BUSINESS PROCESS MAPS (Mapping

and Tools)

UmarYahya2025-IUIU

BUSINESS PROCESS MAPPING & TOOLS

 Process Mapping
 Process Mapping is the visual display of the steps within a business
process (from start to finish)
 The process map is therefore a tool that graphically shows the
inputs, actions and outputs of a process in a clear, step-by-step map
of the process.
 A process map outlines the individual steps within a process,
identifying task owners and detailing expected timelines.
 The major components of a process map include the inputs,
outputs and the steps in the process.
 A good process map should illustrate the flow of the work and the
interaction with the organization.
 It should make use of common language (symbols) that are easily
understood by everyone.

BUSINESS PROCESS MAPPING & TOOLS

 BP Statistical Tools
1) Minitab: Considered the “de facto” standard tool for
process improvement projects. It can perform lots of six
sigma tasks with just a few clicks.
2) Microsoft Excel: a must-have skill
3) Python Programming: A very popular programming
language that has several libraries for stats (e.g. NumPy,
SciPy).
o You could write your Python code in Google Colab, a
free cloud based notebook environment.
o Colab makes it easy to share code and no installation is
required.

BUSINESS PROCESS MAPPING & TOOLS

 Business Process Modelling
 A business process model is a graphical representation of a
business process or workflow and its related sub-processes.
 Process modelling generates comprehensive, quantitative
activity diagrams and flowcharts .
 A single process model can contain a wealth of workflow data,
allowing team members to analyse a workflow from multiple
perspectives.
 Business analysts often use business process modelling to zero in
on the following workflow components in particular:-
 Control flow = order of execution of steps within a process
 Organisation = captures who is involved and how they interact?
 Time = how long a process takes (and its steps)
 Case = offer a general view of how a workflow typically plays out

BUSINESS PROCESS MAPPING & TOOLS

 Business Process Modelling: Benefits
 Access and utilize quantitative process data. Without a process
model, teams are limited to discussing and analysing workflows
in qualitative and subjective terms.
 Streamline and accelerate process automation. Before a process
can be automated, an organization needs a clear understanding
of how that process plays out in reality, including the business
logic underpinning each decision point.
 Keep operation costs down. Process models provide
organizations with an easy way to identify opportunities to
optimize existing processes.
o Process modelling therefore, forms a cornerstone of any
automation effort or business process management initiative in
an enterprise.

BUSINESS PROCESS MAPPING & TOOLS

 Business Process Modelling: 9 Common Techniques
1) Gantt Charts
2) Flow Charts
3) Data Flow Diagrams
4) Business Process Modelling Notation
5) Unified Modelling Language Diagrams
6) Functional Flow Block Diagrams
7) Integrated Definition for Function Modelling
8) Petri Nets and Coloured Petri Nets
9) Role Interaction Diagrams (i.e Sequence Diagrams and
Collaboration Diagrams)
Revision Task: Browse the Internet and other resources and
establish how each of the 9 techniques is used.
