Year 7 Mathematics - Chapter: Percentage

1. Introduction to Percentages:

- 'Percent' means 'per hundred'.

- The symbol for percent is %.

- Example: 50% means 50 out of 100.

2. Converting Between Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages:

- Fraction to Percentage: Multiply by 100 and add %.

Example: 3/4 = 0.75 = 75%

- Decimal to Percentage: Multiply by 100.

Example: 0.2 = 20%

- Percentage to Decimal: Divide by 100.

Example: 25% = 0.25

3. Finding Percentage of a Quantity:

- Formula: (Percentage × Total) ÷ 100

Example: 30% of 200 = (30 × 200) ÷ 100 = 60

4. Percentage Increase and Decrease:

- Increase: New Value = Original + (Percentage × Original ÷ 100)

- Decrease: New Value = Original - (Percentage × Original ÷ 100)

Example: Increase 200 by 10% -> 200 + (10% of 200) = 220

5. Applications of Percentages:
- Discounts in shops

- Interest rates in banks

- Exam scores

- Population statistics

6. Word Problems:

a) A jacket costing $80 is on 25% discount. What is the new price?

Discount = 25% of $80 = $20 -> New price = $80 - $20 = $60

b) A student scored 45 out of 60 in a test. What is the percentage?

= (45 ÷ 60) × 100 = 75%

7. Practice Questions:

1) Convert: 0.6 to percentage

2) Convert: 40% to decimal

3) Find 15% of 300

4) Increase 120 by 25%

5) Decrease 80 by 10%
