Group 5 - Disaster Prevention and Mitigation
Disaster - can be defined as any occurrence that cause damage, ecological disruption, loss of
human life, deterioration of health and health services on a scale, sufficient to warrant an
extraordinary response from outside the affected community or area -World Health
Organization (W.H.O.)
Disaster Prevention - Activities taken to prevent natural phenomenon or potential hazard from
having harmful effects on either people or economic assets.
Disaster Mitigation - Lessening the likely effects of emergencies.
Preparedness - is a state of readiness towards something needed to be prepared.
Disaster recovery (DR) - is an organization’s ability to restore access and functionality to IT
infrastructure after a disaster event, whether natural or caused by human action (or error)
CLASSIFICATIONS OF DISASTERS:
1. Natural Disasters - are catastrophic events that occur due to natural processes and can
significantly damage the environment. It is way beyond human control and can have
devastating consequences.
2. Man-Made/Human-Caused Disaster - These disasters result from human actions and
negligence. Disasters can take various yet often require coordinated efforts to mitigate
and respond to their impacts.
PHASES OF DISASTERS:
1. Mitigation - long-term efforts to reduce the vulnerability of communities and minimize
the potential impact of disasters.
2. Preparedness - involves activities and measures taken before a disaster occurs to
reduce its impact and ensure a coordinated response.
3. Response - begins when a disaster occurs and involves immediate actions to save
lives, protect property, and meet basic human needs.
4. Recovery - particularly after large-scale disasters, a separate reconstruction phase
may be identified. This phase focuses on the complete rebuilding of communities and may
involve significant changes in planning and development to reduce future disaster risks.
