditions affecting load-bearing capacities.

CVE 133- FOUNDATION ENGINEERING

PROBLEM SET #4

1. A concrete pile 15.24 m long, having a cross section of 406 mm x 406 mm is fully
embedded in a saturated clay layer for which ɣsat = 19.02 kN/m3, Ø = 0, cu = 76.67
kN/m2.Determine the allowable load that the pile could carry. (Let FS = 3.) Using the λ
method for estimating the skin friction and Meyerhof’s method for the point load
estimation.

2. A 3 x 5 pile group consisting of 15 concrete piles of 400 mm diameter and 12 m in

length. What would be the maximum load that can be allowed on the mat with a safety
factor of 3? The piles have a center – to – center spacing of 1200 mm.

3. A precast concrete pile 17 m. long has a diameter of 450 mm. The pile is driven through
layers of clay and a dense compact sand with the upper layer which is clay having a
thickness of 5 m. and a unit weight of 16 kN/m3, Water table is at the bottom of the clay
layer. Saturated unit weight of sand is 19 kN/m3, with a bearing factor Nq = 72 and a
lateral pressure factor for compression Khc =1.24. Angle of friction of the concrete pile is
28֯. Neglect skin friction on the clay layer.

a. Compute the ultimate bearing capacity of the pile.

b. Compute the ultimate frictional resistance of the pile.

c. Compute the allowable uplift capacity of the pile if Kht = 0.90 for driven pile in
tension. Unit weight of concrete is 24 kN/m3. Use the factor of safety of 2.5.
