Personal statement
I have chosen to potentially pursue MA in International Development (online) at the University of Edinburgh, I have selected this course because I have been assuming social accountability and
social policy programming for the past "ve years including a joint program on local governance JPLG program the largest development program in Somalia. I am very passionate to engage local
governance, migration and displacement, dynamics of development in Africa, and social accountability in our country since I believe this course will equip me with new development thinking

skills that are essential for our nation-building process. Further to this, I did a Bachelor of Public Administration which gave me insights into the very merits of the decentralization and
democratization system in con"dence building and reduction of bad governance and leadership. However, I hope MA in international development will shape my understanding of what is
needed to establish a bottom-up-based democratization system tailored to a fragile context. I intend to put the new skills and knowledge I will have acquired from my education in the UK to good
use in Somalia. I will build on my past gains and further pursue my ambitions to join the political arena by taking advantage of the Somali democratization process which is in the making at the
moment. I will aim, "rst and foremost, to mobilize youth, women and civil society constituencies across Somalia, therefore, establishing political platforms and pressure groups that advance
inclusive politics and mainstreaming of women, youth, and minority rights in the development and the political processes at all levels.
Taking cognizance of this, I will join forces with civil society and evolve political platforms/parties to shape a better future for all Somalis. I will vie for leadership positions at legislative and
executive fronts to in#uence policy-making and inclusion of youth, women, and minorities in decision-making processes at the local, state, and federal levels while also promoting principles of
democratic governance, rule of law, and peaceful co-existence of societies in Somalia.
