AGR105:FUNDAMENTALS OF AGRONOMY
L:3 T:0 P:2 Credits:4
Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to
CO1 :: recall the meaning and scope of agronomy and the basic concepts related to seed sowing,
tillage, and plant nutrients
CO2 :: explain the relationship between crop density, crop geometries, and plant growth, as well
as the importance of weed management and herbicides
CO3 :: apply principles of nutrient use efficiency, irrigation scheduling, and crop rotation in
practical crop management scenarios
CO4 :: analyze the soil-plant-water relationship, water use efficiency, and the impact of weeds on
crop competition and growth
CO5 :: evaluate crop management technologies in problematic areas and assess the effectiveness
of various weed management strategies and herbicide use in different cropping systems
Unit I
Introduction to agronomy : meaning and scope of agronomy, seed and different methods of
sowing, crop density and different crop geometries, tillage and tilth
Unit II
Crop nutrition : essential plant nutrients and their role in plant growth, manures and fertilizers,
classification of manures and fertilizers, nutrient use efficiency
Unit III
Soil-plant- water relationship : water resources and quality of irrigation water, soil plant water
relationship, water use efficiency and water-logging, irrigation scheduling criteria and methods
Unit IV
Weed and its classification : weed definitions and importance of weeds, classification of weeds,
crop-weed competition, principles and methods of weed management
Unit V
Herbicides and its classification : introduction to herbicides and its classification, herbicide
selectivity and resistance, allelopathy
Unit VI
Crop management technologies : growth, development and factors affecting growth and
development of crops, plant ideotypes, crop rotation and its principle, adaptation and distribution of
crops, crop management technologies in problematic areas, harvesting and threshing of crop
