1. This paper consists of sections A, B and C with a total of Eleven (11) questions.

2. Answer all questions in section A and B and two (2) questions from section C.

3. Map extract of Mafinga sheet 23/4 is provided.

4. Section A carries sixteen (16) marks, section B carries fifty four (54) marks and section
C carries thirty (30) marks.

5. All writings must be in blue or black ink, except drawings which should in pencil

6. All communication devices, programmable calculators and any unauthorized materials


are not allowed in the examination room.

a) Analyze four procedures of determining the actual distance from the map giving
concrete example of distance of a road from grid reference 530819 to 567874 and
calculate its distance in KM.
b) Name the dominant method used to show the general appearance of the surface of the
mapped area giving evidence from the map.
c) Determine three land uses of the mapped area.
d) State the longitudinal and latitudinal location of the mapped area giving evidence
from the map.
4. The following fluctuation of water volume in millimeters was noted in rivers RUVU,
RUAHA, and KILOMBERO from 2010 to 2012 as shown below.

5. Suppose you want to conduct research on the effect of flood which is caused by heavy
rainfall in most parts of Tanzania. You are interested in getting information by looking at
the phenomena and record what you see.
a) Name the method you will use in getting the information.
b) Explain four types of the method suggested in (a) above.
c) Analyze three advantages of the method of data collection used.
6. Students were given a task by their teacher to conduct a simple land surveying around
school compounds.
(a) Analyze three principles they considered to obtain accurate measurements.
(b) Mention the qualities they ensured for good booking. (three points)
(c) Explain three types of errors they might have faced during surveying.

7. On Feb.6, 2023, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred in southern Turkey and Syria. It
was among the most devastating earthquakes to occur in the world. As a Geography
student;
a) Analyze three factors that lead to the occurrence of earthquake.
b) Name the scale used to determine the magnitude of earthquake.
c) Mention with examples two belts in Tanzania where earthquakes can occur.
d) Suggest three safety ways of minimizing the effects of earthquakes.
8. Study the photograph below then answer the questions that follow.

a) Name the type of climate with one reason from the photograph.
b) Outline three characteristics of the climate identified.
c) Point out three factors that may lead to loss of biodiversity in the photographed area.
d) Suggest one place in Tanzania where the photograph might have been taken.

SECTION C (30 Marks)


Answer two (2) questions in this section
9. Tanzania is endowed with various natural resources including minerals which are
extracted in different mines. The extraction process seems to be unfriendly to the
environment but that has not stopped the people and government from mining activities.
Why do you think the mining activities are encouraged regardless of the side effects on
the environment? (6 points).
10. Soil is widely faced with effects of erosion and loss of fertility due to various activities
taking place on the land. Analyze six farming practices which help to manage and
conserve soil in Tanzania.
11. Human population is affected by various factors which cause it to change over time, one
of them is the one through which people move from one place to another for temporary or
permanent change of residence. What do you think are the pulling factors towards such
movement? (6 points).
