CEP-II Advanced Thermofluids

The document outlines a project for an Advanced Thermofluids course focused on the gasification of Thar Coal, aiming to optimize energy use and minimize emissions. Students are required to analyze thermodynamic properties, compare gasification and fixed reactor methods, and propose a layout to reduce emissions. Deliverables include a comprehensive project report detailing the chemical equations, simulation results, and a discussion of findings, with assessment criteria based on a rubric for evaluating student performance.

Problem Statement:
Gasification of Thar Coal with optimal energy and minimal emission via
gas energy solver

Different researchers are applying different technologies to reduce the carbon emission by zero until 2050.
The performance of the gasifier has a direct linkage with its mixture enthalpy. This can be done either through
experiments or simulation. Different commercial software is available to analyze the thermodynamics
properties of gaseous during gasification like CHEMKIN, CANTERIA etc. There are many commercial codes
available on the internet related to gasification of coal. Select a composition of gaseous mixture in accordance
to the composition of Thar Coal and analyze the thermodynamics properties like mixture enthalpy, surface
temperature, entropy and carbon related emission through gas energy solver. The main purpose is to evaluate
the coal through gasification and fixed reactor (normal reactor) with respect to mixture enthalpy and carbon
emission such that carbon emission should be lowered by 30% or more in case of gasification as compared to
fixed reactor (CLO1, 2). Furthermore, analyze a coal gasification layout with implementation of emission
reduction accessories such that carbon, Sulphur and nitrogen related emission would be lowered by manifolds
to achieve the Tier II/III standards (CLO3).

Hints:

The gasification model is PSR, with inlet temperature= (according to theory), radius and height=1 m for
simplification, residence time=student choice (theory), mass flow rate=0.48 kg/sec (can be varied, consult
theory). Solve it through gas energy solver. First do the balanced chemical equation of coal for the fixed bed
reactor and then balanced chemical equation of gaseous (according to the composition of Thar coal) and
compare them with respect to enthalpy and carbon emission. Then used these gaseous mole fraction in
CHEMKIN or CANTERIA and do the simulation and obtain the mixture enthalpy, entropy, surface
temperature and carbon emission.

Deliverables
Project Report and defense/explanation of analysis report in viva.

Report structure and requirements

Each group should submit one project report per group. The report must have

1. An introduction section that clearly has balanced chemical equation of coal through fixed bed
reactor and gaseous from coal (according to the composition of Thar coal

2. Compare both with respect to enthalpy, and carbon emission

3. Procedure of Simulation by solving the gas energy equation.

4. Results of simulation of surface temperature, mixture of enthalpy and entropy.

5. Results of carbon emission

6. Plant recommended layout for Thar coal with implementation of accessories so, that carbon,
nitrogen and Sulphur emission can be reduced.

7. Discussion section that discusses and analyzes the results obtained from the analysis.

8. A short and crisp Conclusion section describing the major findings.

9. A reference section that gives reference of all equations, material properties and special
assumptions used in the analysis and specified in the report. The references should be given in a
numbered format and each reference must be cited in the main text of report.

Assessment Criteria:
The assessment of the CEP will be carried out according to the assessment rubrics. The distribution of the
marks shows levels of the attributes achieved, that contribute towards the attainment of the respective
CLO, PLO and hence the cognitive domain level.

• The maximum possible marks for the CEP is 10 / 10

• The selection criteria for the best, average and worst of the CEP amongst the student groups, is as
follows:
❖ 0–3 Total Marks (Worst)
❖ 4–7 Total Marks (Average)
❖ 8 – 10 Total Marks (Best)
