Discourse Community Analysis
In his article The Concept of Discourse Community, Professor John Swales defines what a
discourse community is, following with a list of six different points that a group must align with
in order to qualify as a discourse community. These parameters are as follows: a broadly agreed set
of common public goals, mechanisms of intercommunication among its members, the use of
participatory mechanisms primarily to provide information and feedback , use or possession of one
or more genres in the communicative furtherance of its aims , some specific lexis , and a threshold
level of members with a suitable degree of relevant content and discoursal expertise (471 473).
After identifying and describing the six points of criteria for qualification, Swales writes that even
if just one attribute is missing, it may still be enough to prevent the formation of a discourse
community (469). Keeping this in mind, it is important to identify all six points when trying to
prove the existence of a discourse community. Due to the presence of all six attributes, I am a part of
a discourse community myself. During the summer months, I work as a lifeguard at Avalon Summer
Sports Club, a local ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The use of words and phrases that outsiders may be confused by expedites conversation and
everyday tasks, and is driven by the requirements for efficient communication between experts
(Swales 473). The lexis of guards contains typical lifeguard phrases and terms for performing
rescues and maintaining a safe environment. There are also terms and phrases for objects around the
pool and tasks that must be completed. For example, there is a pool cleaner that is placed in the
water at closing and left there to vacuum the bottom of the pool overnight. The vacuum is a called a
dolphin pool cleaner and guards are often told to clean the dolphin, which often results in funny
looks from those who overhear the
Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Ovarian Axis
The hypothalamic pituitary ovarian axis (HPO) is the regulatory axis of the reproductive system.
The principal regulatory hormone for the HPO axis is gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH); this
hormone is produced by neurons of the preoptic and arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus. The
hormone is released into the hypophyseal portal system, and stimulates the pituitary follicles, which
encourages hormone secretion. This in turn encourages the secretion of estradiol and progesterone
by the ovaries.
The hypothalamus pituitary adrenal axis (HPA) is part of the stress response system, and has the
effect of changing the organism s behavior in order to increase the organism s chances to survive the
stressful situation. When stress is present, the

their desire for the product and their perception of the brand, the quality of products and additional

My Birthday Experience
Growing up i learned that i needed to mature at a younger age compared to my peers. I understood
that a low income, minority i needed to work hard to achieve my goals. One experience that
shaped my life happened this past year. My family and I were evicted from our home a couple of
days before my birthday and right before the holiday season. This made me stronger but it also
changed something inside me. I learned that life isn t a game and that i should be grateful for what
i have, because one day I could lose it all.
A couple of days before my birthday my mother asked me Que quieres hacer para tu cumpleanos? I
was thrilled to tell my mom what I had in mind for my birthday. Enthusiastically I answered I want
to invite my friends over, go to the park, and then come back home for the birthday cake. I remember
inviting all my friends over for my party. I had always been invited to my friends birthday parties
but this year I was hosting my own. My mom knew my favorite football team was the Houston
Texans and she wanted the theme show. Before my birthday she ordered a huge Houston Texans
theme cake, a Texans pinata, and decorations. I knew this day was going to be perfect, and nothing
could ruin it.
On December 19th, the day before my birthday I woke up with a feeling of enthusiasm rushing
through my body. At that point, i had told myself Wow! I ve never felt this much excitement before.
I rushed out of bed and started to text my friends, they were all super pumped about
Gloria Clors And Gestalt Therapy
In the Gloria tapes, there were three different types of therapy sessions presented in each tape. The
three types of sessions were Person Centered Therapy represented by Carl Rogers, Rational Therapy
also known as Rational Emotional Behavior Therapy represented by Albert Ellis, and Gestalt
Therapy represented by Fritz Perls. The sessions were given to the same women named Gloria that
presented a different problem each time. The goal of experiencing each type of therapysession was to
figure out what therapy style out of the three best helped Gloria.
The first therapy style Gloria was introduced to was Person Centered Therapy and the therapist was
Carl Rogers. Viewing Rogers at my own viewpoint, for the time period, he seems unbelievable. ...

The kind of therapy was very much less confrontational when compared to Gestalt Therapy as well as
a lot more talking. Ellis guided the conversation more and tended to ask questions that involve her
expressing herself less compared to the other two kinds of therapies. My first impression of this
kind of therapy was very negative, for some reason I believed that it was not quite beneficial for
Gloria, however, when I watched it a second time, I realized that my interpretation was different
and that this therapy and the advice from the therapist was actually benefit Gloria. The
connection between the two seemed to start off quick because Gloria was actually a fan of his
book but really seemed to firm was when Ellis brought up the mangled arm it really seemed like
they were on the same level. I believe that this session overall helped Gloria thinking more and
caused her to take more actions especially because of the homework assignment that Ellis said he
would give her if she was his client. What really shown me that the session was beneficial for
Gloria was when Ellis said assume the worse . When Ellis said this, Gloria pulled out a cigarette
which to me says that his words are getting to her and making her think because I have noticed that
she seems to smoke when she feels nervous or pressured and needs to calm down. Thus, this means
that she is trying to think through Ellis s
Schizophrenia In Kurt Vonnegut s Breakfast Of Champions
Many would argue that Kurt Vonnegut severed the Billy Pilgrim from within himself as a
therapeutic process to save his own sanity. (Broer 95) Billy Pilgrim resembles Vonnegut through
his experiences at war, as a prisoner and surviving the bombing of Dresden. Both men also survived
a plane crash and have an detachment to their emotions. (Klinkowitz, Vonnegut in Fact, 5) Vonnegut
used the creation of his character to cope and treat himself. By making a separate character, he has
created a person to project onto and embody his trauma. In one of Vonnegut s novels, Breakfast of
Champions (1973), he tells readers that schizophrenia has always fascinated him. He continues to
say that he did not know for certain if he had schizophrenia but that he was sick for awhile which
indicates Vonnegut... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
[In 1944], Billy first came unstuck while the Second World War was in progress (Vonnegut 18). This
would reason out schizophrenia according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
The manual states a traumatic event would not cause schizophrenia and common symptoms would
include hallucinations, aggression and hearing voices. Although Billy suffers from hallucinations, he
does not meet the threshold of being a schizophrenic. It could be further interpreted that Billy Pilgrim
suffers from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). According to the American Psychiatric
Association (1994), symptoms of PTSD include re experiencing trauma through memory,
hyperarousal, avoidance, and numbing general responsiveness. Billy shows these symptoms
throughout the novel: being spastic in time metaphorically indicates Billy s reliving the memories of
traumatic events, Billy avoids conversation about the war and his experiences with other characters,
and Billy shows no emotion suggesting numbness. (Vees Gulani
Advantages Of Reflexive Standardization Of The Information...
According to Ole Hanseth et al (2010), reflexive standardization is the process of supporting
efforts to bring about order and organization in a function, and instead of achieving positive results,
negative results are achieved. Reflexive standardization brings about negative results as a result of
failing to be planned adequately from the onset. For instance, take for example the Norwegian
hospital; the development of the Electronic Patient Record (EPR) was developed as a fragmented
record of databases. The records brought about challenges in the manner in which they were
accessed and as a result, there was need to redesign the system. Instead of setting aside a
development team to redesign the system based on thorough research, the hospital decided to
centralize the database and create several views for different system users to view these records.
This was deemed to be the reflexive standardization of the information system. It had both
advantages and disadvantages as discussed.
Necessity and Advantages
The proverbial elephant in the room was the scattering of records and the need to ... Show more

Most are not able to fully imitate a traditionally synchronized system such as an hospital. They thus
offer the necessary support to these systems instead of fully taking over their functions. In this case,
the systems present seemed to hinder the proper functioning of the hospital to its optimal potential.
It did not do much to increase service delivery thus came off as a hindrance to the success of the
hospital s functions. The system was also deemed by Ole Hanseth (2010) as a complex system. The
word complex is defined with respect to the ability of the new practitioners to understand the use of
the system. By being complex, the system fails in its quest to become a better solution as opposed to

The Opposition Of Judicial Activism
n response to the criticisms of those who are anti judicial activism, supporters of judicial activism
say such activism through judicial review is necessary because it allows the courts to step in and
fill gaps in the law where minorities are not protected because of political pressures and where
politicians are afraid to legislate . This raises the argument that judges and the judiciary play a
balanced activist legislative role in such a way that it protects the rights of minorities from legislation
or regulation imposed by the government. Within our democratic system, legislators will pay
attention to what the majority wants and they will pursue public policies, which favour the majority.
This leaves minority interests vulnerable to the legislations and regulations imposed by the
government. By playing an active role, the judiciary ensures that the rights of the minorities are
protected and that law does not contravene with the Charter of Human Rights and the Constitutionof
Canada. Through this kind of judicial activism, the courts strike a balance with the legislatures role.
This is not to say that the judiciary takes on the role of policymaking and the legislature, but rather
that both institutions embrace what is referred to as a dialogue where there is a balance between
judicial decision making and legislative executive decision making . However, according to
MacKay, it is legitimate for the courts to engage in a form of judicial policy making so long as they
do
1960s Counterculture
The 1960s meant a transition into adulthood for the baby boomers of the 1940s. Most Americans
who lived in postwar America lived a prosperous life with a steady and wealthy income reaching
middle class status. The parents of baby boomers tried to lay the foundation for their children with a
hard work ethic, morality, and patriotism. But the baby boomers sought their own destiny by defying
their parents wishes. Because the baby boomers represented a large number of the American
population, most of them found groups that shared similar interests. A variety of youth movements
existed during the 1960s, but two notable groups were the Free Speech Movement or FSM and the
hippies of the counterculture movement. Both groups shared differences and... Show more content on

At times, they exhibited a passive rebellious attitude evident during the Love Pageant Rally. The
Rally was an organized alternative method for expressing disappointment with a new law which
illegalize LSD. The men who produced the pageant...decided that a celebration on that day would
help avert a possible protest demonstration against the law. They felt a protest would be a needless
continuation of old forms in which the police always held the physical advantage (Tomlinson 297).
Instead, the counterculture movement distrusted the police and politics and chose a lifestyle filled
with love and peace. This idea often mixed with sexual promiscuity and drug experimentation. Their
lifestyle also resulted in many hippies owning few possessions and moving around. I have no money,
no possessions...we take care of each other (Tomlinson 300). Similar to FSM and other youth
movements, music played an influential role for those involved in the counterculture, and today,
Woodstock remains synonymous with
Advantages And Disadvantages Of A Single Leaf Swing Door...
Door plays an important area for the building as it allow access and egress from buildings and
between rooms, compartments and corridors. The two examples can be found in block 34 which is
the single hung single leaf swing door and the automatic sliding door at the library, refer to figure
7.1 and 7.2 of the picture in appendices respectively.
The single hung single leaf swing door that is located at block 34 of Ngee Ann Polytechnic are
supported on hinges as side hung and on track as folding doors. The single hung single leaf swing
door is the most commonly used between rooms and corridors. The advantages of having a single
swing door is that they are very strong and stable, making it easier for maintenance. In addition
they have weather proof qualities which allows it to possess an anti rust quality. However, the
short back of having a single hung single leaf swing wall are it is inflexible as compared to a
double swing door, as it can only be open from one way. It also cause inconvenient to the users as
they have to open the door manually. Although it is weather resistance, they are prone to water stain
due to its material used. Furthermore, they took up larger amount of space as compared to other
door options.

Ancient Egypt Essay
Ancient Egypt is a fascinating ancient civilization. The Egyptian culture was heavily polytheistic
with a complex view of the afterlife, which was evident in their architecture and communication.
Even today as ancient Egypt melts together with modern Egypt. The pull of their ancient cities is
still seen in Cairo and Alexandia.
The highly developed belief of polytheism in the Egyptian culture was made up of many gods. This
belief is the base to the Egyptian culture and life. In the Egyptian polytheistic culture the gods took
on form and characteristics of objects found in nature. The Egyptian god Ra is considered the father
of gods and was the most important and worshiped god. When the Egyptians think of the figure that

During the fourth dynasty pharaohs were known as the sons of Ra . Ra was a primary god in the
fifth dynasty, which is when he became associated with the king and then the pharaoh. Ra became
more and more popular during the new kingdom, which resulted in a sort of monotheism.
The Eye of Ra is an Egyptian symbol for protection and the divine royal power. This symbol even
appears on the United Sates dollar bill. The eye within the pyramid represents Ra awaiting
rebirth. Even though the Eye of Ra is within the pyramid his soul remains alive and watchful as
the open eye indicates. Osiris is the Egyptian god of the underworld. Osiris is one of five children
born to Geb and Nut; the god of earth and the goddess of the skies. He was also the great grandson
of Ra. All of Osiris s siblings played an important role in his story: Seth, his brother and his two
sisters Isis and Nepthys. Osiris inherited the throne of Egypt because he was the first born son if Geb
and Nut.
Though Osiris and Isis were brother and sister they were married and were not destined to be
happy. Osiris s other sister, Nephthys, at one point takes on the appearance of Isis and presented
herself as Isis. Osiris, not knowing the difference, was seduced by Nephthy; she had Anubis. Seth
developed a jealousy toward Osiris either because Osiris had inherited the throne or because he had
gotten Nephthy, Seth s wife, pregnant. Seth sought to kill Osiris by luring Osiris into a coffin and
