SPEAKING

1. Preserving our heritage

A: Hi, Minh. Have you ever visited a natural heritage site?
B: Absolutely! I went to Ha Long Bay with my parents last summer. That was
amazing! The view was so beautiful and the air was so fresh. And you?
A: I have visited Nha Trang Beach.
B: That sounds wonderful! Your trip must be so meaningful. What do you think about
the important to preserve cultural heritage?
A: Well, our heritage represents our history and culture. It connects people to their
roots and helps them understand their history, their values, and elevates pride.
B: I agree with you. In addition, heritage tourism is a popular field in many parts of
the world. It can also bring economic benefits to the locality through tourism.
A: It’s exciting. Do you suggest any solutions to preserve a form of cultural heritage?
B: Sure. We can promote heritage sites through social media. For example, we can
post about heritage on Facebook or TikTok groups of people who are interested in
history and culture.
A: Great ideas! I think we should plan a trip to another heritage site and share our
photos, stories to promote it.
B: Yeah! Let’s prepare for it now.

2. Education options for school-leavers

A: Hi, Minh! Have you thought about what to do after high school?
B: Oh, hi! Yes, I’m planning to go to university. What about you?
A: I’m thinking of vocational training
B: That sounds interesting. Why did you choose vocational schools?
A: Vocational training helps me get practical skills for a specific job, and it is usually
much shorter than a college or university course. After graduation, I can immediately
start working and earning. That’s very useful. So, what do you think are the benefits
of academic study?
B: Academic study helps us gain deep knowledge about a specific major and
develops many skills like problem-solving, communication. So that learners have
broader options for future careers.
A: Exactly. So, can you describe your learning or working plan after high school?
B: I want to study at the University of Economics to become a marketer, as I am
interested in international economics. I will also find some scholarships to study
abroad. And you?
A: I want to become a chef, so I’ll join a cooking course first and become an
apprentice at a big restaurant.
B: That sounds exciting! I hope we both succeed in our plans.
A: Thank you! Good luck to you, too!
3. Becoming independent
A: Hello! Long time no see! How’s it going?
B: I’m doing pretty fine. I’ve been thinking a lot about independence lately. Do you
think being independent is good or bad?
A: That’s a great question! I think it’s good because independence gives you
freedom. You can make your own choices, manage your time, and live life on your
terms. Plus, it feels amazing to rely on yourself instead of others. But it’s not easy.
Have you thought of what the most important life skills are that you need to be
independent?
B: Definitely money management—budgeting, saving, and paying bills. Also,
cooking and cleaning—basic chores keep your life running smoothly. Oh, and
problem-solving! Things don’t always go as planned, right?
A: Totally! Speaking of which, have you taken any steps to become more
independent yourself?
B: Yes! I started by managing my own expenses—tracking my spending and
saving a little every month. I also learned to cook simple meals instead of always
ordering takeout. How about you?
A: I got a part-time job last month. So I make a to-do list every week by making use
of time management tools like Google Calendar and Notion to make a balance
between working, studying, and personal growth.
B: That’s awesome! I want to be like you one day.
A: Just a matter of time! You’re doing great right now
B: Thanks.

4. Social issues
A: Hey Minh, do you ever feel peer pressure at school? I feel like it's spreading.
B: Ugh, absolutely. For me, it's mostly about grades. When my grades were too low,
I couldn't stop myself from comparing my scores to others. Why do you think that
happens?
A: I think it's because everyone wants recognition, especially at our age but it's tiring
to try to keep up. Moreover, it is even worse when your body has flaws. How do you
think it affects students?
B: It's really serious. Some students lose confidence or feel ashamed of their
appearance. It can even affect their mental health, like stress, anxiety, or even
depression.
A: I agree. My friend stopped eating lunch at school because someone said she was
fat, and she hasn't talked to anyone in class since.
David Bohm: It's terrible. And it's even worse online. Have you ever seen
cyberbullying happen?
A: Sadly, I know. Last month, someone posted a fake photo of a member of my class
with an offensive headline. Have you ever seen it?
B: Yes, so I told our teacher, and we started a "kindness campaign" to call for stop
bullying. It helps a bit.
A: It was kind of you. Cyberbullying can feel just as bad as real-life bullying.
B: Yes, it is really possible. We should hold discussions to prevent these situations
as soon as possible.
A: I like it! We can come up with a plan and implement it together.
B: Sounds good! Okay, let's meet this weekend to discuss the plan further.
A: Sure, I'm looking forward to that
