ELECTRICAL PRINCIPLES

INSTRUCTIONS
Answer questions ONE and any OTHER two questions.
Question one carries 30 marks and other questions carries 20 marks each.
Take 1 coulomb =6.24×1018electrons

QUESTION ONE (30 MARKS)


a) Define the following terms:-
i) Valence electron
ii) Flux density
iii) Primary cells (3 Marks)

b) A 750 turn coil of inductance 3H carries a current of 2A. Calculate the flux linking the coil
and the e.m.f. induced in the coil when the current collapses to zero in 20ms. (5 Marks)
c) Draw the energy band diagrams to differentiate between conductors, semiconductors and
insulators. (6 Marks)
d) (i) Differentiate between primary cell and secondary cells. (2 Marks)
(ii) State two examples of primary cells and two of secondary cells. (4 Marks)
e) A direct current of 4A flows into a previously uncharged 20μF capacitor for 3ms. Determine
the p.d. between the plates. (5 Marks)
f) Draw circuit symbols of the following:-
i) Capacitor
ii) Inductor (2 Marks)
g) Draw a well labeled diagram of mercury cell. (3 Marks)

a) Using a well labelled diagram describe the operation of an electric bell. (10 marks)
b) Briefly describe the following defects in relation to chemical cells (10 marks)

QUESTION THREE
a) Explain factors which affect the inductance of an inductor (4 Marks)
b) An air capacitor is made from two flat parallel plates 0.5mm apart; the magnitude
of charge on each plate is 0.01μC when the potential is 200V. Calculate:
i) Its capacitance (2 Marks)
ii) Area of each plate (3 Marks)
iii) Total energy stored (3 Marks)
c) State any two effects of electric current their applications (4 marks)
d) Name four applications of electromagnetism (4 Marks)

QUESTION FOUR (20MARKS)


a) Mention THREE Advantages of Liquid Fuels over Solid Fuels and THREE
Advantages of Solid Fuels over Liquid Fuels (6 marks)
b) Giving examples state and explain FOUR different forms of energy (8 marks)
c) An electric heater consumes 1.8MJ when connected to a 250V supply for 30
minutes. Find the power rating of the heater and the current taken from the
supply. (6 marks)
QUESTION FIVE (20MARKS)
a) A coil of inductance 318.3mH and negligible resistance is connected in series with a 200
resistor to a 240V ,50Hz supply. Calculate (12 marks)
i). The inductive reactance of the coil
ii). The impedance of the circuit.
iii).The current in the circuit.
iv).The p.d across each component
v). The circuit phase angle
b) Outline three factors that affect the inductance of an inductor. (6 marks)
c) State Lenz law. (2 marks)
