I am applying to the Liberal Arts and Sciences programme at UCU because it offers high
quality, research-led teaching and flexibility. Given the breadth of my interests in the
humanities and beyond UCU is able to offer me everything I could wish for in a university
degree. As the child of two parents who are both professors of literature, I have always
been encouraged to read widely, to explore ideas and I have developed keen interests in
art, history, film, photography, politics and especially the performance and production of
music. I know that I am interested in the overlaps between humanities, social sciences
and sciences. I believe the AUC course will allow me to develop my interests in history,
media studies, literature, classics and philosophy over three years. These are options
that very few universities offer together and with such depth. The possibilities in
amalgamating my interests in these areas and learning in new areas is really exciting for
me. My recent schooling has allowed me to gravitate more towards history and classical
cultures. Currently, for my Leaving Cert research paper in History, I am investigating the
effectiveness of Lawrence of Arabia as a leader from the Arab and the British
perspective. In Classical Studies I am researching and writing about how the Ancient
Greeks perceived foreign cultures, comparing their views with the views of modern
societies. My academic interests are matched by my passion for creativity, especially in
music and art, and are driven by a desire to understand the world around me and how I
can acquire the skills to navigate it successfully. I am, additionally, particularly keen to
study in d the Netherlands. My experience of travelling has taught me that I love learning
about new cultures and I very much wish to study with students from around the world. I
know that the UCU programme is the best opportunity for me to learn in a positive
environment and gain the experience that will help me to excel in the things that I am
passionate about. A more standard university course, in my own opinion, would constrict
me and would not allow me to explore all of my academic interests and find where my
skill sets lie. I want to be able to learn as much as I can about the topics that I love and
am curious about, rather than being forced down an unnecessary and limiting path
where I cannot take the skills I have learnt from one field and apply them to another. For
example, I would like to apply the lessons I have learnt in a philosophy course and use
those teachings to understand the ethical thinking behind artistic or political movements.
For me this is the perfect course. It allows me to get an education that will be driven by
my curiosity and will equip me with the analytic skills I will need to be a creator and
thinker.
