TITLE: Design and Implementation of solar photovoltaic water pumping system
for small scale agriculture irrigation.
OBJECTIVE: To design an effective and cost-efficient solar powered water pump-
ing system that meets the daily irrigation needs of a 8 acre agricultural farm using
renewable solar energy.
COMPONENTS DETAILS
Table 1: Application Parameters and Component Specifications
Application Parameters Component Specifications
Application: Irrigation for 8-acre 1. Solar Panel: 415W × 28, Mono
farm PERC
Daily Water Requirement: 40,000 2. Pump (Motor): 10.7 HP, sub-
liters/day mersible, 8kW
Source: Borewell or open well 3. Voltage range of Controller:
575–850 V DC input
Irrigation Method: Pipe irrigation 4. Inverter: MPPT AC inverter,
8000W, efficiency 98%
Operation Mode: Automatic based 5. Tank: 50000-liter overhead tank
on tank level
Location: Ipur, Palnadu district, AP, 6. Piping: 54 mm PE50 pipe
India
SYSTEM DESIGN: The system is designed to irrigate 8 acres of agricultural land
with a daily requirement of 40,000 liters. A submersible pump rated at 10.7 HP (8 kW)
is used to pump water from a borewell or open well.
Energy and PV Sizing Calculations
1. Daily Water Requirement: Q = 40,000 liters/day = 40 m3 /day
2. Total Dynamic Head (TDH): Assuming an average head of 112meters, H =
108 m
Q×H×g
3. Hydraulic Energy Required per day: Eh = ηm ×3600
Where:
• Q = 40 m3 /day
• H = 112 m (assumed)
• g = 9.81 m/s2
• ηm = motor + pump efficiency (assume 65% or 0.65)
Eh = 40×112×9.81
0.65×3600
= 18.78 kW h/day(approx)
4. Energy Input to Motor: Accounting for system losses and actual motor size (8
kW for 2 hrs/day):
Emotor = 8 kW × 2 hours/day = 16 kW h/day
5.Solar PV Panel Sizing: The required panel size is calculated using the formula:
Panel Size (kW) = Energy Required (kWh/day) SunlightHours×SystemEf f iciency
Substituting the known values:
Panel Size = 16 5×0.65= 16 =4.92 kW
3.25
Hence, the minimum required solar panel capacity is approximately 4.92 kW.
6. PV Panel Specification:
Each panel = 415W
Number of Panels = 3200
415≈7.7⇒8 panels (minimum)
But system uses 28 panels to:
• Account for seasonal variations, inverter losses, panel aging
• Operate motor at full capacity and support automation
7. Inverter and Efficiency:
• Inverter: MPPT AC inverter, 8000W
• Efficiency: 98%
• Motor Efficiency: Assumed at 85%
SIMULATION DESIGN: The simulation section outlines the detailed analysis
and results of the solar water pumping system using PVsyst. The system is designed to
meet the daily irrigation requirement of 40,000 liters with an installed capacity of 11.62
kW system power, utilizing 28 PV modules. The panels are configured at a tilt of 31.5°,
optimized for maximum solar exposure at the given site coordinates in Ipuru, India.
The simulation considers various factors, including shading, temperature losses, and
system efficiency, achieving a total system efficiency of 80 percent. The pump, powered
by an 8 kW AC motor, operates efficiently to deliver water with a specific energy con-
sumption of 18.78kWh/day.
A detailed loss diagram highlights energy losses due to temperature, wiring, and
conversion, resulting in 9,854 kWh of usable energy at the pump. The system successfully
meets 93.8 percent of the annual water demand, with minimal water shortfall. This robust
design ensures reliability, accounting for variations in weather and system performance
over time.
Advanced MPPT inverters ensure optimal energy utilization, while unused energy is
limited to 26.6 percent, primarily when the storage tank reaches capacity. The simulation
validates the system’s capability to support automated irrigation, reducing dependency
on conventional power sources while promoting sustainability.

Conclusion: The solar-powered water pumping system is a sustainable and efficient
solution tailored to meet the irrigation needs of 40,000 liters daily. With an installed
capacity of 11.62 kW system power and a high-efficiency AC motor-driven pump, the
system operates with a 80 percent overall efficiency. The PV modules are optimally de-
signed and oriented, ensuring reliable performance throughout the year. The simulation
results demonstrate the system’s ability to deliver 93.8 percent of the required water,
with minimal shortfall and energy wastage. The project showcases the potential of re-
newable energy in reducing dependence on conventional power, supporting environmental
conservation, and promoting cost savings over time.
