The Age Of Innocence Analysis
The Age of Innocence is a story with the happiest of endings. Newland Archer s struggle between
passion and practicality, between Countess Ellen Olenska and May Welland, comes to an epic
conclusion, confronting the effects of duty, marriage, promises, priorities, society, and lust.

Newland and May are engaged when Newland first meets Ellen, May s cousin, who stirs up their
New York society with her dramatic clothing and loose lifestyle. May is considerably plain when
compared to her cousin, and as time passes, Newland starts to realize that himself. The intellectual
conversations exchanged between him and the countess pale in comparison to the polite exchanges
he receives with May. The more time Newland spends with Ellen, however, the more he realizes that
he is in love with her. He quickly goes to his fiancée after this discovery, who was vacationing in
Florida with her parents at the time, and urges that the wedding be moved up, for he knows that if
he waits too long, he surely will bend to the will of Ellen and not go through with his engagement.
He recognizes that it is his duty to society to be with May and he does all that he can to make sure
that happens, even if he has to sacrifice what his heart truly desires, to be with Ellen.

The wedding gets moved up, they get married, and Ellen leaves New York. Newland and May go
on to have kids and live the married life they originally planned to. When May dies of pneumonia
several years later, their now grown and
Process Selection Process Essay
When creating a business model there are ample decisions and choices to make and consider.
Those decisions directly correlate to how successful the business can become as well as the
effectiveness of the company s growth. Bad business models can destroy a company and damage
its reputation. As consumers, we see this frequently with the weekly closings. Some as brutal as
the destruction of Enron, and other company breakdowns as simple as the monthly closings of
JCPenney s which has led to 2,250 layoffs. So consequently, you can observe and benefit from the
use of efficient business plans or view and examine the damage and destruction done by inefficient
business plans. Through thorough research we ll examine two methods that can help a company
achieve a proficient business plan. The use of process selection, and the choices made when
implementing your facility layout can directly contribute to the success rate of your business. To
begin with the first topic for discussion we first must properly define process selection. Process
selection refers to the strategic decisions of selecting the kind of production process to have in a
manufacturing plant (Ch. 6 Process Selection and Facility Layout). This method refers to the ways
services and goods are made and delivered therefore, influencing multiple aspects of a corporation,
including their capacity planning and layout of their facilities. Process selection is used primarily
when planning the distribution of new products or

There are various professionals involved in the construction industry such as the design team, the
builders and others. Quantity Surveyor is one of the professionals that contribute in the construction
project. Based on Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) documentation (2014), Quantity
Surveying is a client led profession where the Quantity Surveyors act on what client needs and they
must use own skill development depending on the owners requirements.

The roles of the Quantity Surveyor either for the clients or the contractors will be discussed on the
next sub topic. Generally, Quantity Surveyor is the professional expert in ensuring the budget or
financial management or the needs of the client to be achieved based on what they planned in the
early stage until the completion of the project. The Figure 2.1 below shows the typical construction
model of organisation in the project. The profession of quantity surveying cannot be avoided to be
involved with other professions such as architect and engineers. In order to meet the expectations, the
Quantity Surveyors need to use the various knowledges and skills in doing their
Lenin Followed Marxism, Stalin Did Not Essay
Marxism was defined by a man named Karl Marx and his associate Fredrich Engels. Basically,
Marxism is defined as a conflict theory, as Marx said that society is separated by a conflict between
the rich and the poor. Today, when one thinks about Marx s philosophy, he is often tied as an enemy
to Capitalism due to his ties to Communism. Although he did layout the foundry to Communism as
we know it, he never saw it to be how it is today. He saw it as a way for social egalitarianism;
Equality for the poor and rich (the Proletariat and Bourgeoisie); a classless society. He wanted to

owned by everyone. A concept he called Collective... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Replacing Nuclear Power Argumentative Analysis
Besides the effect nuclear accidents have had on the physical ground and politically, it also has
created fear in the public. In research done by Nick Pidgeon, he said Between 1975 and 1990,
social scientists and psychologists developed psychometric surveys to study public perceptions of
nuclear power and its risks; the respondents identified the power source as dreaded meaning it was
not only viewed as a catastrophic risk unknown to the public and to scientists, but it was also
believed to be a technology that offered relatively few perceived benefits (Pidgeon 3).
This reinforces that fact that people usually associate the term nuclear with all the major accidents
that have happened and also probably nuclear weapons. There are ... Show more content on

Nuclear fusion differs from fission in that fusion is when two atoms are smashed together, and
fission is when atoms are split in half. Conventional nuclear reactors have always been fission and
this is one of the first fusion reactors. Nuclear fusion has the potential to produce nearly unlimited
supplies of clean, safe, carbon free energy. Fusion is the same process that powers the sun, and it
can be realized in reactors that simulate the conditions of ultra hot miniature stars of plasma
superheated gas that are contained within a magnetic field ( New Record for Fusion ). This means
that there could be a very good alternative for conventional nuclear power. Be that as it may, this
technology is far from becoming a needed replacement for nuclear energy. This technology will
benefit others years down the line, but for right now, it will stay in its experimental
Brainwashing In How Stuffs Work
There are many individuals who view brainwashing as a disease that spreads like wildfire. But what
exactly is brainwashing and how does it work? According to Merriam Webster Dictionary,
brainwashing is defined as a forcible indoctrination to induce someone to give up basic political,
social, religious beliefs and attitudes and to accept contrasting regimented ideas. According to
journalist Julia Layton, from How Stuff Works, In the brainwashing process, the agent
systematically breaks down the target s identity to the point that it doesn t work anymore. The agent
then replaces it with another set of behaviors, attitudes and beliefs that work in the target s current
environment. But it s not like brainwashing is a brand new invention that... Show more content on

After watching the film, I learned that there are certain things people use to brainwash an
individual. I also learned that you should stand up and fight for what you truly believe in. Learning
how to stand up to someone gives you strength and makes you feel like no one can mess with you.
But when you live in a country like Saudi Arabia, Iraq, or even Syria, it s not that easy. There are
consequences that follow when you finally begin to see the truth behind something bad. There
are some individuals who say that it s easy to not let someone brainwash or tell you what to do,
all you have to do is say no. But see, it s not that simple. Those individuals don t have to go
through what the individuals in countries like Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Syria have to go through
when it comes to just saying no. If someone from one of those countries were to say no to their
brainwasher, they would get punished, tortured or even killed. So it s not really a win win. But
what s even more alarming, is that children are the ones who are also getting brainwashed, just
like in the film. And it doesn t matter if you re a child or not, if you don t obey or fall in, there s a
certainty you may get killed. It is important that individuals know brainwashing is serious and that
it s not that easy to turn away from. It s like a quote that Caroline Kennedy once said that I believe
fits well into what I learned, It is not easy to stand up
Selective Breeding Vs. Natural Selection
Selective breeding has been used for many years to achieve the expression of desired traits in
animals and plants. Similar to natural selection, humans have developed artificial selection where
humans select the most desirable traits instead of the environment, this is what s known as selective
breeding. But in fact selective breeding does not select for the fittest phenotype like in natural
selectionit actually selects for the most desirable phenotypes which may cause harm to the individual.
Natural selection selects against harmful alleles as they are disadvantageous to the individual and
possibly restricts its ability to survive till the age of sexual reproduction thus not being able to pass
on this harmful gene, whereas selective breeding selects for harmful alleles if seen desirable.
Selective breeding involves breeding organisms based on their phenotypes so that the desired traits
are passed onto successive generations, these desired alleles then increase (in frequency) in the gene
pool. This has a large commercial benefit as animal and crop products now contain higher quality
meat, quantity of milk, quality of wool, larger fruits etc.
The goal of selective breeding in animals is to either produce a pure breed (a breed that will
consistently produce offspring with the desired traits or to simply improve the quality of the desired
trait/phenotype (homozygous). This is achieved by inbreeding (where two closely related
individuals mate and produce offspring)

Gerald Graff Education
Students and Professors: Working Together for a Better Education
Gerald Graff s desire as an author and a professor at University of Illinois, is For American students
to do better all of them, not just twenty percent because he believes that education is not only for the
elite few (3). His Clueless in Academe How Schooling Obscures the Life of the Mind strongly
emphasizes that the faculty have the tools to succeed, yet does not give these tools to the students.
Graff has first hand experience dealing with educational system and troubled students, so he explain
his observations and how can education be improved. Throughout his work, Graff compels the
reader to accept that professors must initiate and reach out to the students. He implies ... Show more

Graff underestimates the students ability of understanding and reaching out for help. Student can
ask question during TA s or professor s office hour to ensure they understand the material. As an
illustration, John Merrow s Declining by Degree: Higher Education at Risk shows a young student,
Brittany Schmidt, being an assertive and independent adult. She initially has an identity crisis with
the lectures having hundred fifty people in it and the class wasn t challenging her enough.
Nevertheless, Schmidt turn to Dr. Robert Brown whom she asked questions and spent time with.
She found guidances and encouragement from Dr. Brown which resulted in Schmidt success and
choice of career, Planetary Sciences. I believe communication is the key for education and success,
between students and professors. Most colleges provide tutoring for students, so they can get
additional help from the resources they have at their disposal. Many student like Brittany Schmidt
can take initiative to look at their syllabus and decide whether reading or skimming ahead of
lectures, so they can at least have an idea what the lesson will be about. It starts with students taking
initiative because at the end of the day it s their
In Memoriam Rudy Giuliani
American democracy is much stronger than vicious, cowardly, terrorism. In my opinion, this
powerful statement by Rudy Giuliani, the previous New York City Mayor during 9/11, ultimately
sums up and implies the importance of commemorating the anniversary of September 11th. This
quote is not only consoling but serves as a reminder to all Americans that our nation, when unified,
is nearly imperishable. Throughout the film In Memoriam, there are several tragic and devastating
images of the fateful day. Among these include both World Trade Centers being stricken, people
trapped or jumping out of the windows, Police and Firemen frantically rushing to help, and the
disastrous collapse of both towers. There is no doubt that at a moment like this,... Show more content

In my opinion, the film truly captures the massive terror and chaos that occurred that September
morning. In terms of describing the events, the film successfully addresses not only what
occurred outside the Twin Towers, but also what was happening on the inside such as the phone
calls to family members and friends. It was mentioned that older people in the buildings gave
their chance down the elevator to those that were younger. There are several scenes that show
and tell the different stories of those that were trapped. On the outside one can see the distress
among the New Yorkers and the distraught faces of the pedestrians that were fixated on the near
collapsing buildings. The scenes of debris falling, office papers flying everywhere, and the clouds
of dust rolling through the streets is what made most people compare it what Hell might be like.
The film accurately covered every aspect and event of 9/11 from the first airstrike at 8:46 am to the
very funerals of those whose lives were taken. The lack of censorship throughout the film is what I
feel most definitely helps to capture the brutality that was inflicted towards the United States that
day. What I felt when watching these events was utter helplessness, yet patriotism when seeing the
several Americans working together to help one
Yellow Sun
Throughout Half of a Yellow Sun, the narrator acts as the protagonist. The story begins with the
country of Biafra announcing their secession from Nigeria. Soon after, a civil war begins and
Nigerian soldiers advance on the narrator s home and force her family to evacuate. The plot is
mainly focused around the narrator adjusting to the unfamiliar feeling of being a refugee. As the
story goes on, the narrator s personality and her interactions with those around her go through some
changes. Due to the war between Biafraand Nigeria, the narrator s hopeful outlook for her future
gradually disintegrates and leaves her as the despondent shell of the girl she once was.

soldiers push her family out of their home, the narrator still believes that her country will win due
to what she hears from her radio. She even hopes that the war might last a bit longer because she
savors the sharp feeling of desperation. When her brother dies however, the war suddenly becomes
real. Her brother s death marks her decline into hopelessness. The lost war represents her lost battle
against her creeping hopelessness. The narrator begins the story as a girl who is proud of her new

Essay on My Philosophy of Teaching
Philosophy of Education

Before a person goes into the education field, most have to do a lot of thinking to make sure that
what they are beginning is something that they will truly enjoy doing. Teachers do not go into their
profession for fame and fortune. They are there to educate children for a lifetime of learning.

Teaching is not something that I have had to think about. Teaching is something I have felt drawn to
ever since I was three or four years old playing school with my cousins. I have known that I wanted
to teach all of my life. Naturally I went through the I want to be a doctor, a firefighter, an astronaut, a
lawyer phase, but teaching is the only thing that I have ever really felt like I would enjoy. Spending

Once this is done then the school year can begin. The second role of the teacher comes from the
Behaviorist Philosophy, the controller of behavior. The teacher has to set rules that his/her students
are able to understand. Along with the rules the teacher needs to have consequences that the students
will have to pay if these rules are broken. A teacher must be consistent and treat all of his/her students
the same no matter what he/she know about the student or the student s past tendencies. The
consequences must be fair and suit the misbehavior. Also, like the Existentialists, I feel that the
teacher has to be a mediator. If the teacher notices that nay of his/her students are having problems
with anyone else, the teacher needs to step in and get the students to try to work their problems out
in a reasonable way. Being with the Progressivists, I feel that the teacher should be a guide for his
/her students and a director of learning. The teacher must guide his/her students to realize that they
have to make their own decisions. The children must realize that they do not have to do or say
anything unless they want to. The teacher has to be the one to show this to the students, otherwise
they may never be told this. Finally, as the director of learning the teacher has to encourage his/her
students that learning is fun. If the children do not understand something, the teacher is the one who
has to make the time to explain it better to the students. The
My First Day Of High School
You need to surround yourself with people who care about you. Who challenge you to grow. Who
make you happy and appreciate all that you have to offer. The message rang in my head as my
mother offered me this advice, in attempt to quell my fear of not fitting in the night before my first
day of high school. I was often scared to be myself. Being a persistent Asian with nothing but
frequent late nights studying intensely to keep up, young male dancer, and closeted gay teenager
were all facets of my identity that did not sit well in the minds of middle school bullies. However,
my high schoolexperiences brought me to realize that by integrating myself in a community of
passionate individuals, I thrived immensely and found myself growing every day. Today, I no longer
fear being unapologetically Marcus. With a profound clarity, I envision myself continuing my
journey of self improvement by studying at Carnegie Mellon as a design major.
I found my niche in design because the field allows me to combine my love for the arts and
functional aesthetics with my dream of creating an impact on the world. Already, I observed the
immediate social impacts of thoughtful communication design as editor in chief for our school s
yearbook publication. I learned design extends beyond aesthetics as its primary significance is
functionality, which my staff accomplished by telling powerful stories through an understanding of
visual hierarchy and efforts to ensure thorough coverage. A full year s
