1. Can you think of other examples where mathematics helps us in our everyday
lives?

Cooking & baking: Mathematics is used to manage money such as saving, spending and calculating
interest.

Banking : Mathematics is used to manage money such as saving, spending and

calculating interest.

Travelling : Mathematics is used to measure the distance, time and speed.

Shopping: To calculate the total cost of an item, finding discount and comparing
prices.

Scientific Experiments: Mathematics helps scientists to conduct experiments , analyse data

and make decisions.

Economy: Mathematics is used in financial modelling, economic forecasting , and statistical

analysis.

Democracy: Mathematics helps in analysing voting patterns.

Building Structures: Engineers use Mathematics to design and construct buildings, bridges
and other structures to ensure that they are safe and stable.

Figure it Out: (Page5-6)

HW:
Q1
2. Why are 1, 3, 6, 10, 15, … called triangular numbers? Why are 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, … called square
numbers or squares? Why are 1, 8, 27, 64, 125, … called cubes?

ANS:

1, 3, 6, 10, 15, … are called triangular numbers because they can be arranged to form an
equilateral triangle.

Ex:

1, 4, 9, 16, 25, … are called square numbers because they can be arranged in the form of a
perfect square shapes.

Ex:

1, 8, 27, 64, 125, … are called cubes because they can form a perfect cubes with dot.

Ex:

3. You will have noticed that 36 is both a triangular number and a square number! That is, 36 dots
can be arranged perfectly both in a triangle and in a square. Make pictures in your notebook
illustrating this! This shows that the same number can be represented differently, and play
different roles, depending on the context. Try representing some other numbers pictorially in
different ways!

Ans:
i) 36 can be shown pictorially as follows:

ii) Pictorial representation of 10 can be shown as follows:

iii) Pictorial representation of 10 can be shown as follows:

16

4. What would you call the following sequence of numbers?

That’s right, they are called hexagonal numbers! Draw these in your notebook. What is the next
number in the sequence?

Sol:

1st Number= 1
2nd Number = 7 = 1st Number + (6x1)
= 1+6 = 7

3rd Number = 19 = 2nd Number + (6x2)

= 7 + 12 = 19

4th Number = 37 = 3rd Number + (6x3)

= 19 + 18= 37

5th Number = 61 = 4th Number + (6x4)

= 37 + 24 = 61

Hence the next number in the sequence is 61.
