Dang 1: Agree/ Disagree

1. Many things can influence the academic achievement and

emotional ________ of a student. ________, peers have more
________ impact than teachers do.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this option?
Achievement: performance
Growth: development
It is a common belief that a student’s school performance and
emotional development are influenced more by teachers than
by classmates. However, I firmly believe that classmates are
more __________ (impacted-adj) because students are __________
(make someone eager to do st) academically by their __________
(friends) and become more mature by __________ (talk and
interact) with them.
To begin with, students are motivated by __________ (try to be
more successful) with their fellow classmates. For instance,
students usually have a desire to __________ (perform better)
their peers by __________ (show+ make clear) broader
knowledge and achieving higher scores. Competition is
especially _________ (dangerous and frightening) in the
classroom, where students study the same material in the
same place. According to a recent survey, students _________
(very great+ large quantity) stated that their peers motivated
them to study more than their teachers. This is because
competition played a _________ (important) role in their
motivation. This study offers strong proof that classmates
__________ (adv) affect a student’s academic achievement.
On top of that, socializing at school allows children to grow
emotionally through ________ relationships (make a special
effort to establish and develop it) with peers. Students spend a
large amount of their time in the classroom. Classmates help
them grow emotionally by providing them with new ideas,
beliefs, and experiences/ This can help students develop a
better ability to control their emotions and ________ (like and
be friendly to each other) with others. One study, for example,
show that ________ (teenager) learn how to control their
tempers and ________ (act/work together) with others mostly by
interacting with their friends at school. This demonstrates how
important relationships with classmates are for a child’s
emotional development.
To sum up, classmates create scholarly competition and help
students mature. For these reasons, it is clear that a student
S academic achievement and interpersonal development are
________ more by peers than by educators.
2. The government should sometimes infringe on people’s
freedom for the security of society.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this
statement?
It is a common belief that the idea of ________ upon individual
liberties is ________. (morally very bad) However, I firmly
believe that one’s freedom should be ________ by the
goverment when the ________ purpose is to prevent ________
dangers and to ________ that safety regualtions are being
________.
To begin with, the infringement of people’s liberties can be
________ when protecting people from danger is the ________
priority. Given the recent increase in ________ throughout the
world, ________ must be taken to prevent potential attacks,
such as those committed by ________. For example/ intance,
in order to prevent ________ or the transport of ________
materials, airports around the world conduct ________
_____people and their ________. Even though this is ________
(be involved in a situation where you don’t want) and a
violation of personal space, it is necessary to protect
everyone from harm. Therefore, when this is the intention,
government ________ and public ________ should have the
right to carry out searches and trespass on one’s privacy
(unfairly use someone’s...)
On top of that, the government can ________ (break) an
individual’s right to freedom in order to make sure that
safety ________ are followed.Certain jobs can ________
innocent people’s lives when employees do not act safely
and ________. In this regard, it is important to ________ that
these employees follow safety rules even if their rights are
infringed upon during the process. Take the example of
school bus drivers and pilots. If they are not functioning at
full capacity, they will not be able to perform their tasks
safely. Thus, it is acceptable to make them ________ random
________ tests to ensure they are healthy and capable. This is
necessary to ________ that these people are not putting the
lives of others in ________.
In conclusion/ To sum up, intruding on people’s freedom is
________ (unable to avoid/ prevent) if governments are to
protect society from ________ and make sure that individuals
are following the necessary rules. For those reasons,
imposing on individual freedom is sometimes necessary.
3. Some peole claim that the media has a negative influence
on comtemporary society. They think that there is very
little tolerance for new ideas becasue of its impact.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
It is a common belief that the media has affected society
________ a negative way and made our once diverse world
too ________ (the same). However, I firmly believe that
culture has been ________ (make something varied and
different) by the positive influence of media because it has
broadened people’s overall ________ (person’s way of
understanding and thinking about st/sb) and made society
more interesting.
To begin with, the media has helped develop
__________(willing to accept) for different ways of thinking. In
the past, may people were not aware of the traditions and
beliefs of other societies. However, we now know so much
more about the world because of various types of media. For
example, people now have ________ (a method of getting
near to a place/ a person) to movies and documentaries that
________ (represent/ show st in a picture or a story) ways of
life in different countries. This has led not to a simplification
of cultures but to a more accepting _______ _ (feeling/ opinion
toward st/sb) towards the ideas and values of people from
other ________(family experience). This creates a more
________(varied/ different) and open-________ (willing to
consider ideas/opinions that are new/different from your
own) society.
On top of that, the media has made culture more diverse by
helping to develop new and original trends in society. It acts
as a ________ (an ability to do many different things/ adjust to
new conditions) medium that allows art and identify to come
together to become more ________ (new and different) and
modern. By way of example, take street fashion in Japan.
After seeing a lot of American culture depicted on TV,
Japanese teens merged their fashions with those popular in
America. As a result, a new type of clothing style that
included elements from both cultures was born. This
illustrates how the media can allow distinct and creative
trends to ________(appear, become known).
To sum up, the media has been a ______(physical power) for
good by opening the world up to new ideas and making
culture more exciting. For these reasons, the media’s effect
on society has been positive _____than negative.
4. The government should _________ (officially force a rule,
tax... to be obeyed) a fee on drivers who use their
vehicles during ___hour (the busy part of the day) to help
______ (reduce an amount) air pollution from ___ (the
waste gas) fumes. To what extent do you agree or
disagree?

It is a common belief that drivers should not be charged for

using their vehicles during rush hour, even though it
contributes to air pollution. However, I firmly believe that
imposing a fee would do a lot of good because it could
reduce traffic and help protect the envionment.
To be gin with, ________ (put a plan into action) a rush hour
fee would ____ (make less) traffic ______ (situation a place is
too blocked/crowed= jam) ______ (reduce) some of the
pollution in the atmosphere. Charging people would make
them less likely to drive to work. Instead, they would opt to
use _______ (other choices) means of transportation. This is
important because being stuck in traffic also adds
significantly to the ____ (act of sending out gas, heat...) of
pollutants. Moreover, enforcing a fee is not only simple, but
it works well. In London, for example, the government
introduced a congestion fee several years ago. As a result,
many people started to carpool, walk, or use public
transportation rather than drive to work. Fewer cars on the
road eased traffic congestion, and pollution levels have been
going down ever since.
On top of that, the ____ (income that goverment/ company
receive regularly) from those charge can be used to fund
environmentally friendly projects. Governments would be
able to ____ (use in an effective way) the tax money to make
their cities greener. In Stockholm, for instance, the city ____
(people who manage íts business and operations) has been
able to plant trees and flowers alongside roads with the
funds from a rush hour regulation. This ____ (plants in
general) adds to the beauty of the landscape, but more
importantly, it improves the air quality overall. In effect, tax
revenues from a rush hour fee can do much to ____ (make
less severe) the polluted air.
To sum up, a small fee for rush-hour motorists would lighten
traffic and help cities maintain a healthy and clean
environment. For these reasons, charging such drivers would
be _____ (useful/good) to the planet and to society.

5. It is important to be concerned about international events,

even if those events have no direct impact on our lives. To
what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is a common belief that it is not necessary to be aware of

world events as long as they are unlikely to directly impact
our lives. However, I firmly believe that we should keep up
with events occurring in other countries. This is because
knowledge of international events ___ (give permission)
nations to provide support to other countries and even ___
____ ____ (suggest/ think an idea/plan) solutions to their own
problems.
To begin with, being concerned about international events
____ (make so able to do st) people to help other citizens of
the world. Humanitarian crises, natural disasters and
conflicts are, unfortunately, frequent occurrences in many
places around the globe. By paying attention to these
events, it is possible to share resources to ___ (help) others
in times of need. For instance, the 2008 earthquake in
Sichuan, China, caused a lot of damage. However, a quick
reaction from the international community helped China __
(help so out of dangers) more victims than they would have
otherwise been able to save if they were working alone. Also,
many countries ___ (give money to help a
person/organization) large amounts of money to make
repairs throughout the region. This aid made it easier for
local people to deal with the tragedy.
On top of that, ___ ___ _____ (do whatever is necessary to stay
level/ equal with so/st) world events leads to a better
understanding of how to deal with problems that could occur in
our own society. Many societites face similar issues, and
looking to see how other states failed or _____ can provide
______ (help and advice) toward better solutions. Korean, for
exaple, faced a ____ (a situation in which a dificult choice has to
be made between two diferent things you could do) when the
number of _____ (a person that travels to a different country or
place, often in order to find work) workers increased rapidly.
Some of them suffered from poor treatment, while others
remained in the country without a visa. After looking at
international examples from countries like the UK and
Germany, which have experienced a similar problem in the
past, the Korean government was able to introduce laws to
protect the rights of migrant workers while also reducing the
number who _______ (stay longer in a place than you are
allowed/wanted) illegally.
To sum up, understanding what is occurring in other countries
makes it possible to help others and provides useful
information that can be used to solve problems at home. For
these reasons, it is important to ________ (continue to have) an
interest in events occurring in other countries.
