a) Define density. Give the relationship between SI and CGS unit of density. (3)
b) A car starting from rest acquires a velocity 180 m/s in 0.05h. Find the acceleration. (3)
c) When a shot is fired from a gun, the gun gets recoiled. Explain. (2)
d) Give two advantages of an aneroid barometer over a simple barometer. (2)

a) Define Archimedes Principle. (2)
b) A body of mass 3.5 kg displaces 1000 cm³ of water when fully immersed inside it. Calculate
i) the volume of the body.
ii) the upthrust on body.
iii) apparent weight of body in water. (3)
c) Why does a glass vessel break when it falls on a hard floor, but it does not break when it falls on a
carpet? (3)
d) Give two differences between mass and weight. (2)

a) State the laws of liquid pressure. (3 points) (3)
b) What do you understand by the term relative density of a substance? Give its unit. (3)
c) A ball is thrown vertically upwards. It goes to a height 20 m and then returns to the ground. Taking
acceleration due to gravity g to be 10 m/s². Find
a) initial velocity of the ball.
b) final velocity of the ball on reaching the ground.
c) the total time of the journey of the ball. (4)

Question 5.
a) Describe the working of a hydraulic jack. (3)
b) The figure represents the displacement time sketch of motion of two cars A and B. Find
i) The distance by which the car B was initially ahead of car A.
ii) the velocities of car A and car B.
iii) the time in which car A catches car B.
iv)the distance from start when car A will catch the car B.
c) A bunch of feathers and a stone of the same mass are released simultaneously in air. Which would fall
faster and why? How will your observation be different if they are released simultaneously in vacuum?

a) A solid weighs 1.5 kgf in air and 0.9 kgf in a liquid of density 1.2 × 10³ kg/ m³. Calculate R.D of the solid

c) Name and state the action and reaction in the following cases :- (4)

a) A piece of stone of mass 15.1g is first immersed in a liquid and it weighs 10.9 gf. Then on immersing
the piece of stone in water, it weighs 9.7 gf. Calculate (4)
i) the weight of the piece of stone in air.
ii) the volume of the piece of stone.
iii) the relative density of stone.
iv ) the relative density of the liquid.
b) The diagram shows a device which makes use of the principle of transmission of pressure.
i) Name the part labelled by the letters X and Y.
ii) Describe what happens to the valves A and B and to the quantity of water in the two cylinders when
the lever arm is moved down.
iii) Give reason for what happens in valve A and B.
iv) What happens when the release valve is opened?
v) What happens to the valve in cylinder P when the leave arm is moved up?
vi) State one use of the above device.

b) Derive the relationship between the C.G.S and S.I unit of force. (3)
c) Why are the walls of a dam made thicker at the bottom? (2)
d) Give two advantages of using mercury as a barometric liquid. (2)
Question 9.
a) A body of volume 100 cm³ weighs 1 kgf in air. Find i) it's weight in water. ii) it's relative density. (3).
b) Distinguish between uniform velocity and variable velocity. (3)
c) The area of pistons in a hydraulic machine are 5 cm² and 625 cm². What force on the smaller piston
will support a load of 1250 N on the larger piston? (3)
d) Give a reason why we do not feel uneasy under the enormous pressure of the atmosphere. (1)

a)A block of wood is floating on water with its dimensions 50 cm× 50 cm×50 cm inside water. Calculate
the buoyant force. Take g = 9.8N/kg. (3)
b) What force is applied on a piston of area of cross section 2 cm² to obtain a force of 150 N on the
piston of area of cross section 12 cm² in a hydraulic machine? (3)
c) A ball is dropped from the top of a building and reaches the ground 2.5 seconds later. How high is the
building? ( Take g = 9.8 m/s²). (3)
d) How does density depend upon temperature? (1)
