Introduction
"Sonic and friends 2" is a non-profit Sonic fangame, based on classic Sonic games. It started
to be created about 2002 and has finished in 2016, with several periods of inactivity in between.
This version breaks completely with the previous "Sonic and friends 2" (since beta 2.8 to
back), the entire engine has been rewriten, it's practically a new program.
Graphic systems
Depending on your machine, some systems work better. There are also options that are only
available on some systems, and others will be different depending on the system.
Allegro – DirectDraw 7
Allegro 4.2 is used for graphics handling; the game is painted in a DirectX 7 window managed by
Allegro.
Advantages:
- High compatibility.
- High performance using software, regardless of the power of video card.
- Extended screen mode for two players.
- Water and hot effects.
Disadvantages:
- Bilineal filter only through software, very slow over 2x.
OpenGL (normal)
Native OpenGL API is used for rendering.
Advantages:
- High performance using video card.
- Extended screen mode for two players.
Disadvantages:
- No bilineal filter.
OpenGL (screen-independent backbuffer)
Same as above, but the graphics are rendered to a internal buffer and later it is painted to screen.
Advantages:
- High performance using video card.
- Bilineal filter.
- Water effects.
Windows Standard GDI
This system does not use neither Direct3D nor OpenGL. The game is painted in a window using the
operation system GDI functions. Allegro 4.2 is used internally for managing graphics.
Advantages:
- Most compatibility.
- Same advantages as Allegro.
Disadvantages:
- Same disadvantages as Allegro.
Direct3D 9
Native Direct3D 9 API is used for rendering.
Advantages:
- High performance using video card.
- Bilinear filter.
Startup window
Graphic system
You can select one graphic system of the above.
Color depth
You can select a color depth to the game. Not all color
depths are supported in all graphics systems.
Screen size
It defines the relative size of game screen (regardless of
window stretching). Available options:
• Current: It remains current set size.
• Standard: It set a 4:3 size ratio. Size will be 320x240
(or 640x480 in double definition mode).
• Panoramic. It set a panoramic size ratio. Size will be 360x240 (or 720x480 in double
definition mode).
This configuration can be changed in "Options" menu of Title Screen.
Definition
You can select between play with original definition, or with double definition (graphic have been
doble-size redrawn, and there is a slightly smoother motion).
This option can be changed at game time in the "Display" menu of the menubar.
Fullscreen
If this option is selected, the game begins at fullscreen mode. This mode can be changed at game
time, throught F2 key, or in the "Display" menu of the menubar, or in "Options" menu.
Sound: Enable wave
If this option is selected, sound effects and OGG music (if it's available) will be enabled.
Sound: Enable midi
If this option is selected, midi player will be enabled.
Keyboard commands in the title screen
F2: Change to fullscreen.
F4: Show/hide menubar.
Keyboard commands during the game
Escape: Pauses the game and show Options Menu.
Enter: Pauses the game and show blue ring count in current act.
F1: Makes a screenshot.
F2: Switches between fullscreen and windowed.
F4: Show/hide menubar.
Keys 1-8: It changes the way of division of the screen. The key 8 commutes between
automatic division and manual division.
Characters actions
Actions can only be performed if the character is qualified to do so.
Basic actions (fly, glide, climb and spindash)
They are performed as in classic sonic games.
Hold on to player 2 in order to fly
When player 2 is flying, you can hold on it as in "Sonic 3". In “Sonic & Friends 2” you can use this
advantage even if there is no human player. To do that, press Action button (Alt key by default) in
order to player 2 begins fly. Now, you can hold on it. While you're holding on the player 2, you can
use the directional keys in order to move through the air.
Hadoken
Press the following key combination: Up, Down, Foward, Jump. Only Liu has this skill.

Special stage
Find a big ring in order to enter to special stage (as in "Sonic
3"). Inside special stage you could get all chaos emeralds and
as a result convert Sonic into Supersonic. But be careful,
when a big ring has been spent, it will not be available again,
not even if you reload the game.
Special stage is only available in "single player" mode.
Blue rings
Blue rings are hidden along all zones. You must explore in depth to find them. If you
find all blue rings, four small new zones will be unlocked, which will be availables
in the Zone Select menu after completing the standard zones. Additionally, if you
find all blue rings, yellow big rigns will be restored.
Blue rings are only available if you choose a saveable game slot (they are not
available if you choose the “no save” slot).
If you press Enter during the game, a display appears showing the collected blue rings count and the
total blue rings count in current act.
Title menu options
Press right and left keys in order to navigate between different options.
Start
Starts the game in story mode. You will able to select a slot for start a new game o continue a
existing game (as in "Sonic 3").
Versus
You will compete against antoher player in some of zones that you have reached (of all save
games). There are 3 competition modes:
• Fight: The players have to fight, using jumping and other attacks in order to cause damage
to opponent.
• Go to goal: The players have to run in order to be the first to reach the goal.
• Go to goal and fight. The players have to reach the goal, and also they can fight.
Options
Here there are many options to configure the game, which will not be explained in this user-manual
because they are too many. You should explore on your own. This menu also can be entered during
the game pressing Enter key. Some options only will be available on title screen, others one only
will be available during the game. Moreover, some options will be available on menu bar, and other
ones are exclusives of menubar or options screen.

Quit
Exits the program.
Playlist
You can use your own playlist. To do this, use the Playlist.exe program. Be sure to check the "Use
custom playlist in the game" in order to not using the default playlist.
The supported file types are MIDI and OGG.
