QUESTION 1

1.1 A laptop has a cash price of £428 in Britain. The same laptop has a cash price of R6000 in South
Africa. The exchange rate of a £ to a R is R12, 27. Thabo buys a laptop on a hire purchase
agreement for 18% p.a. in South Africa after paying 10% deposit on a purchase price.
1.1.1 What is the value of the remaining amount if it needs to be paid off in two years? (4)
1.1.2 Calculate the monthly instalment if equal monthly instalments are required (2)
1.1.3 Calculate the total amount paid by Thabo and convert it to £ (4)

1.2 Thabo has R4250, he decides to invest the money in a bank that offers interest of 12, 25% p. a
compounded annually. The cost of the laptop is expected to be R8160 in 2years time.
1.2.1 How much will be in Thabo’s account in two years’ time? (2)
1.2.2 Will Thabo be able to afford the laptop in two years? Use a calculation to support
your response (2)
