What’s New in the InForm OS

HP 3PAR InForm Operating System 3.1.1 enables customers to increase multi-tenant consolidation
on shared infrastructure and increase agility and efficiency with several new features and
enhancements. InForm OS 3.1.1 features include the following benefits:
• Enhanced multi-tenancy with support for the new HP 3PAR Storage System and several
scalability and resiliency features
• Autonomic management for agility and ease of use with HP 3PAR Peer Motion Software,
autonomic system rebalance, and other enhanced capabilities
• Thin Technologies for efficiency and capacity reduction with fine-grained 16KB space
reclamation with HP 3PAR Thin Persistence Software and remote copy bandwidth optimization
with HP 3PAR Remote Copy Software.

Multi-tenancy for Consolidation on Scalable, Resilient Infrastructure

HP P10000 3PAR Storage System Support
InForm Operating System (OS) 3.1.1 enables support for HP P10000 3PAR Storage System, a
new, highly virtualized Utility Storage platform that is ideal for virtual and cloud datacenters.

6 HP 3PAR InForm OS Release Notes

Additional Multi-tenancy Enhancements
• HP 3PAR InForm OS now operates in 64-bit mode, enabling greater scalability levels on HP
P10000 3PAR Storage Systems. InForm OS 3.1.1 supports the HP P10000 3PAR Storage
System, HP 3PAR T-Class Storage System, and HP 3PAR F-Class Storage System – all in 64-bit
mode.
• Chunklet size on HP P10000 3PAR Storage Systems has been increased to 1GB. Chunklets
are the first layer of mapping in the InForm OS advanced internal virtualization that increases
storage management efficiency, capacity utilization, and performance. Chunklets virtualize
physical drives of any size into a pool of granular, uniform-sized virtual disks. The increase
in Chunklet size to 1GB on HP P10000 3PAR Storage Systems delivers headroom for support
of the rapid increase expected in capacity levels on enterprise SATA drives over the lifecycle
of storage system. Chunklet size for HP 3PAR T and F-Class Storage Systems remains unchanged
at 256MBs.
• T10 DIF Support on HP P10000 3PAR Storage System augments existing end-to-end internal
checks for data consistency.
• HP 3PAR Remote Copy Software now supports end-to-end CRC checksum for assured data
consistency.
• Node-by-node online software upgrades with “pause” (of online upgrade process after each
controller upgrade) are now supported for any online software upgrade post InForm OS 3.1.1,
including between major or minor versions of InForm OS. Previously, this approach to online
software upgrades was supported with InForm OS Maintenance Update (MU) releases only.
“Pause” of the online software upgrade process after each controller is upgraded enables
validation of active I/O on all host paths before the software is upgraded on the next controller.
• Online software upgrades post InForm OS 3.1.1 will support HP 3PAR Remote Copy Groups
remaining online during the online software upgrade process. This enhancement enables users
of HP 3PAR Remote Copy Software to continue to replicate and protect their data while
upgrading their HP 3PAR Storage System to a new and enhanced version of InForm OS.
• Metadata errors are now isolated to individual storage volumes, thereby shielding other
storage volumes from propagation of the metadata errors. The storage volumes with the
detected metadata errors are taken offline and repaired while the system remains online and
continues to serve data for other applications/tenants from other storage volumes.
• A new serviceability safety measure – controller node pre-integration test – is now available
to verify that a controller node is installed properly and ready to accept I/O load before it is
logically added to the cluster of controller nodes in the system.
• A new safety measure – Remote Copy link pre-integration test - is now available to the users
of HP 3PAR Remote Copy Software to verify the stability of remote copy links in advance of
adding these links within HP 3PAR Storage System for use with Remote Copy.

Autonomic Management for Agility and Ease of Use

HP 3PAR Peer Motion Software
HP 3PAR Peer Motion Software is the first non-disruptive, do-it-yourself data migration tool for
enterprise Storage Area Networks. Peer Motion delivers simple, fool-proof, non-disruptive data
mobility between HP 3PAR Storage Systems. With Peer Motion, HP 3PAR Storage System customers
can load balance I/O workloads across systems at will, perform technology refresh seamlessly,
cost-optimize asset lifecycle management, and lower technology refresh capital expenditure.
Unlike traditional block migration approaches, Peer Motion enables customers to migrate storage
volumes between any HP 3PAR Storage Systems online, non-disruptively, and without complex
planning or dependency on extra tools. Peer Motion leverages HP 3PAR Thin Built In™ technology
and HP 3PAR Thin Conversion Software to power the simple and rapid inline conversion of
inefficient, “fat” volumes on source arrays to more efficient, higher-utilization “thin” volumes on

What’s New in the InForm OS 7

the destination HP 3PAR Storage System. Peer Motion Manager orchestrates all stages of the data
migration lifecycle to ensure data migration is simple and fool-proof. Peer Motion software can be
ordered separately.

Autonomic System Rebalance

HP 3PAR Dynamic Optimization Software now delivers autonomic system rebalancing to drive
large scale performance optimizations with one button after adding new resources to the HP 3PAR
Storage System or moving a large number of volumes between tiers. Dynamic Optimization first
analyzes how volumes are using physical disk space and which resources were added to the
system. It then makes intelligent, autonomic adjustments to ensure optimal volume distribution of
storage volumes.
Data movement occurs as efficiently as possible by intelligently employing the best-suited data
movement layer and applying rebalancing at a fine-grained, sub-volume level as follows, depending
on the set of new resources available within the system.

Resources added to system Data movement layer Data movement unit Sub/Whole volume

Drives Chunklet Chunklet Sub-volume

Drive Chassis/Cages Logical Disk Logical Disks Sub-volume

Controller Nodes Logical Disk Logical Disks Whole Volume

Autonomic system rebalance is supported both in InForm CLI (with the new tunesys command)
and InForm Management Console.

Additional Enhancements to Dynamic Optimization

• The tunesys command can be used to rebalance an entire HP 3PAR Storage System after
upgrades. The command can rebalance Logical Disk capacity to new nodepairs and to new
disks associated with existing nodepairs. The tunesys command can also detect and correct
mismatches between Common Provisioning Group (CPG) and Logical Disk settings.
The tunesys -cpg command option can be used to rebalance the Logical Disks within a
CPG with a single command. Instead of rebalancing individual volumes one at a time from
their original (source) CPG to a new CPG, you now have the flexibility to rebalance all volumes
within a CPG with a single command and without requiring that the volumes be moved to a
new CPG in order for the rebalancing to take effect.
Note that virtual volumes under the control of HP 3PAR Adaptive Optimization software are
not modified during system tuning.
• Rebalancing of Thin Provisioned Virtual Volumes after Controller Nodes are added to the
System now reassigns Logical Disk ownership across all nodes in the system, thereby delivering
performance optimization while minimizing ongoing remote I/O over the System backplane.

Configurable Priority for Snapshot Promote

Configurable priority for promote operation – which reverts a base volume back to an earlier
point-in-time copy - enables users to flexibly adapt the speed of rapid application recovery to meet
their business requirements. Users can set the priority level as High, Medium, or Low. This
enhancement is supported with the promote of a Virtual or Full Copy. Configurable priority levels
are also available for use with Full Copy to control the speed of creation of Full Copies of storage
volumes.

Additional Enhancements to Virtual Copy
The maximum number of Virtual Copies on an HP P10000 3PAR Storage System is 12,000,
providing users with abundant flexibility for maintaining extended libraries of efficient, disk-based,
online, point-in-time copies.

Expanded User Roles

New InForm OS user roles - Create, Basic Edit, 3PAR_AO, and 3PAR_RM - provide restricted
privilege levels, empowering less experienced administrators to own subsets of administrative tasks
safely.

Additional Ease of Use Enhancements

• Greater number of simultaneous Full Copy operations and promote operations enables use
of Full Copy more broadly and at greater scale.
• SMI-S 1.4 and SNMP v3 support enables enhanced standards-based management of HP
3PAR Storage Systems.
• InForm OS CLI client now supports the IPv6 standard.

Thin Technologies for Efficiency and Capacity Reduction

Fine-grained 16KB Space Reclaim
HP 3PAR Thin Persistence Software leverages the HP 3PAR Thin Built-In ASIC to reclaim unused
space associated with deleted data – simply, quickly, and non-disruptively. Thin Persistence is now
enhanced with the equivalent of a defragmentation tool that intelligently consolidates “used” 16KB
pages from sparse regions, yielding higher reclaim efficiency of 128MB regions for reuse by other
volumes in the same CPG. Now, enhanced Thin Persistence means thin volumes on HP 3PAR
Storage Systems can stay as lean and efficient as possible.

Remote Copy Bandwidth Optimization

HP 3PAR Remote Copy Software now leverages the HP 3PAR Thin Built-In ASIC to detect and
eliminate the remote replication of zero pages during initial synchronization and ongoing
synchronous replication. As a result, precious remote copy link bandwidth is utilized efficiently by
replicating non-zero written data only. This capability also enables near-instant initial synchronization
of new volumes that are added to a remote copy group.
Special capacity savings stem when remote copy bandwidth optimization is coupled with HP 3PAR
Thin Conversion and Thin Persistence Software. Fully provisioned, “fat” source volumes can be
converted simply and rapidly to higher efficiency, “thin” target volumes during remote replication
while making efficient use of remote copy bandwidth. Capacity associated with zero pages on
the source volume is eliminated on the replication target volume. Thin Persistence keeps the thin
target volume as lean and efficient as possible.

Additional Remote Copy Enhancements

• Remote Copy over Fibre Channel now supports replication over 8Gb/s Fibre Channel links
between HP 10000 3PAR Storage Systems.
• Remote Copy over IP now supports up to 4 Remote Copy links in 1-to-1 configuration for
greater resiliency and bandwidth.
• Granular remote copy statistics are available for each replicated storage volume, enabling
insight into the storage volumes that are top consumers of remote copy bandwidth.

What’s New in the InForm OS 9

• Remote Copy ease of use is extended with enhanced capability to start all remote copy groups
on an HP 3PAR Storage System with a single command.
• Remote Copy users now have the flexibility to replicate a Read/Write Virtual Copy of a
replicated storage volume to same or another destination HP 3PAR Storage System. Customers
with separate development or data mining data centers can leverage the enhanced capability
to provide these data centers with access to production data without interrupting the replication
process on the base storage volume.

Subnet restrictions removed

Prior to InForm OS 3.1.1, there were some restrictions related to using subnets 192.x.x.x, 172.x.x.x,
and 10.x.x.x such as not being able to use multiple instances of these subnets on the storage
system. As of InForm OS 3.1.1, these restrictions have been removed.

Modifications to the InForm OS

disconnected from the array. The storage system also sets a
Power_on_Reset Unit Attention on the LUN to indicate to the initiators
accessing the LUN that the reservation has been cleared.

46473 Retransmit queue issues When a local host write is terminated with error and the remote copy
request has been scheduled for retransmission, it is possible that the remote
copy request is not removed from the retransmit queue before it is canceled.
This can result in retransmit queue having stale entries which could result
in controller nodes going offline at a much later stage. The most common
situation for local host write to be terminated with error is when a different
controller node goes offline. This has been fixed in InForm OS 3.1.1.

46695 System manager panic occurs In previous releases, when the storage system was in certain configurations,

resolved.

55213 Improved SCSI-3 reservation The performance of SCSI-3 reservation handling has been improved,
handling performance preventing issues in which the storage system would be unable to keep
up with host requests.

55217 Invalid messages processed In rare cases, InForm OS could process invalid intra-cluster messages due
to a hardware timing issue on T and F-series storage systems. InFormOS
has been enhanced to detect this situation and re-read the data to ensure
only messages with correct contents are processed.

55218 Empty virtual volume set The error message when an empty virutal volume set was exported was
export error message not clear. Because exporting a virtual volume set isn't a logical action this
action is no longer allowed.

Bug ID Item Description

56082 LUN auto-choose Auto-choosing a LUN for a host that saw active exports using a host set
would sometimes incorrectly fail. The checks for host set exports have been
improved to resolve this issue.

56195 Defect in driver/firmware When the firmware in the 2-port 4GB Fibre Channel HBA in the E and
results in port failure. F-series storage systems received incorrectly formatted Fibre Channel
frames, the frame buffers were not released into the free buffer pool. When
a large number of these occurred, the port could run out of buffer credits
and fail. This was fixed by releasing these invalid frames correctly. This
problem was seen with a Cisco UCS server using the Palo interface card
connected to the storage system 4G port using a Brocade fabric when
SAN booting Windows 2008 R2. The Palo card driver/firmware had a
defect causing it to send incorrectly formatted Fibre Channel frames.

56573 RAID type displayed If zerold was mapped to a volume offset 0, then the Inform Management
incorrectly Console would display the incorrect RAID type. This has been fixed.

56754 InForm OS kernel panic due If an iSCSI port on a storage system received a non-login-related iSCSI
to accessing an un-initialized PDU from an initiator before the login command sequence was completed,
pointer. the InForm OS kernel could panic due to accessing an uninitialized pointer.
This has been fixed by processing the PDU correctly and sending a login
reject per the iSCSI protocol.

57546 System manager is unable to System manager does not start after a system or system manager restart
start up after panic, under the following scenario: running setvv -snp_cpg followed by
repeatedly panics after the removing the CPG which was being used as a snap CPG before running
initial panic. the command. Removal of the CPG could happen a few days later. Storage
systems with ESX clusters attached to them would have virtual host failures
because SCSI 2 reservations were not handled while system manager was
down. This has been fixed.

58215 The Link Power Down event The Link Power Down event is now properly cleared.
needs to be cleared to avoid
a node being placed in a
degraded state after the node
rejoins.

58269 InForm OS kernel incorrectly The InForm OS kernel could incorrectly identify SCSI-3 persistent reservation
identifies SCSI-3 events events from different nodes as duplicate events and omit some steps in
event validation and processing. As a consequence, each node's list of
registered SCSI initiators can be corrupted with un-initialized values. The
resulting inconsistency could trigger an assertion on all nodes when an
initiator registration is removed, causing cluster failure. A fix has been
implemented that extends the check for duplicate events to include the
node identifier and to ensure that initiator list fields are populated correctly
for duplicate events.

58586 Physical Disk (PD) scrub The initial design of the PD scrubber was to scrub the entire system every
performance issues seven days. Systems have gotten much larger and delays were added to
the prevent the scrubber from impacting system performance. These two
changes have resulted in many systems being scrubbed at a much slower
rate (every 60 days or more). This opens a larger window for double disk
failures. The previous design kept one chunklet per loop active and would
issue one ioctl to kernel every scan step. The new design issues one
ioctl for one chunklet of all the PDs on the node. Inside the kernel scan
steps are scheduled based on a self-implemented timer, so that the
scrubbing rate can be controlled, VERIFY operations can be spread out
evenly, and multiple PD scans can be processed at the same time.

58703 InForm OS kernel memory The InForm OS kernel could leak memory when processing some SCSI
leak commands, as memory buffers dynamically allocated for command
processing are not freed on command completion. This leak could affect
certain commands received on LUNs to which no virtual volume is exported.
If a sufficiently large number of these commands were received, available
memory was exhausted and the node would panic. A fix has been
implemented that ensures that all memory allocated for processing of these
commands is released on command completion.

Modifications to the InForm OS 13

Bug ID Item Description

58852 Recovery requires user During a power failure or multi-node panic recovery, there were some
intervention cases in which the system required user intervention in the form of issuing
a setsysmgr force_iderecovery command. These cases were a)
when all but one node had saved data without proper handshake with
the missing node and b) when the system was in the process of creating
a volume (base or snapshot) when the save occurred. A fix has been
implemented that eliminates the need for user intervention; the system will
now recover data automatically.

58886 Virtual volume with metadata For a virtual volume, if the metadata view of size is smaller than actual
issues does not fail properly size, the metadata checker will now fail the volume. Also while probing
for holes in snapspace due to reclaim, if metadata view cannot account
for all the holes, the metadata checker will now fail the volume.

58939 Recovery requires user During a power failure or multi-node panic recovery, if the storage system
intervention encountered problems paging in volume metadata, recovery could cause
all the nodes to panic. When the storage system restarted, it required user
intervention in the form of a setsysmgr force_iderecovery command
on order to proceed with recovery. A fix has been implemented in which,
if the metadata page has failed due to disk unavailability, the system will
now automatically proceeds with recovery, and does not require user
intervention.

59114 Disk drives unresponsive and If the firmware on the 4-port 4GB Fibre Channel HBA experienced a fatal
marked failed by storage error while I/O was ongoing to disk drives via the HBA, the firmware
system would not respond for several seconds while the transmit and receive lasers
were still active. This could lead to the disk drives becoming unresponsive
for up to a few minutes, resulting in the drives being marked failed by the
storage system. If disk cages were connected to multiple HBA ports, this
could result in multiple drives being marked failed leading to virtual volumes
getting marked unavailable. This has been resolved by having the firmware
turn off the transmit and receive lasers when it receives a fatal error, which
allows the drives to detect the link failure immediately and recover without
becoming unresponsive.

59274 System manager restart after A system manager restart after an online upgrade had a small chance of
online upgrade causes panics causing repeated system manager panics. This has been fixed.

59549 Improved SCSI-2 reservation The performance of SCSI-2 reservation handling has been improved to
handling performance allow more simultaneous incoming reservations.

59672 Old events appearing in After a master node restart or storage system restart, events from a long
showeventlog time period prior could reappear in showeventlog. This has been fixed.

60162 Remote Copy links down after After setting the port speed for Remote Copy links to 100Mbps from
changing port speed 1000Mbps the links failed due to negotiation issues. The links are
recovered by setting auto negotiation for those links. The ability to set the
speed to rates less than 1000Mbps will be removed in a future release.

60638 System manager copy When system manager attempted to create a copy of itself to handle a
creation failure results in showspace request and that copy creation failed, the event that was
repeated event filter panics. generated was not parsed correctly and resulted in repeated panics by
the event filter. Because this caused events to be queued in memory
indefinitely, an out of memory situation could result, especially in
configurations using remote copy. This has been fixed.

61125 Remote Port Indicator not Each 4GB Fibre Channel port on the storage system has 511 Remote Port
released properly Indicator (RPI) resources. One resource is used when an initiator logs in.
When the initiator logs out or gets disconnected, the RPI was not being
released. If the initiator logged back in with the same Fibre Channel D_ID,
the same RPI was being reused, but if it logged in with a different D_ID,
the original RPI was lost. After 511 such logins, the resource was exhausted
and all further logins were blocked. This was fixed by releasing the RPI
when an initiator logs out or is disconnected.

61212 Miscompare between primary A miscompare was occurring between primary and secondary volumes
and secondary volumes in the event of a node down. The miscompare happened when an I/O

14 HP 3PAR InForm OS Release Notes

Bug ID Item Description

was received that spanned two logical disks with different owners. The
I/O was split and passed to the logical disk owner nodes; however, if one
of these nodes failed , the backup node took over and completed the I/O.
This was where the remote copy miscompare was happening, although
the backup node reliably completed the I/O to the base volume on the
primary, it did not issue the remote copy request. This has been fixed.

61315 SCSI-2 reservations not being The handling of the Logical Unit Reset task management function has been
released corrected to ensure that SCSI-2 reservations on the addressed LUN are
released.

61808 Drive cage fails and becomes There was an error in the serial port in which characters were looped back
inaccessible after reset to the serial port which sometimes could cause a timeout, resulting in a
cage resetting and becoming inaccessible. A fix has been implemented
that prevents any characters from returning to the serial port and additional
checks have been put in place to prevent cages from becoming
inaccessible.

61903 Forked system manager System manager forked new processes to handle showspace and showvv
processes do not exit. commands. At times these processes would not exit after processing the
command. These processes consumed system resources and could lead
to problems such as filling /var/tmp_log and consuming all system memory.
A fix has been implemented that prevents the deadlock that caused the
issue.

62864 Alert issued when controller When a controller node unexpectedly goes offline, an alert with Message
node goes offline and rejoins Code 0x01a0007 or 0x1a0007 is generated with text indicating that a
the cluster BIOS log has been stored (saved) for that node. This alert does not get
auto-resolved when the node rejoins the cluster, but it can safely be deleted.
This alert will not be generated in a future release.

Limitations of the InForm OS

Fibre Channel/SCSI Interface
The InForm OS does not provide user-level control on write caching via the SCSI mode select
command. Write-caching is on by default. Deferred errors will never be reported after status is
sent for a write command. The InServ Storage Server system software may go into writethrough
mode while handling certain events such as loss of battery charge or a faulty node.
The following SCSI commands are supported but are effectively null operations: rezero_unit,
format_unit, seek, verify, sync_cache, send_diag. The SCSI command write verify
performs a write operation but not a verify operation.
Head-of-queue and ordered-queue are not supported. Simple-queue currently defaults to unrestricted
reordering.

Deleting Large Snapshot Volumes

For volumes that are extremely large and/or have a large amount of ongoing writes, deleting
snapshots of the volume may take a long time. This is particularly the case for volumes larger than
100GB. Times in excess of 20 minutes have been observed in the worst cases. As of release 2.1.2,
this no longer blocks growth of TPVVs, CPVVs, and CPGs, which previously could cause host writes
to fail. However, this will still make both the GUI and CLI unresponsive for the duration of the
snapshot deletion.
In addition to manual deletion via the removevv command, snapshot deletions may be performed
automatically by the use of Physical Copy or Remote Copy. Remote Copy makes particularly heavy
use of snapshot deletion when it is configured to use asynchronous periodic mode.

Limitations of the InForm OS 15

LDAP authentication
LDAP authentication using SSL with MD5-signed certificates is no longer supported. This limitation
applies to users of the InForm OS configured to use LDAP for authentication and authorization and
also configured to use SSL and require a certificate.
After upgrading to InForm OS 3.1.1, users who are authenticated with LDAP and who were
previously able to successfully log in to InServ are denied access. Attempted access using the CLI
displays Invalid user or password and attempted access using SSH displays repeated
prompts for the password. Running the checkpassword command for an LDAP user results in
the display of the following error message:
+ authentication denied: Can’t contact LDAP serveruser user is not
authenticated or not authorized
The issue can also be confirmed by using the setauthparam command to set the parameter
ldap-reqcert to 0 and verifying that authentication succeeds.
To allow users to authenticate while also requiring a certificate with SSL, recreate the certificate
used by the LDAP or Active Directory server and sign it with SHA. A less secure option is to configure
LDAP authentication with SSL but not require a valid certificate by using the setauthparam
command to set the ldap-reqcert parameter to 0.
A more definitive method of confirming that the issue is with the certificate is by using the gnutls-cli
command (available for most Linux distributions) to display certificate information. For example,
if the LDAP server is called ldap-server.example.com and its certificate is in the file ca.cert, this
command checks the certificate:
% gnutls-cli -p 636 --x509cafile ca.cert ldap-server.example.com
If the certificate is signed with MD5 the output includes:
- The hostname in the certificate matches ‘ldap-server.example.com’.
nl

- Peer’s certificate chain uses insecure algorithm

nl

- Peer’s certificate is NOT trusted

Remote Copy Link Speeds

When setting link speeds for Remote Copy operations using the controlport command speed
setting, only the 1000Mbps link speed option should be used. Using the 10Mbps and 100Mbps
link speed options may result in negotiation issues. Support for setting the interface speed to 10Mbps
and 100MBps will be removed in a future release.

Known Issues with the InForm OS

32-Bit Libraries for 64-Bit Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.1 (Bug 63679)
The 64-bit OS version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.1 (RHEL) may require the installation of
compatible 32-bit libraries prior to installing this CLI client patch. The CLI installer is a 32-bit linux
binary created by InstallAnywhere, which assumes the necessary 32-bit compatibility libraries are
installed. Listed below are two Workaround options:
• Workaround — During the RHEL 6.1 64-bit system installation, include the Compatibility
Libraries when you customize the software to be installed on the system.
• Workaround — If the RHEL 6.1 64-bit system is already installed and the 32-bit libraries were
not included, then manually install the following 32-bit rpm packages: glibc, libXext and
libXtst. The rpm packages can be found on the RHEL install CD in the Packages directory.
32-Bit Library Example:

4Gb/s 2-Port adapter Issue

The 4Gb/s 2-port Fibre Channel Adapter firmware does not detect a loss of sync when the host
reboots and has older adapters (ex: QLA2342) that do not turn off the laser.
• Workaround - None.

Downgrade Issues
The following are downgrade issues for InForm OS release 3.1.1.

Issues Preventing Downgrades from InForm OS release 3.1.1 to InForm OS release 2.3.1
These issues will prevent an HP 3PAR Storage System from downgrading from InForm OS release
3.1.1 to InForm OS release 2.3.1.
• Read/Write snapshots with zero detect policy - InForm OS 2.3.1 I/O code paths do not support
Read/Write snapshots on which zero detect or write-same-zero driven space optimization
has been performed. Before downgrading from InForm OS 3.1.1 to InForm OS 2.31, you
must remove all Read/Write snapshots that have zero detect policy enabled or that have
space optimization exception entries created by zero detect or write-same-zero.
• Users with Extended Roles - InForm OS releases prior to 3.1.1 do not support the users with
extended roles features. Before downgrading from InForm OS 3.1.1, you must remove all
users with extended roles.
• Read/Write Snapshots admitted to Remote Copy Groups - If read/write snapshots are admitted
to Remote Copy groups in InForm OS 3.1.1, downgrades to InForm OS 2.3.1 are not allowed.
Before downgrading from InForm OS 3.1.1 to InForm OS 2.3.1, ensure that all read/write
snapshots are removed from Remote Copy groups.

Issues Preventing Downgrades from InForm OS release 3.1.1 to InForm OS release 2.2.4
These issues will prevent an HP 3PAR Storage System from downgrading from InForm OS release
3.1.1 to InForm OS release 2.2.4.
• Dual SD Space - As of InForm OS 2.3.1, Thin Provisioned virtual volumes can have two Snap
Data (SD) volumes. This is not a supported feature in previous InForm releases. Prior to a
downgrade, dual SD TPVVs must be converted to single SD TPVVs by removing all of the
snapshots for those TPVVs.
• Raid Multi-Parity (MP) - InForm OS releases prior to 2.3.1 do not support Raid MP; therefore,
any Raid MP Logical Disks (LDs) must be tuned to a supported RAID type or removed prior to
downgrade.
• SD Reclaim Space - SD Reclamation is not supported by previous InForm OS releases. Prior
to a downgrade, SD volumes that has its space reclaimed must be removed. If that SD is used
by snapshots only, then all of its snapshots must be deleted so that SD can be freed. If that
SD space is used by the TPVV itself, then that TPVV would need to be copied over to a new
single SD TPVV. After the copy operation completed, the original TPVV can be removed.
• 256 Read/Write Snapshots - As of InForm OS 2.3.1, the number of read/write snapshots was
increased to 256 per virtual volume. Previous releases supported a smaller maximum number
of read/write snapshots per virtual volume. A downgrade will be prevented if any virtual
volume has more read/write snapshots than the maximum supported on the previous release.
When enough snapshots have been removed to meet this criterion the downgrade is allowed.
• Multiple Read/Write Snapshots per Read-Only Snapshot - As of InForm OS 2.3.1, the creation
of multiple read/write snapshots per read-only snapshot is permitted. Previous releases

Known Issues with the InForm OS 17

supported a single read/write snapshot per read-only snapshot. A downgrade will be prevented
if any read-only snapshot has more than one read/write snapshot. Once enough read/write
snapshots have been removed to meet this criteria, the downgrade is allowed.
• Synchronous Long Distance Remote Copy - If there are Remote Copy groups configured with
multiple targets, those groups must be removed or reduced to a single target before a
downgrade is allowed.
• 16 TB Support - Virtual volumes larger than the maximum size supported in a previous release
must be removed before a downgrade is allowed.
• Multiple Remote Copy Links per Node - As of InForm OS release 2.3.1, multiple Remote Copy
links are allowed to be configured on a individual node. Previous releases only allowed a
single link per node. Before downgrading, ensure that additional Remote Copy links are
dismissed to ensure a valid configuration for the downgrade. A check is run prior to downgrade
to validate the existing Remote Copy link configuration.

Issues Causing a Change to the InForm Configuration

The following issue causes a change to the InForm configuration when downgrading from InForm
OS release 3.1.1.
• Host Personas - If a system running InForm OS release 3.1.1 is downgraded, host persona
fields are cleared and the old port persona settings resume effect. However, these settings are
not kept up-to-date nor are they converted back on downgrade, so they will not reflect any
configuration changes made since loading 3.1.1. On a system which only ran 3.1.1, there
will be no port persona settings to revert to.
Prior to the downgrade, a check is run to ensure the system can run in the downgraded state.
If host persona specific configurations are detected, a message is issued. This condition will
need to be resolved before the downgrade is permitted. One example of this would be different
host persona settings sharing a port which can not be supported via port personas.

Running Recovery Manager and Remote Copy (from outside of Recovery Manager)
at the Same Time is not Supported
To synchronize Recovery Manager snapshot data from the production site to secondary site,
Recovery Manager makes direct programmatic calls to the 3PAR Remote Copy product to perform
the background synchronization. When Recovery Manager is doing Application Consistent Remote
Syncs using Remote Copy in Asynchronous Periodic Mode, it is not required to setup the periodic
resync time for the Remote Copy groups. Setting up periodic resync time for Remote Copy groups
when recovery manager is active could disrupt the operation of Recovery Manager.
• Workaround:
Remote Copy can support the mixture of Recovery Manager snapshots and Remote Copy snapshots
(outside of Recovery Manager) if the following procedure is followed:
Inside the Recovery Manager Windows scheduler script:
1. Set the Remote Copy period to 0.
2. Verify Remote Copy SyncStatus as "Synced".
3. Execute Recovery Manager snapshot creation for Remote Copy.
4. Wait for SyncStatus to be completed and Recovery Manager to take snapshot of secondary
volumes.
5. Recovery Manger will monitor the SyncStatus to be "Synced" every 120 seconds as default
then issue snapshot creation of secondary volumes.

18 HP 3PAR InForm OS Release Notes

6. Reset Remote Copy period to the sync period it was at prior to setting to 0 in step 1.

WARNING! Steps 2 and 4 are critical to ensure Recover Manager-created snapshots and
Remote Copy-created snapshots do not interfere with each other.

Windows 2003 Pop-Up

Client machines running the Windows 2003 operating systems receive an unknown device pop-up
from Windows Plug and Play security checking when connecting to a 2.3.1 InServ Storage Server
system.
• Workaround - To avoid this device pop-up message you can install the NULL driver for 3PAR
SCSI Enclosure Service device located on DCS.

Cage Loop Down Alert is not Auto-Recovered (Bug 40274)

There are certain conditions during which a drive cage loop missing alert may not be auto-resolved
even though the drive cage loop comes back.
• Workaround - Once it has been verified that the alert is indeed invalid, check showcage -d
and showpd to verify the loop is present. The alert can be removed by removealert or
setalert.

System Manager Could Fail During Rolling Upgrade if Remote Copy Groups Running
(Bug 40867)
When creating snapshots during the shutdown process there is a known race condition that may
result in a system manager crash. Therefore, the user is no longer permitted to manually take
snapshots during this process. However, this is not the case with snapshots that are taken when a
synchronous remote copy group is stopped.
During a rolling upgrade synchronous groups are normally not stopped. However, if there is a
target failure during the process any associated groups will automatically be stopped, and if the
group is synchronous a snapshot for each volume in the group will be taken. This leaves the system
open to hitting the race condition described above.
• Workaround - Stop all remote copy groups before starting a rolling upgrade.

No Explicit Way to Reset the Default Value for Tunelinks (Bug 43579)
The setrcopytargettunelinks command can be used to adjust the performance value for
the target's links using the <bandwidth> and <latency> specifiers. After using this command,
there is no explicit way for the user to reset the tuning parameters back to the default value.
• Workaround - Reset the parameter to the default value by reissuing tunelinks with
bandwidth=128000 (or higher) and latency=100.

Remote Copy Volumes go Stale Due to Lack of Adm Space (Bug 44963)
The default grow value of 64 GB might be insufficient for volumes which are in Remote Copy
groups. The reason is Remote Copy relies on taking snapshots during the initial sync phase and

Known Issues with the InForm OS 19

also during the resync periods. The snapshots end up using administrator space depending on the
IOPS and throughput load on the Remote Copy volumes.
• Workaround - Use setcpg -sdgs <increment_value> <volume_name> to increase
the default grow increment. The recommended value is 96 GB.

controlport Configuration Gives Warning after Being Taken Offline (Bug 44989)
Using the -f option with controlport config, the system responded with a confirmation
request, or refused to force the mode change.
• Workaround - If the -f flag was used and the system still prompts for confirmation, respond
to the prompt. If there are other messages, they need to be resolved (e.g. take port offline),
or possibly reissue the command.

showtask for updatevv Displays Incorrect Completion Time (Bug 46328)

showtask for updatevv displays the incorrect completion time.
• Workaround - In these cases updatevv did complete for all virtual volumes in the set, however
the completion time is incorrect. The actual completion time can found by gathering the creation
time of the new snapshots.

Tasks Become Active after a Failed Upgrade (Bug 46418)

There are certain situations after a failed upgrade when tasks that were scheduled and suspended
become active.
• Workaround - After the failed upgrade, use the showsched command to determine which
scheduled tasks need to be suspended again. Use the setsched -suspend
<schedule_name> command.

Remote Copy: Long Waits for Remote Copy Commands to Return Data
When using a 2-node secondary system for a 2-to-1 Remote Copy configuration, commands can
take quite some time to return on a busy system. For this reason, the secondary Remote Copy
system cannot be used as a standalone system. Commands such as showrcopy and showvv
have been observed to take between 2 and 8 minutes to return data. Remote Copy operations are
not impacted, however during the time of a DR restore, where multiple resyncs to different targets
could be taking place, commands can take a significant amount of time to execute.

IMC Crashes during Rolling Upgrade (Bug 46452)

The IMC receives a fatal error when a rolling upgrade is performed on the HP 3PAR Storage
System.
• Workaround - When performing an HP 3PAR Storage System rolling upgrade, it is
recommended that all IMC instances that are connected to that HP 3PAR Storage System be
shutdown.

Bug ID Item Description

55785 showvv -cpg command In previous releases, the showvv -cpg command only listed the base
enhancement volumes belonging to a CPG. This has been modified so that both the
snapshots and the base volumes belonging to a CPG are listed.

55804 showdate and stats In some cases, if a valid time zone was provided using the InForm OS CLI
commands time stamps command settz and a failure occurred during the propagation of the
mismatch time zone across appropriate directories in the storage system, it was
possible that showdate and stats commands time stamps did not match.
The piece of code handling the time zone propagation did not report errors
back to upper layers (which always assumed the time zone change was
successful). The code has been updated to issue a notification if the time
zone propagation fails.

57065 Updated root jail directory The SSH interface to the InForm OS CLI client code did not properly
access for Secure Shell (SSH) construct a changed root jail for the user signing on. This could allow an
users unprivileged SSH CLI user to access files outside the changed root. The
unprivileged user could exploit this flaw by examining world readable
files throughout the node file system. A fix has been implemented that
prevent CLI SSH users from accessing files outside of the chroot jail.

59159 sasl binding and base When binding is set to sasl, the base of the search is now set to the root
search setting to match of the directory tree if a common container is not found in the directory

throttling results in controller very large number of I/O requests to the storage system that could result

requests to send heartbeat messages in a timely manner. This has been
fixed by sending back a SCSI QFULL error condition to a newly received
command on an iSCSI port when the number of pending commands on
the port has reached a predetermined limit.

59609 Needs to use the remote CLI If the storage system has a large configuration (for example, many virtual

big exit: There is not enough memory to run this command on the system.
Please use the CLI remote client to run it. If this is the case, run the command

60356 setvv -snp_cpg on virtual Using setvv -snp_cpg on virtual volumes relying on shared logical

63602 Potential node panics during To avoid potential node panics during a Remote Copy resync operation,
resync operation the startrcopygroup -nosync <grp> command will now return a
failure if the RC group has already started.

Limitations of the InForm OS CLI

stat/hist commands could exit SSH sessions on large configuration systems.
A new CLI environment variable <histanum> has been added for the stat/hist commands. The
value of <histanum> is used to determine how many records to show at a time for stat/hist
commands. If it is set to 0, then the stat/hist commands will show 5000 records at a time. The
sorting of the records is limited to the <histanum> records. For example, if <histanum> is set to
1000, then the sorting will be for every 1000 records of the output.

26 HP 3PAR InForm OS CLI Release Notes

To set the value of <histanum>, use the showclienv and setclienv commands.
If the system configuration is large and <histanum> is set to be more than 5000, then it is possible
that a SSH session cannot run the command because of memory limit. In that case, the stat/hist
commands (statvv, histvv, statvlun, histvlun, statch, histch, statld, histld)
will exit with error message There is not enough memory to run this command on the system. Please
use the CLI remote client to run it. Exiting the command. In this case, run the command from a
remote CLI session.

tunepd may not be able to run in a SSH session.

If a system configuration is large, tunepd may not be able to run in the SSH session because of
the memory limit. It will exit with the error message There is not enough memory to run this command
on the system. Please use the CLI remote client to run it. Exiting the command. In this case, run the
command from a remote CLI session.

statvlun exits if there is insufficient memory to run an SSH session

If the storage system has too many VLUNs, statvlun could run out of memory in an SSH session.
In this case, it will return the following error message and exit: There is not enough memory to run
this command on the system. Please use the CLI remote client to run it. In this case, run the command
from the remote InForm OS CLI client.

Maximum number of virtual copies per volume decreased

For the createsv and creategroupsv commands, a maximum of 500 virtual copies per volume
are allowed; previously, a maximum of 2048 virtual copies per volume were allowed.

45413 Integer arguments to CLI The CLI shell is a TCL-based shell, as such it parses integers with leading
commands with leading 0 0 (zero) as octal numbers, just like many other languages and shells (bash,
(zeros) are treated as octal perl, etc). Consequently, integer arguments passed to the CLI commands
numbers. are also treated as octal numbers if they have a leading 0.
Workaround: If you do not wish for integers to be treated as octal integers,
do not use leading zeros.

46372 Drive cage displays do not The showcage -sfp command shows the sfp state as OK, Degraded,

Workaround: If showcage –sfp shows an SFP as OK, try using
showcage –sfp –d <cage_name>. If the Qualified field shows No,
then it is an unqualified SFP and its state should be deemed as Degraded.

static groups 3PAR_AO-map, 3PAR_RM-map) supersedes static groups (super-map,

Workaround: If there are multiple group matches, the first match determines
the user’s role.
