Summer Holidays Homework

Class 12

Conceptual Questions:
1. Write a formula to calculate magnetic field at the center of a set of concentric square coils
having N turns.
2. Explain why a current-carrying conductor produces a magnetic field. Specify direction and
shape of magnetic lines of force so produced.
3. What is the Biot-Savart Law? How is it used to calculate the magnetic field due to circular
coil?
4. Explain Ampere's Circuital Law. How will you use it to find magnetic field inside a toroid?
5. A charged particle enters into an electric field perpendicularly. What will be it's path? explain.
6. How does the magnetic Lorentz force depend on the particle's velocity and charge?
7. What is a solenoid? Why does it not has a magnetic field just outside. Explain?
8. Why do we connect a shunt across the galvanometer to convert it to an ammeter? Explain
9. Explain the concept of magnetic dipole moment. How does it relate to the magnetic field
produced by a current loop?
10. Why two magnetic lines of force do not intersect each other? Explain
11. When a charged particle enters into the magnetic field, it bounces back? Explain the reason.

Numerical/Problem-solving Questions:
12. Calculate the magnetic field at a point a distance of 10 cm from a long straight wire carrying
a current of 5 A.
13. A circular coil has 100 turns and a radius of 5 cm. If a current of 2 A flows through the coil,
what is the magnetic field at the center of the coil?
14. An electron enters a magnetic field with a velocity of 1 x 10^6 m/s and experiences a
magnetic force of 4 x 10^-15 N. If the magnetic field is 2 T, what is the charge on the electron?
15. A proton is moving in a cyclotron. If the frequency of the alternating voltage is 10^7 Hz, what
is the radius of its path when its kinetic energy is 1 MeV?
16. A solenoid has 500 turns and a length of 50 cm. If the current through the solenoid is 3 A,
what is the magnetic field inside the solenoid?
*Assertion and Reason (Q17-20)*
(a) A & R are correct and R is the correct explanation of A.
(b) A & R are correct and R is not the correct explanation of A.
(c) A is incorrect but R is correct
(d) A is correct but R is incorrect.
Answer accordingly-
17.A: A current carrying coil kept in uniform magnetic field parallel to it's plane experiences
maximum torque.
R: In the stable equilibrium position a coil carrying current orients perpendicular to the direction
of external magnetic field.
18.A: When a current carrying coil is kept kept inside a solenoid it doesn't experience any
torque.
R: The magnetic field of a coil interacts with the magnetic field of the solenoid and orients
accordingly.
Q19. A: Voltmeter is a series combination of galvanometer and a high resistance.
R: Voltmeter has a very high resistance so that it may draw a very small current.
Q20. A: A charged particle revolves in the magnetic field due magnetic Lorentz force.
R: Charged particle doesn't gain any kinetic energy due to Lorentz force.
