Unit 01, Geotech

The document contains a series of soil mechanics problems involving calculations of void ratio, dry density, degree of saturation, and specific gravity based on given parameters such as water content and specific gravity of soil particles. It includes practical scenarios like excavating earth for an embankment and determining the necessary quantities and truck loads for transportation. Each problem requires applying fundamental principles of soil mechanics to derive the required values.

Unit-01 Question

1. One cubic meter of wet soil weighs 19.80 kN. If the specific gravity of soil particles is
2.70 and water content is 11%, find the void ratio, dry density and degree of
saturation.
2. Determine the (i) Water content, (ii) Dry density, (iii) Bulk density, (iv) Void ratio
and (v) Degree of saturation.
From the following data: Sample size 3.81 cm dia. × 7.62 cm ht.
Wet weight = 1.668 N,
Oven-dry weight = 1.400 N and
Specific gravity = 2.7
3. A sample of saturated soil has a water content of 35%. The specific gravity of solids
is 2.65. Determine its void ratio, porosity, saturated unit weight and dry unit weight.
4. The mass specific gravity of a fully saturated specimen of clay having a water content
of 30.5% is 1.96. On oven drying, the mass specific gravity drops to 1.60. Calculate
the specific gravity of clay.
5. Earth is required to be excavated from borrow pits for building an embankment of
height 6m, top width 2m and side slopes 1:1. The unit weight of undisturbed soil in
wet condition is 18 kN/m3 and its natural water content is 8 percent. The dry density
required in the embankment is 20 kN/m3 with a water content of 10%. The specific
gravity of soil solids is 2.70. Estimate the quantity of earth required to be excavated in
the borrow area to construct one meter length of the embankment. If each truck has a
capacity to carry 80 kN per trip, what is the number of truck loads required per meter
length of embankment? What are the values of porosity and degree of saturation on
the embankment?
6. The density of a partially saturated soil was found to be 1.88 gm/cc. If the moisture
content and void ratio of the soil be 24.8% and 0.76 respectively, determine the
specific gravity of solids, and the degree of saturation.
