1. Project Overview
This design report covers the preliminary structural design of a 20-meter simply supported
prestressed concrete I-girder bridge. The bridge will carry vehicular traffic and consists of 4
girders spaced at 2.5 meters, with a composite concrete deck.
2. Design Parameters
Parameter Value
Span Length 20 m
Girder Spacing 2.5 m
Number of Girders 4
Concrete Strength (f'c) 40 MPa
Prestressing Tendon Strength (fpu) 1860 MPa
Unit Weight of Concrete 23.5 kN/m³
Beam Cross Section 1500 mm × 500 mm
Effective Tendon Eccentricity 400 mm below neutral axis
Estimated Live Load 30 kN/m
Superimposed Dead Load (SDL) 8 kN/m
3. Section Properties
- Area (A): 0.5 m × 1.5 m = 0.75 m²
- Moment of Inertia (I): 0.140625 m⁴
- Distance to Extreme Fiber (y): 0.75 m
4. Load Calculations
4.1 Dead Load:
- Beam Self-weight: 0.75 × 23.5 = 17.625 kN/m
- SDL: 8 kN/m
4.2 Live Load: 30 kN/m
4.3 Ultimate Load: 1.2(DL + SDL) + 1.7(LL) = 82.35 kN/m
5. Maximum Moment
Mu = (w_u × L²) / 8 = (82.35 × 20²) / 8 = 4117.5 kN·m
6. Required Prestressing Force
P = Mu / e = (4117.5 × 10⁶) / 0.4 = 10.29 MN
7. Prestressing Tendon Design
- Effective Stress (fpe): 0.75 × 1860 = 1395 MPa
- Aps = P / fpe = 7380 mm²
- Number of 12.7 mm Strands: 7380 / 100 = 74 strands
8. Stress Check at Service
Top Fiber: f = 13.72 - 21.99 = -8.27 MPa
Bottom Fiber: f = 13.72 + 21.99 = 35.71 MPa
9. Shear Design (Preliminary)
Vu = (w_u × L) / 2 = (82.35 × 20) / 2 = 823.5 kN
10. Conclusion and Recommendations
The 20m prestressed I-girder bridge has been designed for highway use. With 74 strands,
eccentrically placed, the beam satisfies both ultimate and service conditions. Further
detailed analysis is recommended during final design.
