ABSTRACT

Resume building using LaTeX offers a professional, structured, and highly customizable approach to
creating resumes, particularly suited for individuals in academia, research, engineering, and technical
fields. Unlike traditional word processors, LaTeX allows users to separate content from formatting,
enabling precise control over layout, typography, and consistency. This ensures that resumes
maintain a clean and polished appearance regardless of content complexity. With a variety of LaTeX
templates and packages available, users can easily create modern and visually appealing resumes that
emphasize clarity and professionalism. Furthermore, LaTeX's ability to handle multilingual content,
mathematical notation, and citation integration makes it an ideal tool for advanced resume
customization. While it has a steeper learning curve, the benefits of using LaTeX for resume building
include improved formatting reliability, print-quality output, and easier version control, especially
valuable in academic or research-oriented job applications.

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Introduction to LaTeX

LaTeX, which is pronounced «Lah-tech» or «Lay-tech» (to rhyme with «blech» or «Bertolt Brecht»), is a
document preparation system for high-quality typesetting. It is most often used for medium-to-large technical
or scientific documents but it can be used for almost any form of publishing.

1.1.1 LaTeX Features

 Latex is a markup language and free license software. It includes a set of built-in commands.
 It is a mode of mathematical and special symbols.
 LaTeX is generally distributed along with plain TEX, i.e., it provides a set of macros for TEX to interpret.
The other macros for TEX are Plain TEX, GNU Texinfo, etc.
 LaTeX is not compatible with the GNU (General Public License). It is available on most of the operating
systems like UNIX, BSD, Linux, Windows, DOS, etc.

1.1.2 Installation of Latex

 Search for MiKTeX in any browser.

 As the page opens, click on MiKTeX.org and select the 'Download' option given at the top.
 Now, click on the 'All downloads' option. You will see the window appear like the image shown below:
 Select the 'Net Installer' and choose the 64 or 32-bit according to your system configuration and click on the
download option. The download will start.
 After that, close the browser. The MiKTeX download is a two-step process in this.
 In first step, with the help of Net Installer, we download the files, and in the second step, we install these
downloaded files.
 Now, open this file and accept the conditions.
 Select the option 'Download MiKTeX.' Click on Next and then select 'Complete MiKTeX' and again click
next.
 Then select the FTP as a download source. Click on the browse option, and under downloads category,
make a new folder by any name and click 'OK' and then click on next. You can also select any other folder
as per your requirements.

DEPT OF ISE,DBIT 2024-2025 1

 Click on the 'Start' option, and the downloading process will start, which will take a while. Wait for the
process to download. The downloading dialogue box will look like the image shown below:
 After this, again, go to the MiKTeX and then select 'Install MiKTeX.' It will still take some time, and now,
the process is complete.

1.2 Latex Editors

Latex Editors are applications to write the Latex code and allow a user to edit and publish the paper in Latex.
Below are some commonly used Latex Editors:
 Texmaker
 TeXnicCentre
 LyX
 Texstudio
 TeXworks

The online Latex editors are:

 Papeeria
 Authorea
 Overleaf

Some of the editors used for the Linux are:

 Gummi
 TeXpen
 Kile

1.3 Latex Symbols

 \ - It is called backslash, used as the starting command. The line following it gets printed.
 {} - It is called curly brackets, which is used to group and separate commands from its surroundings and
must appear in pairs.
 \\ - terminates a line.
 \\* - It also terminates the line, but disallows the page break.
 [] - It is used to write the optional parameters that can be passed to a command to change its behavior.
 % - the Latex ignores the rest of the line or commands after %Z

1.4 Latex Lists

DEPT OF ISE,DBIT 2024-2025 3

RESUME BUILDING USING LATEX BCSL456D

The example for the lists is shown below:

 \begin{enumerate}

 \item first point

 \item second point

 \begin{itemize}

 \item first sub-point

 \item second sub-point

 \end{itemize}

 \item third point

 \end{enumerate}

The spacing commands, which can be used here, are mentioned below:

 \itemsep: used for extra vertical spaces between the items

 \rightmargin: horizontal distance between the right margin and the lists of the environment
 \leftmargin: horizontal distance between the left margin and the lists of the environment
 \topsep: extra vertical spaces at the top of the list
 \labelsep: the separation between the first line of an item and the end of the box containing a label.
 \labelwidth: the normal width of the box, which contains the label
 \parsep: the vertical spaces between the paragraphs within the items.

DEPT OF ISE,DBIT 2024-2025 4

RESUME BUILDING USING LATEX BCSL456D

 \makelabel{label}: used to generate the label, printed by the \item command

1.5 Latex Type Size

The other commands commonly used are given below, which will be implemented further in this project.

 flushright and flushleft: These commands are written as \begin{flushright} or \begin{flushleft}. These
are used for aligning the text to the right and left of the document.
 \noindent: If you want to start any paragraph without an indent or to continue the paragraph without any
interruption, this command is used

The standard supported for the weights and width for the font series are listed in the table below:
 sb- Semi Bold
 ub- Ultra Bold
 b- Bold
 eb- Extra Bold
 ul- Ultra Light

1.6 Latex Images

The images are used to enhance the information in a document or in any file. In most of the scientific
documents, pictures are essential. In Latex, you can enlarge, shrink, rotate, and can set the reference of the
image in your document.

 Including the graphicx package. The command will be written as \usepackage{graphicx}.

DEPT OF ISE,DBIT 2024-2025 5

RESUME BUILDING USING LATEX BCSL456D

 You need to download the particular image from the browser and save that image in the same folder where
the Latex files are present. Otherwise, Latex cannot access those images. Mention the same in the code or
program that you have mentioned while saving that particular image.

CHAPTER 2
SYSTEM REQUIREMENT & SPECIFICATIONS

2.1 Hardware Requirements

LaTeX itself is a lightweight typesetting system, so its hardware requirements are minimal. It can run
efficiently on most modern computers. However, the requirements may vary slightly depending on the LaTeX
distribution and editor you choose.

Minimum Hardware Requirements:

 Processor: 1 GHz or faster (single-core)

 RAM: 1 GB
 Storage: Around 1–3 GB of free disk space (depending on the distribution; full TeX Live install can take
~4–6 GB)
 Display: 1024×768 resolution or higher
 Processor: Dual-core 2 GHz or better
 RAM: 4 GB or more (especially for compiling large documents or using editors like Overleaf offline,
TeXstudio, or VS Code)

2.2 Software Requirements

To use LaTeX effectively, you need a combination of a LaTeX distribution (which includes the compiler and
necessary packages) and a text editor or integrated development environment (IDE) to write and compile
your .tex files.

2.2.1 LaTeX Distribution (Compiler Backend)

This is the core component that compiles .tex files into PDF or other formats.
 MiKTeX (Windows, also available for macOS and Linux) – beginner-friendly

2.2.2 Text Editor / LaTeX IDE

Used to write LaTeX code and compile documents. Choose based on preference and platform.
 TeXstudio – Open-source, cross-platform, feature-rich

2.2.3 Optional Tools

DEPT OF ISE, DBIT 2024-25 7

RESUME BUILDING USING LATEX BCSL456D

 PDF Reader: To view compiled output (e.g., Adobe Acrobat Reader, SumatraPDF)

 Bibliography Tools: BibTeX, Biber for citation management

 Graphics Tools: TikZ, PGFPlots for creating figures, or external tools like Inkscape

A working LaTeX environment generally needs both a distribution and an editor. Many editors (like
TeXstudio) can simplify setup by managing the compilation process for you.
