Day 1: Introduction to Gender Studies - CSS Preparation Notes
1. What is Gender Studies?
Gender Studies is an interdisciplinary academic field that explores how gender identity and roles are
socially constructed and how these constructions affect power, institutions, development, and
societal norms. It studies all genders and promotes gender equity.
Example:
In Pakistan, the 2018 Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act is a landmark that recognizes
gender identities beyond the binary of male/female.
2. Difference between Gender Studies and Women Studies:
| Gender Studies | Women Studies |
|---------------------------------------------|-----------------------------------------|
| Studies all genders | Primarily focuses on women |
| Interdisciplinary (law, sociology, media) | Feminist theory and women's rights |
| Inclusive of men, queer, non-binary | Women's historical oppression |
| Broader scope | Rooted in 1970s feminist movements |
3. Multi-disciplinary Nature:
Gender Studies integrates:
- Sociology (gender roles & norms)
- Law (gender rights and policies)
- Psychology (identity development)
- Political Science (governance and representation)
- History (movements and societal changes)
- Media Studies (gender in media and ads)
Example: Malala Yousafzai's advocacy involves education rights, legal empowerment, and
international politics.
4. Autonomy vs. Integration Debate:
- Autonomy: Gender Studies should be a separate field with distinct departments.
- Integration: Gender issues should be part of all social sciences and educational fields.
Pakistani Example: Some universities have Gender Studies as a department, while others include
gender concepts across subjects.
5. Status of Gender Studies in Pakistan:
- Introduced in the late 1990s.
- Offered at: QAU, Punjab University, University of Karachi, etc.
- Challenges: Cultural resistance, insufficient trained faculty.
- Support from NGOs: Aurat Foundation, Shirkat Gah.
Quick Practice Questions:
1. Define Gender Studies in your own words.
