Output Devices

Output devices are instruments that produce data from a computer for human or computer use, with monitors and printers being the most common types. Monitors come in various types such as CRT, LCD, and OLED, with image quality determined by pixel density and resolution. Printers are categorized into impact and non-impact types, with impact printers including dot-matrix, line, and daisy-wheel printers, each having unique features and drawbacks.

Output Devices

Q. What is an Output Device?

A. Output devices are instruments that produce data from the computer in a form that can be used by a
human or another computer.

Q. Which is the most common output Device?

A. After the monitor, the printer is the most commonly use of the device.
Monitor
Monitor- A device that display text and images generated by the computer.

Types of displays

1) CRT (Cathode Ray Tube)

2) LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)
3) OED (Organic Light Emitting Diode)
Output Devices
A pixel- a minute area of illumination on a display screen, one of many from which an image is composed.

Nb- Every screen/ display is made up of pixels. There are thousand of those tiny dots called pixels that make up you
phone display and television displays.
The number of pixels that is found on a display is called the resolution.

The higher the number of pixels or dots you have making up an image the better / clearer the image will look.
Therefore, for a given screen size, the higher the resolution of the screen display the better the image quality
displayed.
Output Devices
The higher the number of pixels or dots you have making up an image the better / clearer the image will look.
Therefore, If two displays are of the same size the one with the higher resolution will display better image quality.

Resolution: 560 * 720 Resolution: 1920 * 1080

Output Devices
Because device screens comes in a wide variety of sizes it may be challenging to determine which screen will display
better quality of they are of different size.
That’s where we use the term “pixel density” to tell us exactly which display will produce better/clearer images if
both displays are of different size.

Pixel Density is usually measured in PPI (Pixels Per Inch), which refers to the number of pixels present per inch on the
display.
Output Devices
Measuring the size of monitor.
The size of a monitor is measured diagonally.

Q. What is the size of your T.V. an computer monitor at home??

Monitor
Monitor- A device that display text and images generated by the computer.

Types of displays

1) CRT (Cathode Ray Tube)

2) LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)
3) OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode)
CRT (Cathode Ray Tube)

Features

• Large/ Bulky
• Not portable
• Relatively cheap
• High quality display
• Wide viewing angle
LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)

Features

• Comes in a variety of sizes

• Flat
• Portable
• High Quality Display
• Relative Expensive
• Smaller viewing angle
OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode)
a light-emitting diode containing thin flexible sheets of an organic electroluminescent material, used mainly in digital display screens.

Features

• Comes in a variety of sizes

• Flat
• Portable
• High Quality Display
• Very Expensive
• Consumes Less energy than the other type of displays
• Smaller viewing angle
Printers
Q. What is a Printer?
A. The printer is a device that takes information on your computer screen and transfer it to a paper or a
hard copy.

There are two basic classes of printers

Impact and none impact.
Impact Printers
Impact printers
Impact printers use a print-head containing a number of mental pins which strike an
inked ribbon place between the print-head and the paper.

The general features of impact printers are:

• They create characters by striking the paper.
• The print on most types of paper.
• Multiple [common] copies may be printed at once.

The disadvantages of impact printers are:

• some users find them noisy
• the speed is relatively slow
• they do not print on transparencies [documents printed on clear plastic film]
Impact Printers
Common Types of Impact Printers

• Dot-Matrix Printer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_vXA058EDY

A Dot Matrix Printer is the oldest type of printer and one of the good examples of computer printer that
prints by direct impact of an ink-soaked cloth ribbon against the paper. Much like the print mechanism of
a typewriter, the printer head moves in an up and down motion or runs back and forth on the paper.

Features

• Prints are formed using dots

• Cheap
• The maintenance cost is low as compared to other printers
• the output is not high resolution
• Noisy
Impact Printers
Line Printers
A line printer is an impact printer which makes use of a continuous feed of paper and
prints one line of text at a time. Although they have been replaced in most instances by
high-speed laser printers, they are still used in some business as they are low cost and
have the ability to print on multi-part forms.

A line printer is also known as a bar printer.

Features
• Prints high speeds. They can Print 300 to 3000 Lines per Minute.
• Prints one line at a time
• Low operational cost
• noisy
Impact Printers
• Daisy Wheel Printers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIDZYxevW6Q

A daisy-wheel printer works on the same principle as a ball-head typewriter. The daisy
wheel is a disk made of plastic or metal on which characters stand out in relief along the
outer edge. To print a character, the printer rotates the disk until the desired letter is
facing the paper. Then a hammer strikes the disk, forcing the character to hit an ink
ribbon, leaving an impression of the character on the paper. You can change the daisy
wheel to print different fonts.

Features

• Cannot print Graphics

• Slow
• Noisy
• daisy-wheel printers have become obsolete.
