Playscript Writing Structure

●​ Title
●​ Playwright
○​ name of the writer of a play.
●​ Character List / Dramatis Personae
○​ includes a brief description of each character’s personality traits.
●​ Scene Heading
○​ explanation of where the scene takes place.
●​ Stage Directions
○​ includes short descriptions of each scene’s setting, lighting, character
actions, etc.
●​ Dialogue
○​ introduced with a colon – no speech marks.
●​ Parentheticals
○​ tone of voice or emotion actors/actresses must use when reading the
dialogue.

Key Features of a Play Script


●​ Remember:
○​ Character names should be ALL CAPS, it is acceptable if you do not
write it in ALL CAPS but it will be preferable to do so.
○​ Start a new line for each speaker.
