DISCUSSION
Module 3: NATIONAL ARTISTS IN THE CONTEMPORARY ART

By its definition, a National Artist is a Filipino who has made a significant contribution to the
development of Philippine arts in the fields of Music, Dance, Theater, Visual Arts, Literature, Film
and Architecture. A Filipino individual who should have been awarded the highest national
recognition for the arts namely, National Artist Award. In Filipino context, it is also known as the
Gawad Pambansang Alagad ng Sining.

NATIONAL ARTIST FOR VISUAL ARTS:

Fernando Amorsolo (May 30, 1892- April 24, 1972)


Amorsolo was the first National Artist in the country and was known for using the backlighting
technique in painting making his creations bright and cheerful. Renowned for his trademark
luminosity and ability to render the iconic provincial Filipina, Amorsolo's paintings usually
feature scenes in glowing rural landscapes--- such as farmers ankle-deep in rice fields, women in
colorful baro't sayas sorting through mangoes, and vibrant society portraits.

Napoleon "Billy" Veloso Abueva (January 26, 1930 – February 16, 2018)
He was recognized as the Father of Modern Philippine Sculpture. His modernist approach
can be seen in his exploration of various media such as molave, acacia, langka, ipil, kamagong,
palm, adobe, cement, marble, bronze, iron, brass, among others.

Guillermo Estrella Tolentino (July 24, 1890 – July 12, 1976)


He is hailed as the "Father of Philippine Arts." He sculpted the University of the Philippines' most
recognizable emblem, the UP Oblation, as well as the Bonifacio Monument in Caloocan City.

NATIONAL ARTIST FOR ARCHITECTURE:

Juan Nakpil (May 26, 1899 – May 7, 1986)


Nakpil was a Filipino architect. He was known for his Philippine Architecture. Juan has
integrated strength, function and beauty in the buildings that are the country’s heritage today.

Leandro V. Locsin (August 15, 1928- November 15, 1994)


His designs usually feature themes of floating volume and a mix of both eastern and western
aesthetics.

Ildefonso Paez Santos Jr.,


popularly known simply as "IP Santos", was a Filipino architect who was known for being the
"Father of Philippine Landscape Architecture." He was recognized as a National Artist of the
Philippines in the field of Architecture in 2006

NATIONAL ARTIST FOR LITERATURE:

Carlos Quirino (November 4, 1910- May 20, 1999)


He is the first and so far, the only National Artist for Historical Literature and was also known for
writing “The Great Malayan,” which is considered to be one of the earliest biographies of Jose
Rizal.

Fransisco Arcellana (September 8, 1916- August 1, 2002)


Arcellana is a writer, poet, essayist, critic, journalist and teacher who is recognized as one of the
pioneers in writing modern Filipino short stories in English. He also originated the lyrical prose-
poetic from in writing short stories.

Nicomedes Márquez Joaquín (1917–2004)
Nick Joaquin was a Filipino writer and journalist best known for his short stories and novels in
the English language. Unlike Rizal and Recto, whose works were written in Spanish, Joaquin's
major works were written in English despite being a native Spanish speaker.

NATIONAL AERTISR FRO DANCE, MUSIC, FILM AND THEATER\

Cinema/Film
Lino Brocka (April 3, 1939- May 22, 1991)
Catalino “Lino” Ortiz Brocka is recognized for his films which explore the lives of people in the
marginalized sectors. Brocka also directed for theater organizations such as Philippine
Educational Theater Association (PETA) and the concerned artists of the Philippines. (CAP)

Dance
Francisca Reyes Aquino (March 9, 1899- November 21, 1983)
She was known for her research on Philippine folk dances, which later resulted in a thesis
entitled “Philippine Folk Dances and Games”. It was distributed to public and private schools.

Music
Antonino Buenaventura (May 4, 1904- January 25, 1996)
He was known for his marches including the “Triumphal March”, “March History Fantasy,
“Echoes from the Philippines”. and Ode to Freedom”. He was a conductor. The Philippine Army
Band. He wrote compositions for solo instruments, symphonic and orchestral works, which are
based on Philippine folksongs
