Playscript Writing Structure
● Title
● Playwright
○ name of the writer of a play.
● Character List / Dramatis Personae
○ includes a brief description of each character’s personality traits.
● Scene Heading
○ explanation of where the scene takes place.
● Stage Directions
○ includes short descriptions of each scene’s setting, lighting, character
actions, etc.
● Dialogue
○ introduced with a colon – no speech marks.
● Parentheticals
○ tone of voice or emotion actors/actresses must use when reading the
dialogue.
Key Features of a Play Script
● Remember:
○ Character names should be ALL CAPS, it is acceptable if you do not
write it in ALL CAPS but it will be preferable to do so.
○ Start a new line for each speaker.
