Brief history of Rugby
-Originated in England in the first half of the 19th century.
What is rugby union?
Rugby union or simply rugby is a contact sport played with an oval ball that
may be kicked, carried and passed from hand to hand.
Points are scored by grounding the ball behind the opponents’ goal line
(thereby scoring a try) or by kicking it between the two posts and over the
crossbar of the opponents’ goal.
A rugby team has 15 players: 8 of them are called the forwards, these 8
players form the scrum and line out.7 of them are called the backs, and
they do most of the fast running. The scrum half connects the forwards and
the backs. The last man is the full back.
You play rugby with your hands and feet. You are ONLY allowed to pass
backwards.
A game of rugby is played for 80 minutes-40 minutes each half.
The World Rugby is the world governing body for the sport of rugby union.
The Zambia Rugby Union is the national organization for the sport of rugby
union.

Scoring points:
1) A Try. You score a try by placing the ball on the ground on or behind the try
line. A try is 5 points.
2) Conversion. Is when you kick the ball from the ground and it passes
between the goal posts and above the cross bar. A conversion is 2 points.
3) Penalty kick. If the referee awards you a penalty kick, your team can
choose to restart the game, kick for a line out or kick the ball between the
posts. If you kick the ball between the posts and score, you get 3 points.
4) Drop goal. This is when you intentionally drop the ball in front of you and
kick it immediately after it hits the ground and passes above the cross bar
and between the goal posts. A drop goal is 3 points
Basic Rules
Scrum:
A scrum is a restart after a foul when the ball travels forward from the
hands.
Suppose you throw the ball forward or you drop the ball and it bounces
forward. In this case, a referee will decide that a scrum must be formed.
The forwards from both teams are set in a specific formation and set
against each other. The scrum half will roll the ball straight into the middle
of the scrum and both teams are allowed to contest for the ball. While the
ball is in the scrum, you are NOT allowed to touch it with your hands. When
the ball comes out of the scrum, it is usually the scrum half that passes it to
one of the waiting players.
Words used for the formation of a scrum are: ‘crouch’, ‘bind’, ‘set’

Lineout:
If the ball leaves the field of play because it is kicked out or because the
player with the ball is tackled and falls across the touch line or the foot of
the player who is holding the ball touches the touch line, the game will be
restarted with a line out.
To form a lineout, the forwards of both teams will stand between the 5m
line and 15 metre line. Next, the ball will be thrown between the straight
line by the team in possession. The player who can jump the highest and
may be lifted by his team mates may catch the ball or tap it to his scrum
half.

Tackle:
You can stop a player by tackling
You can only tackle a player with the ball
You are only allowed to use hands, arms and body
You can grab the player with the ball everywhere except his head and neck
You are not allowed to kick him or tackle him whilst he is in the air. If you
do, the referee will send you off immediately by issuing a yellow and red
card.
The most common way to tackle is to use a shoulder and arms targeting the
opposition player below the waist so he falls to the ground.

Maul:
Suppose a player with the ball makes contact with the player who wants to
tackle him but instead of falling to the ground they keep standing up,
immediately teams from both teams will join this formation to compete for
the ball which will be somewhere in the middle. This formation is called a
maul. The man with the ball will try to turn his back to his opponents and
make the ball available for his team mates. If the maul takes too long, the
referee will allow a scrum in favour of the team moving forward.

Ruck:
A ruck is when the man with the ball is tackled and the players fall on the
ground.
During a ruck, two rules come into play:
1) The man who made the tackle must let go of the tackled player.
2) The man who is tackled must release the ball immediately.
Offside:
There are several ways to be offside:
During a maul. The offside line starts at the heel of the foot of the player in the
maul and runs across the field from touch line to touch line. No one can enter the
maul unless if they do so from behind their player’s foot.
