Analysis Of The Book Carver Essay
Every story you read has an author behind it now how you interpret that s up to you, but some
authors have a completely different interpretation of their writing. Some authors hide deep meaning
behind their writings that can be difficult to catch. Authors will use symbolism to tell a different
story. A period of their life could affect the way they write and you can see that as a reader if you
pick apart the story. Raymond Carveris a great example on how a period in his life affected his
writing. Carver was going down a dark path which readers can see the affects of this period in his
life in his writing style. It took Carver some time to find his sense of hope again, and when he did
so did his writing. Carver was known to be a great writer even according to Stephen King, Carver
was considered to be one of the most influential writing in the 20th century (King). Also, know for
being one of the most important contributors to literature. In his short stories Carver chronicled
the everyday lives and problems of the working poor in the Pacific Northwest. His blue collar
characters are crushed by broken marriages, financial problems, and failed careers. This short
stories mirrored Carver s own life. Carver s stripped down, minimalist prose style is remarkable for
its honesty and power. He is credited with helping revitalize the genre of the English language short
storyin the late 20th century.Carver dealt with a serious case of alcoholism you can see the change

Summary of Jfk s Profiles in Courage
John F. Kennedy s Profiles in Courage discusses the presence of moral fiber, or courage, in the
careers of 8 different Senators. Throughout the book, Kennedy tells accounts of how a select few
Senators showed courage and displayed moral fiber by standing their ground on certain issues when
their party and constituents were in great opposition to them. In Profiles of Courage, Kennedy
dedicates one chapter to each Senator and his tale of courage. The following Senators were used:
John Quincy Adams, Daniel Webster, Thomas Hart Benton, Sam Houston, Edmund G. Ross, Lucius
Lamar, George Norris, and Robert A. Taft. John Quincy Adams became a Senator as a
Massachusetts Federalist in 1803, but soon broke away from his party. When the time came to...

Sam Houston, a Senator from Texas, first displayed courage when he refused to support the
Kansas Nebraska Act of 1854. Houston believes the passing of this act would further divide the
Union by fueling the controversy over slavery. He was the only Southern Democrat to vote
against the Kansas Nebraska Act. His opposition to this Act was considered very Anti Southern
and made him very unpopular. His opposition of this Act was the downfall in his run for Texas
governor and his dismissal from Texas legislature in 1857. Two years later, he was asked to run
for governor again and here is when Houston s second act of courage is displayed. When he was
elected, Houston s term was a great setback to pro slavery extremists. In response to this, the
Texas legislature voted to secede from the Union. Houston refused to take the oath of allegiance to
the Confederacy and was ousted from his governing position. His moral fiber and determination, in
the end, led to his downfall in politics. His standing up for what he believed in caused the end of
his political career. Edmond Ross, a Kansas Republican, displayed courage when he cast the
deciding vote in the Johnson Impeachment Proceedings and said that he wanted to see Johnson
treated fairly. The other members of the Republican Party just wanted Johnson out of office and
therefore, tried to convince the rest of Congress to find Johnson guilty. Ross bravery in going against
the grain and standing up for
Animal Experimentation Successes And Clinical Research...
An examination of the conditions endured by research animals beforehand can also be attributed to a
source of conclusion inaccuracy between animal experimentation successes and clinical research
failures. Stress, commonly experienced by animal subjects in a lab setting, is a major factor known
for contaminating the accuracy and reliability of biomedical researchresults. Stress causes a chain
reaction of heightened readings, such as increased heart rates, pulses, muscular actions, and
hormonal balances. Executing experiments on a subject with misrepresentative vital signs can
greatly skew the results and interpretations drawn from a study. Stress can be experienced in a
variety of manners. Mice, for example, experience a reactive condition known as sympathy pains
when in a laboratory setting. In addition to the individual response taken at the foreign sights,
sounds, and smells, mice are affected by the stress level and anxiety experienced by other mice
surrounding them. Like humans, mice can feel sympathy towards one another and react accordingly.
Performing experiments on animals that suffer from an abnormal amount of stress will skew
evidence collected, and make it difficult for scientists to reach conclusions about predicted similar
human responses. In reference to the aforesaid example of animal research being done to advance
cancer exploration, alternative options are becoming more available. The benefits of using non
animal testingare immense: lack of suffering,
Werner By Jo Ann Beard Analysis
When disaster strikes, two responses exist: lose hope, or find an inner strength to rise above.
Werner is an essay where the author, Jo Ann Beard, presents the idea of rediscovering yourself,
rebuilding a life after loss, and rising above adversity. Werner, Beard s main character, finds that
the only way to truly move on after a tragedy is to take a leap into what is unfamiliar. After a fire
burns down everything Werner has, he is forced to grow and become a new man, leaving his old
life behind. Throughout the essay, Beard illustrates a man who faces challenges to his sense of self,
and who sequentially must change and become someone new to find who he is again. Beard s use
of the third person, candid diction, and conflict resolution compose an elaborate work that focuses
on the concept of becoming a new and better person after a traumatic event. Though Beard is
retelling Werner s story, she does not do so through the first person. It is told through the eyes of a
narrator, who knows more about the situation than Werner himself, at the time. For example, the
narrator knows the cause of the fire and the fact that Werner will never be the same, old Werner
(Werner 21). This extra knowledge engages the reader more with the story. On the other hand, even
though the narrator knows more contextual details, they still provide insight into what Werner is
feeling, as he is coping with the reality of being physically pushed forward into something new and
unfamiliar (Werner 13).
Examples Of Concrete Thinking
3.1.4.Concrete Concrete Thinking is the opposite of abstract thinking. This is a literal thinking that
will focus on the physical world. Individuals engaged in Concrete Thinking are focusing on facts in
the here and now, the physical objects and the literal definitions. Concrete Thinking is a literal
thinking that will focus on the physical world. In the development of an individual s cognitive
abilities, most individuals will start with concrete thinking. As the individual age, they will develop
different levels for abstract thinking. Most people therefore have the ability to think concrete and
abstractly. Some circumstances will make the concrete thinking becomes absent. Certain mental
disorders will be characterised by the individual s inability to demonstrate... Show more content on

This will then narrow the range that is under consideration until only the conclusions is left.
3.1.9.Divergent Divergent Thinking is a though process that will be used to generate creative
ideas by exploring many possible solutions. Unlike convergent thinking, this will typically occur
in a spontaneous, free flowing, non linear manner. Divergent Thinking is a though process that
will be used to generate creative ideas by exploring many possible solutions. This is done in such
a way that it will generate many ideas in an emergent cognitive fashion. This will allow for many
possible solutions to be explored in a short amount to time and will draw up unexpected
connections. After the process of divergent thinking has been completed, the ideas and information
will be organised and structured using convergent thinking to make decisions. 3.1.10.Strategic
Strategic Thinking can be defined as a mental or thinking process that will be applied by an
individual in the context of achieving success in an endeavour. This is a cognitive process, meaning
it is a process of
The Theories Of Law That Apply Strict Product Liability...
In this court case there are two theories of Law that Apply, Strict product liability and negligence.
These theories were originally applied under Delaware law in the case, Stark ex re. Jacobsen V.
Ford Motor Co. Thus raising the inquiry of how these theories may have varied had the case s
venue been located in Indiana. According to the West s Indiana Law Encyclopedia, In Strict
Liability actions, the plaintiff must prove that (1) the product was defective and unreasonably
dangerous, (2) the defective condition existed at the time the product left the defendant s control,
and (3) the defective condition was the proximate cause of the plaintiff s injuries 27 Ind. Law
Encyc. Generally ss 10 (2002). All three of these conditions must be met in order for strict liability
to be present. The first condition the product must be defective and unreasonably dangerous entails
that the product in some manner does not operate as it was intended and due to the defect the
product poses a threat to the well being of whomever uses it. The requirement that the defective
condition existed at the time of the purchase is important because it requires the product to have
been defective when bought, not due to improper use by the purchaser. Finally, for strict liability to
exist the defective condition must have caused the plaintiff to suffer an injury. West s Indiana Law
encyclopedia states that, A product may be defective within the meaning of the product liability act

The Effects Of Captive Orcas On The Whales

Effects Of Captive Orcas
The effect on orca whales being held in captivity is not the greatest, and the history between
humans and the whales that are held in captivity is also not very good. It is a subject that many
scientists are working together to learn about. Even though the orcas help to educate kids by doing
live shows and by helping the kids understand that they need to save the orca whales that are
endangered, orcas should not be held in captivity because many accidents have happened between
humans and the captive orcas and it is not good for their health. Another name for the orca whales is
the scientific name, orcinus orca , or the name that you probably hear most often ... Show more

Occasionally the whales will fight with each other due to stress, but since they are in such a
small enclosure they have nowhere to go to get away from each other like they would in the
wild. Many orcas that are held in captivity have problems with their teeth and they have to have
their teeth drilled. All captive adult male orcas have collapsed dorsal fins, likely because they have
no space in which to swim freely and are fed an unnatural diet of thawed dead fish (8 Reasons).
Some killer whales also develop infections and the whales are not healthy because they are not fed a
healthy diet like they would eat in the ocean.
Captive orcinus orcas live in a relatively small space compared to their natural habitat. An orca
would have to swim back and forth in it s tank many times each day to equal the amount of miles
it would swim in the ocean daily. Captivity is, in essence, poor habitat for orcas, causing early
death (Captivity). Due to all the problems with killer whales being held in captivity, the whales
experience a much shorter lifespan in captivity compared to their lifespan in the wild. Also all
whales that have been held in captivity cannot be released back into their natural habitat because
they may not be able to find their pod and they will not have the skills needed to survive.
Although there are many problems, there are also many solutions to save the killer whales that
1. How Does RNA Differ From DNA
1) How does RNA differ from DNA? According to the video, RNA is made of nucleotide building
block, but is a single stranded. DNA often exists as a double stranded molecule made of four
building blocks called nucleotides. RNA contains Uracil as DNA contains Thymine. DNA is most
often used to store genetic information, while RNAserves as a host of functions.

2) Name and discuss at least three things does RNA do in the cell, based on what you learned in the
video and the tutorials.
Based on what I ve learned in the video and the tutorials. RNA plays three major roles in the cell as
DNA photocopy (mRNA) as a coupler between the genetic code and the protein building blocks
(tRNA), and as a structural component of ribosomes (rRNA). RNA is much ... Show more content on

There is much scientific debate about whether viruses are alive. Like living creatures, they carry
genes and evolve. They are unable to reproduce on their own and must infect living cells and
hijack cellular machinery such as ribosomes to copy themselves. Each virus is like a little tank
that can blast a hole in the outer cell wall and send its forces in. These intruders change the
blueprints in the factory s headquarters so the factory starts producing more viral tanks. It doesn t
stop until it builds so many tanks that the cell bursts right open. Most viruses are little more than
genetic information DNA or RNA inside a protein shell. They bind to a cell and inject their genetic
code inside
9) How does RNA interference help scientists study genes?
Scientists can use the same basic mechanism of RNA interference to turn off one gene at a time and
study the effect on the cell and the organism. For example, turning off one gene may drain all the
pigment out of a purple flower. Another might prevent a plant from producing a toxic chemical,
making it safe to eat. Scientists have not yet determined whether human cells naturally fight viruses
with RNAi, but it is possible that one day we will be able to use RNAi to deactivate cancer causing
genes and genetic disorders.
10) In a paragraph, reflect on what you thought of the NOVA RNA Lab. You
The Watchman As A Hero In Alan Moore s Watchmen
A cornerstone work in the world of graphic novels, Alan Moore s Watchmen provides a rich plot
for readers while pushing them to question the world in which they live. One such question
suggested by the text is what it means to be a hero or a good guy , and to what extent bad acts are
redeemable. Through the Comedian, Moore provides a characterwho skirts the line between good
and evil in that he uses aggressive methods for achieving his goals, but is still considered a hero.
Furthermore, the Comedian, also known as Edward Blake, though not the only overly violent hero,
is most always cast in a negative light, with few redeeming qualities, suggesting that the small good
he does is not enough to outweigh the bad.
The identity of the Comedian is slowly revealed through the course of the book, with several key
scenes demonstrating his twisted worldview. One of the first sources of characterization is his
attempted rape of Silk Spectre. At that point in time, no other source of identity has been given, so
for the duration of the novel, the reader must absorb all new information knowing the evil he is
capable of, and has committed. In providing a negative first impression of the Comedian, Moore
forces readers to subconsciously interpret any new information presented about him in a dark light,
and in doing so, suggests that redemption is not possible for Blake. In addition, the juxtaposition of
Blake as a hero who first appears as a rapist forces the reader to take into question
Ghettos In Germany
Jewish councils were appointed to dictate life in the ghettos. The ghetto police enforced the word
of the councils and the Nazis. If someone disobeyed, it wasn t an unusual punishment to get shot.
Jews whose turn it was to be killed were killed either by being shot or being put in a gas van .
These tactics were soon abandoned as they got into the killer s heads. The new solution was camps.
Before Jews were transported to any type of camp, they were taken to transit camps. The purpose
of a transit camp is to concentrate prisoners until they were ready to be taken to a camp. Prisoners
would have to wait in the camp until transport came to take them away. Transport typically was
cattle wagons or boxcars. The Nazis set up a number of transit camps in occupied lands. After being
rounded up, Jews were imprisoned in transit camps before being deported to a concentration camp,
labour camp or one of the six Nazi extermination camps in Poland Prisoners would leave their
belongings ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Combined with the use of various forms of propaganda, Hitler and the Nazis were able to
convince the Germans to believe in their message. The Germans then began to hate and
discriminate against the Jews. This justified the German s plans towards a Final Solution in killing
the Jews. Over time, the Germans were able to carry out this plan. The Jews were then
concentrated, put into labor, and gassed. Those who were lucky were liberated by Allied soldiers
and were able to return home safely, where they were still shunned for some time. In this manner,
Hitler and the Nazis were able to justify the extermination of millions of Jews. The Holocaust
illustrates the consequences of prejudice, racism and stereotyping on a society. It forces us to
examine the responsibilities of citizenship and confront the powerful ramifications of indifference
and inaction. Tim
The Social Structure Of The West
8th century and particular causes that explain why it was by far the most violent and the most
universally significant of these revolutions. The first of the general causes was the social
structure of the West. The feudal regime had been weakened step by step and had already
disappeared in parts of Europe. The increasingly numerous and prosperous elite of wealthy
commoners merchants, manufacturers, and professionals, often called the bourgeoisie aspired to
political power in those countries where it did not already possess it. The peasants, many of
whom owned land, had attained an improved standard of living and education and wanted to get
rid of the last vestiges of feudalism so as to acquire the full rights of landowners and to be free to
increase their holdings. Furthermore, from about 1730, higher standards of living had reduced the
mortality rate among adults considerably. This, together with other factors, had led to an increase in
the population of Europe unprecedented for several centuries: it doubled between 1715 and 1800.
For France, which with 26 million inhabitants in 1789 was the most populated country of Europe,
the problem was most acute. Voltaire [Credit: Stock Montage/Hulton Archve/Getty Images]A larger
population created a greater demand for food and consumer goods. The discovery of new gold
mines in Brazil had led to a general rise in prices throughout the West from about 1730, indicating a
prosperous economic situation. From about 1770, this trend
