incorporation in 1975, it has offered a full range of IT products and services to various
industries throughout India and various markets overseas. CMC’s services include custom
applications design and development, maintenance, support and enhancements of existing
applications and infrastructure development and management services.
CMC has over 20 years of experience in providing cost-effective solutions to complex
problems. With 18 offices, 150 service locations, 520 non-resident locations and over 10,000
employees worldwide, we provide a wide spectrum of unique information technology
solutions and services to a clientele of premier organizations in the government and private
sectors. CMC Americas, our subsidiary, services clients in the US, while our branch offices
in the UK and Dubai market our products and services in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
Background
In 1975, CMC Limited commenced operations as 'Computer Maintenance Corporation'. In
1978, when IBM decided to wind up its operations in India, CMC took up the challenge to
service all installations left by them and took over the maintenance of over 800 IBM
installations spread across the country. Later, it also maintained computers supplied by scores
of other foreign manufacturers.
With maintenance activities under way, CMC started focusing on other areas of Information
Technology. It’s R&D Centre at Hyderabad undertook pioneering projects in the areas of
contemporary technology. Software development in data communications and database
management became one of the company’s fastest-growing activities. And INDONET,
India’s first commercial computer network, began taking shape.
Today, while hardware maintenance continues to play a major role, CMC’s activities have
advanced in many new directions. CMC is one of India’s leading Systems Integrators, with
multi-faceted expertise in Information Technology. It is this totality of expertise that has
enabled CMC to develop a variety of superior IT products and to execute a number of
complex and challenging projects, not only in India, but also in Europe, America, Africa, the
Middle East and South-East Asia. As a part of its globalization activity, CMC has acquired a
wholly-owned subsidiary in USA - BRI Inc., thereby expanding its international activities.
CMC’s Vision
Global top 20 systems engineering and integration company by 2020
Corporate Mission
As an innovative world class systems engineering and integration company, we shall provide
sustainable, advanced technology solutions and services to our global customers, and in
projects of national importance, maximizing value to our stake holders and the communities
we serve.
Large and Complex project management capabilities
Since its incorporation in 1975, CMC has an enviable record of successfully building IT
solutions for massive and complex infrastructure and market projects.
Take, for instance, just three of the many major projects undertaken by us:
A passenger ticketing and reservations system for the Indian Railways, which
runs 6,000 passenger trains carrying over 10 million passengers a day, on a
90,000-km railway network covering around 8,000 railway stations.
A cargo handling system is a comprehensive online real time cargo handling
system to integrate all complex and varied activities of container terminals. This
system has been implemented for several Indian and International ports.
An online transaction processing system for the Bombay Stock Exchange, which
handles millions of securities trading transactions every day.
End-to-end solutions capability
We manage turnkey projects, and have built, managed and supported our customers' IT
systems across the value chain - infrastructure, applications and business processes. That is
because our capabilities span the entire IT spectrum: IT architecture; hardware; software
(including systems and application software, development or implementation, maintenance,
and frameworks); network consulting; and IT-enabled processing services.
CMC's business is organized into four strategic business units (SBUs):
Customer services (CS)
The customer services business unit handles the business-critical IT needs of large and
medium corporate organizations. These include infrastructure development and management,
networking management, storage, third-party maintenance, third party equipment supply and
integration, networking consultancy, and environmental engineering.
CMC holds the No.1 position in third party systems support. It caters to a wide range of
systems, with several new business tie-ups and a vastly increased geographical spread. We
have bagged the Techies award, instituted by a leading Indian IT publication, for being the
best IT-maintenance company in the country.
Systems integration (SI)
A leading systems integrator in India, CMC has consolidated its position in the domestic
software market as well as in offshore turnkey projects.
The systems integration SBU handles solutions deployment. This includes software
development, software maintenance and support, turnkey project implementation and systems
consultancy.
A recent survey by a leading IT publication ranked CMC as India's No.2 domestic software
developer. Executing a very large number of infrastructure projects has consolidated our IT
expertise in 'horizontal' skills and our domain experience of 'vertical' markets. This places us
in an unassailable position in this area of IT.
IT enabled services (ITES)
The ITES SBU is a value-added service provider. It offers optical mark reading (OMR) and
intelligent character recognition (ICR) based forms processing services; document
management services; file transfer and data management services; managed networks
services; facilities management; electronic data interchange (EDI) services; web design and
hosting services; as well as smart card and biometric security solutions.
CMC places special emphasis on electronic data interchange (EDI), e Commerce applications
and Internet services. This creates a synergy with our other services, to benefit our customers
over a large geographical area. The ITES SBU has created new business opportunities by
developing websites and home pages using Internet technology. It has provided metro-area
network and wide-area network connectivity to many of its customers.
Education and training (E&T)
We have more than 250 IT-education franchisees and several collaborative training centers
with renowned universities and institutes. CMC is also exploring the field of internet-based
training.
The SBU also plays a vital role in imparting quality IT education to corporate houses,
institutions, central and state government departments, professional establishments and other
clients, for whom CMC develops IT solutions. This is especially important in very large and
complex projects.
For CMC, education and training services is not merely a business area. We see it as our
commitment towards building India's IT-personnel power base. We have also started
franchising education and training overseas.
Extensive domain expertise and technological competencies

understanding of verticals, straddling a range of sectors from banking and insurance, power,
mining and defense to education. Our high quality, high value IT solutions have helped
reshape businesses and delivered measurable results to our customers.
Sizable resource pool with diverse skill sets
We achieve this with the help of our resource pool of engineers trained in diverse
technologies, with vast domain knowledge and varied skill sets. Of our 3,000 employees,
about half have more than five years of experience. We also have a large competency pool
that works on emerging technologies and competency areas. We have an impeccable
educational profile; as many as 44 per cent of our employees are qualified graduate
engineers, while another 27 per cent have post-graduate or higher qualifications.
We also conduct significant research into emerging technologies and competence areas at our
state-of-the-art, ISO 9001-certified R&D center in Hyderabad, India. That is what gives us an
edge in complex, high technology projects.
Our centres at Western and Southern India have the distinction of having achieved Level 5
(optimizing level) of the SEI's Capability Maturity Model (software).
Strong customer relationships
CMC's customer orientation and service culture lead to enduring bonds with clients. Our
distinct value proposition and service culture, coupled with our track record of successful
service delivery, are reflected in our long-standing customer relationships with dominant
players in key infrastructure, services and government sectors.
Our customers include some of the biggest organizations in India. The trust reposed in us by
our clients is reflected in our growing revenues from operations such as post-implementation
maintenance and support activities.
Strong service delivery chain
In the domestic market, we have established an extensive services network penetrating the
remotest geographical locations. This gives us an unmatched advantage in servicing
customers with an all-India presence, such as the railways, banks, government entities and
other organizations with countrywide operations.
Growth strategies
CMC's growth strategy focuses on capitalizing on its unique skill sets and leveraging the
synergies with CMC and other Tata group companies, for growth in revenue and profitability
of our operations.
CMC has extensively and continually updated expertise in real-time systems, on-line
systems, process control, image processing, data communications, networking, hardware
infrastructure, parallel architectures etc. Integrated with this horizontal expertise in
information technology is CMC’s vertical expertise in a whole range of industries - both
infrastructure industries like Irrigation, Mining, Power, Oil and Transportation; as well as
service industries such as Banking and Finance, Securities, Law & Order an Education.
It is this totality of expertise that has enabled CMC to develop a variety of superior products
and to execute a number of complex and large scale projects. CMC’s solutions are
successfully implemented across the globe and a variety of businesses are running on our
solution.

details.
CMC’s involvement with the customer starts much before the training is actually conducted.
CMC’s training specialists meet key officials in the client organization to understand the
application it desires to develop, implement or use. They also interact with the employees to
assess the level of proficiency they posses and the gap that exists between the current level
and desired level. This skills gap analysis helps to define the objective of the training and the
end result desired. The objective is firmed up further, by having another round of discussions
with the officials of the customer.
Select technical training programs conducted by CMC Ltd. follow the Blended Learning
Approach. This is a comprehensive approach to training that guides each learner through all
stages of the learning lifecycle. It consists of four components – Skills Gap Analysis, Course
Design, Training Delivery and Post Training Support – and combines classroom and e-
Learning products and services to create the most effective learning experience available in
the industry.
Skills Gap Analysis:
Under this component of Blended Learning, personal consultation and assessment tests
identify the precise needs for which we offer the most efficient training strategy to help meet
organizational goals and ensure an appropriate Return on Investment (RoI). Personal
consultation and assessment tests determine the current competencies and skill level to
identify the best training path for the learners.
Course Design:
Depending on the findings of the TNA assessment, CMC Ltd. will design a customized
student manual for the learners, which will have examples, exercises and case studies from
their own working environment.
Training Delivery:
The training would be provided by experienced and qualified faculty members who are
further certified by CMC Ltd. Most of our technical faculty members are, MCA or
Engineers. Most of them are either Vendor certified or are in the process of getting the
certification from the Vendors. This combination of profile makes our faculty members one
of the best available in the Industry.
Post Training Support:
All the learners will be provided a post training support. They can have an access to help desk
on which either through a phone call or through an email they can get a response to any of
their technical queries within scope of the training attended by them. If the organisation
desires, we can also provide Mentor services for a limited time in which our technical
resource can be positioned in the premises of the organization and facilitate the learners to
apply the concepts learnt by them in the classroom to their professional environment.
CMC’s Job portal: CMC has developed an on line job portal exclusively for CMC students
and authorized campuses. This will provide a vibrant platform for job seekers and potential
employers to interact.
2.4 CENTRE FOR EDUCATION TECHNOLOGY:
To keep pace with changing Software and Hardware scenario, it is necessary to emphasize on
the current IT trends and develop quality programs to impart training and education in the
contemporary topics. With the advent of newer technologies the process of imparting the
training to a wide range of people has itself gone through revolutionary changes. Quantum
jumps are taking place in the field of Education Technology.
Newer, better and more effective methods of imparting education are coming up. Traditional
methods of teaching using books, classroom lectures and written exams on pen and paper to
evaluate the knowledge gained are not deemed enough anymore. Using modern technologies
like multimedia, online training and testing etc., the emphasis has shifted to computer based
training which uses text, audio, visuals and animation in interactive as well as self paced
mode. Customer satisfaction levels have seen marked improvement with the use of these
modern methods of education technology. The paradigm is shifting from instructor based
learning in it to net-based learning. With ISPs coming up in India in a big way, it is a only a
matter of time before all parts of the country have information kiosks which will enable
aspirants to access services over the net in a cost effective manner. Connection to remote
places has also become easier with the introduction of a number of satellites including that of
low earth orbit satellites.
Keeping these factors in mind, CMC has set up a full-fledged Centre for Education
Technology. The Centre for Education Technology will engage in focused activities to
enhance the quality, effectiveness, productivity and reach of Education & Training activities
of CMC by employing appropriate state of the art IT and Education Technology tools. CET is
